Subject: What do you think about retro-futurism?

Written By: TheReignMan99 on 06/29/17 at 1:22 pm

In case you didn't know, Retro-futurism is "a blend of old-fashioned "retro" styles with futuristic technology, retro-futurism explores the themes of tension between past and future, and between the alienating and empowering effects of technology."

Most retro-futurism centers around how people in the 1940s to 1960s envisioned futuristic tech and life. However, retro-futurism can be from pretty much any previous decade. Retro-futurism has been used to some extent in real life. Personally, I'm so fascinated by retro-futurism and I think that it's the perfect combination of two things (past ideas of the future and futuristic technology).

Here are some pics of retro-futurism:

Futurama was based of off retro-futurism. There was an exhibit at the 1939-40 World's Fair in New York City that was called "Futurama" (where the show got it's name and a little bit of it's premise from) and it depicted to the attendees..."The World of Tomorrow" and how the future would look like in 20 years (1959-60).

It's definitely my taste. It can easily slip into being too 'try hard' or 'look at us, we're so innovative and cutting edge'. But done right, it's awesome.

I'd be more interested to see 2000s retrofuturism than 1950s retrofuturism (e.g. the Fallout games). Nevertheless, it's still quite an interesting topic.

I know right. It's definitely awesome.

2000s retrofuturism? ??? I don't think that ideas of the future from the 2000s counts as retrofuturism because those ideas aren't much different (if at all) from today's vision of the future.

However, yes...it's definitely an interesting topic.

It seems to be assossiated a lot with the 1950s and early 60's.

Yeah....that's because most people in America at least were very optimistic about the future because of the Atomic Age, the Jet Age and the Space Race/Age.

From what I know of history, when Sputnik went into orbit in October 1957, that's when the space age began. Americans were envious of how the Soviets had sent the first satellite into space before them. As a result many Americans became space enthusiasts to try and beat the Soviets in the space race.

Yeah...you're correct.

Personally, I like the 1950s and early 1960s vision of the future rather than today's vision of the future. It's more practical while also still has character with a bit of sleekness. I also like a bit of the '70s (Star Wars) and the '80s (Back to the Future II) vision of the future.

I think the 1970's had the best sci-fi movies though, with Star Wars, Close Encounters of The Third Kind, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Logan's Run, Alien, etc.
