What year/decade did it become mandatory for male heartthrobs to have a sculpted look? I remember people like Tom Cruise and Luke Perry never had abs when they were teen idols.

Since 15th/16th Century with statues such as David by Michelangelo.

Don't forget Ancient Greece where they built the abs and pecs right into the armour.
