Subject: What year do you consider the last Gen Z year?

Written By: ofkx on 11/28/17 at 12:28 pm

I personally think it ends somewhere in the early 10’s. I was born in 2002, and I doubt I will be able to relate to my niece, who will be born a couple of months from now :-\\. What do you think?

I would probably say 2009 or 2010 is the last Gen Z birth year.
When I think of 2010's babies, I just think of Generation Alpha

Personally, I don't think Gen Z should last any longer than 2012. Most definitions of Gen Z I've seen either ended it at 2009, 2010, or 2012. But it's still too early to determine the ending birth year for Gen Z. I think both 2009 and 2010 are good cutoffs so far.

2009 is probably the last year I'd put for Gen Z if you simply go by the basic Gen Z definition that starts in around 1995.

However, I would also say that 2017 may be the last Gen Z year as well, because that is when the last of the 90's borns graduate high school. Also, there was this thing about the Chinese Zodiac, where certain generations coincide with each other.

Anywhere between 2009 and 2017 can mark the end of Gen Z.

The big "Z to Alpha" cusp is probably going to be 2013-2019.

We won't know until they're older.

I think it would be either 2016 or 2017 since early zers born between 2000 and 2003 won't have anything in common with those born in 2018 on and 2018 is the year that those born in the year 2000 begin coming of age.

2012 because they're the last to remember some pre-2016 things vaguely. 2016 was a world-shaking year.

Core Z people like my little sisters born 2005 were still in their core childhood though (they were 10 for most of 2016). Do you think 2017 can be a 'late Z'  year, like maybe what 1999 was to kid millennials? There were fidget spinners and the Switch this year. It was quite changeful. :D (Interesting too that 1999 and 2017 are 18 years apart.)

2017 kind of reminds me of 2013 in a way. I can’t quite put my finger on it.

2016 was the worst year for me and lots of other things. Even 2014 was better

Even people born in 2006 won't relate with them at all.

0-2 years: Not really a difference
3-5 years: Somewhat of a difference
6-8 years: Moderate differences
9-11 years: A lot of differences (sub-generation gap)
12+ years: Generation Gap

2014 wasn't really a good year either. You had the the Crimean Crisis, Elliot Rodger's rampage, Gamergate, the Ferguson riots, and the rise of SJW and Alt-right movements (yes, alt right stuff was around in 2014 as well).

I’m talking about personally.

2010 at the very earliest, 2017 at the very latest.

I don't understand why you guys say 2017 is the last because people born in 2000 will be turning 18 next year, yet the majority of you still consider them millennials? ???

Sure. I mean, some consider remembering 9/11 the litmus test for Millennials, but late millennial culture still continued after 9/11 till about 2006.

What is exactly considered Gen Y kid culture, though. To me, I've always thought of Gen Y kid culture as stuff like Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Pogs, Golden Age Nickelodeon, early Cartoon Network, Fox Kids, Power Rangers, TMNT, early Pokemon, and early Toonami. That's probably because that's what I grew up with, though.

That would be correct. In fact, this starter pack demonstrates things that Millennials grew up with and it's accurate.

I’m part of early gen z culture, and that is amazingly accurate :D. core gen z definitely ends this year, since the latest gen z borns (late 00s/early 10s borns) are starting to enter their core childhood.

I identify with the Late Millenial culture (2000-2006) & Early Gen Z culture (2006-2010) the most.

Pretty much. I honestly rather divide the childhood culture into two groups than three parts.

I identify with the Late Millenial culture (2000-2006) & Early Gen Z culture (2006-2010) the most.
I mainly associate with the second group with some of the first and little of the third.

1989-1993 = early Y. TMNT era.
1993-1998 = core Y. Power Rangers era.
1999-2003 = late Y. Dragon Ball Z era.
2004-2006 = Y/Z transition. I'm not sure... Runescape era? Lol.
2007-2010 = Early Z. Hannah Montana/Wii era.
2011-2016 = Core Z. Netflix/iPad era.

Let it be thus.

Gonna disagree with some of your year placements there. 2004 was a lot more transitional into Z culture than 2003; in 2004 Nick and CN cancelled 95% of their old shows, and CN changed their logo and format. Broadband surpassed dial-up for the first time in 2004, and the iPod became truly popular around that time (after Apple removed software restrictions).

Yeah. That's why the 2003-04 year is part of that transition since all those things happened during that time.
