Subject: More transformational: 1990s vs 2000s?

Written By: bchris02 on 02/14/18 at 12:54 am

When you compare where we were as a society in 1990 to where we were in 2000 and again in 2010, I don't think any two decades in recent history were more trans-formative than the '90s and '00s.  Which decade do you think was more transformative and why?

I would say the 1990s myself being that we started the decade still in the analog (literal) Cold War era and ended it with the rise of the Internet.

The 2000s we more or less an expansion of innovations that became widespread in the '90s, both technologically and globally, and for non-developed nations, that was the more important decade for them. That decade also originated the "on demand" culture. But I'll have to say the 1990s, especially the second half of the decade since that was when the Internet and mobile communications had its fastest rate of growth, and all of a sudden, the reality of a global interconnected society, very weakly evident in 1990, was certainly here to stay. The 2000s on the technology front which more-or-less perfected '90s trends (Twitter instead of AIM, Wikipedia instead of Britannica or Encarta online, faster bandwidth enabling instant video anywhere), and it was a rather weak decade for the arts, from music to literature to movies. The 1980s is probably right up there as well since many people first used their primitive version of the Internet and in addition to cellphones first going on sale, you had VCRs allowing you to watch anything at anytime along with the fall of communism starting in the later part of that decade, along with the beginning of globalization as we know it along with the birth of the 24-hr. news cycle with CNN, along with many TV stations becoming around-the-clock, not to mention the boom in video games, cable TV and satellite.

Definitely, the 90's IMO.

You could wear the same thing that you wore in the year 2000 in 2009 and get away with it.

You can't really do that with 1990 and 1999.

You can't wear clothes from 1990 in 1999 at all.
