Subject: 20th century decades in order of your favorite to least favorite?
Written By: DesiredUsernameWasTaken on 08/16/17 at 6:21 pm
This may seem like an odd idea for a thread, but I was just wondering. If you were to make a list of every decade of the 20th century in order of which you like the most to which you like the least, what would it be? For me it would go like this;
#1: 1980's
#2: 1990's
#3: 1960's
#4: 1970's
#5: 1950's
#6: 1940's
#7: 1910's
#8: 1920's
#9: 1930's
#10: 1900's

1. 1990s - Definitely the most well-rounded decade for popular culture.
2. 1980s - Loses to the 1990s because it was way more homophobic and had less impressive television aside from MTV. Still a legendary time for music, technology, style, movies, and all sorts of little things that make me truly wish that my childhood had taken place this decade.
3. 1960s - A ton of excellent music, especially from 1963 to 1969. Fashion is my favorite of the entire century. Round these out with some pretty cool movies and a few classic television shows like The Twilight Zone, and you have easily one of the better decades of the century. Still miles behind the 1990s and 1980s, though, due to the unacceptable living conditions for the LGBT community.
4. 1970s - Lots of incredibly artistic and lush music, plus some major groundbreakers in film. Not really my favorite decade for fashion, but overall it was solid.
5. 1930s - Yeah, the politics were total crap, but this was easily the greatest time for music until the 1960s. Jazz was at its early creative peak, with plenty of songs that truly mastered mood and harmonization. Fashion was also pretty solid, not to mention Hollywood was brimming with all sorts of fascinating and groundbreaking movies.
6. 1920s - Considering this decade is almost a century old, it's still quite memorable in retrospect. I'm not personally nearly as interested in silent films compared to talkies, but there was definitely an explosion of media that truly set the world on track towards the modern age of entertainment. The music was upbeat and catchy, with George Gershwin in particular composing the period's finest works. It was also much less conformist than the mid-20th Century.
7. 1950s - I have a soft spot for little aspects of this decade, like the fashion and movies, but the social environment was pure crap, due to McCarthyism and an uncomfortable social backwardness that America tried to tuck underneath a masquerade of paradise. The music was also fairly mediocre, even the rock and roll, which largely sounded like the same song being rehashed several times over.
8. 1900s - This is too primitive to really have much of an impact on me, but it gets minor points for producing ragtime music, barbershop quartets, and Peter Pan. Also, there was no World War like the two decades below it.
9. 1940s - Excluding the fashion and the movies produced during the early part of the decade, this was a truly awful decade for popular culture. Jazz music got quite a bit blander; I've never really enjoyed bebop as much as classic swing, while more conventional pop numbers were mostly watered down compared to the 30s. The movie industry went through a dark age from 1943 to 1949 due to war rationing, not recovering until the excellent year in cinema that was 1950. Then, of course, there was World War II and the Holocaust. Even after VJ Day, the lynching of African American veterans, plus the disgustingly socially conservative environment that arose out of McCarthyism meant the second half of the decade was hardly as big a relief as it should've been.
10. 1910s - Dead last because the 40s at least had a few great films, excellent fashion, and a few memorable songs (though it's still a lackluster decade for music). The 1910s had completely uninteresting fashion, underdeveloped movie and music industries, a devastating World War, and finally a plague that claimed the lives of millions near the end of the decade. There was little to nothing positive about this stretch of time compared to the rest of the 20th Century.

So what makes the 90s the most well-rounded decade?
It's just solid in pretty much every category. The music was great, the video games were great, the social attitudes were nice, the technology was optimal, and much of the fashion was quite nice, as well (though it's mostly the late 90s that I enjoy most in this respect). It doesn't have any serious weaknesses like the rest of the 20th century decades.

Domestic terrorism in the U.S. and still pretty high crime rates across major U.S. cities.
I agree with everything else you said though.

Crime's an issue in every decade. The 90s weren't the only decade with domestic terror attacks, either.

Of course crime is an issue every decade but the 1970s-1990s were decades with abnormally high crime rates across MOST major U.S. cities. Today, crime rates across MOST major cities are relatively low.
Also, the '90s had the most domestic terrorist attacks out of any decade in U.S. history and it also had the most fatal one still to this day (the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing).

If you also take the 2000s and 2010s into account, would you still say that the '90s were the most well-rounded decade for pop culture? I personally believe it would be the case.

Ummm, no idea to be honest I'm guessing it's to hard to rank all of them, but 90s/80s would be near the top and 1900s/10s would be at the bottom. As for the decades which I have lived through in the 21st century, it's too hard to decide as I really like both the 2000s and the 2010s. :)

Yep, the 90s would still win. For me, the 2000s would rank in-between the 1980s and 1960s, while the 2010s would land in-between the 1970s and 1930s. Both are at an advantage for being socially progressive on LGBT rights, but are held back by subpar music (though the 2000s were actually decent for the first half, plus threads of 2005). The 2000s were merely so-so for fashion and technology during the second half, while the 2010s have been quite awful for both. Early 2000s gaming was strong, but late 2000s gaming was not, while 2010s gaming is just flat-out mediocre. Social attitudes were not horrible in the 2000s, but they were just starting to get a bit superficial, while the 2010s have been utterly rotten. The 2000s were actually a pretty solid decade, but still I prefer the culture of the 1980s and 1990s.

Here's an opinion from someone who lived in none of them :D
90s (of course the most advanced and progressive, but it was a nice and worthy conclusion to a pretty eventful century so it clearly delivered) > 60s > 20s > 70s > 80s > 50s > 1900s >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1910s, 30s, 40s, whatever
