2016 was terrible as a whole for music.  In fact, it was a year I did a lot of listening to other genres and oldies because I really didn't like most of pop music that year.  I have the fewest songs in my 2016 playlist in my MP3 library of any year since 1999 when I started my MP3 collection.  2017 isn't great but its an improvement over 2016.  The only reason I rated 2016 a 2 instead of a 1 is there were a few songs that came out in 2016 that I really, really loved and will remember the year for.

Remember that this is only your opinion, so you can't just say it was a terrible year and in my opinion it was one of the best years, if not the best year for music. :)

I'm hopeful that it will happen. This year has actually shown a few promising signs, in my opinion. Songs such as "Sign of the Times", "Malibu" and "Praying" have been refreshing and have helped improve the overall quality of mainstream music. Even "Despacito" is quite a change from what we've been hearing on the charts. Just on the topic of the different genres, it's hard to say if they're just one-offs or if they are actually precursors to what we may see in the not to distant future. 2007 had a few "hints" of what was to come, so it's definitely possible!

I can actually see pop music becoming less EDM influenced, like in the form of "Malibu" or "Praying". As you mentioned, EDM is already starting to drop in popularity, so it may be how things are progressing. This is a controversial opinion, but I can even see rock music making a return to the mainstream in some form. The guitar has been featuring much more prominently in releases this year and several rock albums have charted quite well on the album charts. I'm actually a bit surprised that "Sign of the Times" didn't result in more pop-rock releases this year, especially considering that it charted really well and received many positive reviews.

It would be pretty ironic if Lady Gaga was the one to really shake things up, considering that she drastically changed the music scene almost ten years ago! :P I agree that she is definitely still relevant enough. She's really the only person (who is already popular) who is capable of truly changing things, in my opinion. The real challenge will be to win over the minds of the public. People may not be too open to anything drastically different, unfortunately.
