Subject: Second Time Around, Part II: Movies that received a theatrical re-release
Written By: yelimsexa on 10/12/16 at 7:59 am
Although it doesn't happen nearly as often now as it did in the days before home video, in response to the music re-release thread, list some movies that had been re-released again following their original release, and this includes both straight and special edition releases that may include additional scenes or remastered footage. Plus, feel free to include the movie if the reissue wasn't wide and only premiered at a local "movie palace" or drive-in, provided that the re-release was at least a year following its initial release.
Note: Remakes are considered a separate topic and video re-releases (hence "theatrical") don't count here.
Of course, I'll start with the dead giveaways: Many Walt-era Disney films, often every seven years and the Star Wars original trilogy Special Edition in 1997. Also, 1989 notably had a few re-releases: Wuthering Heights, Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of Oz (all with Golden Anniversary treatment) and Lawrence of Arabia. Many of these films only played at the "art house" cinemas, but had longer legs compared to the first-run films and proved that despite the availability of VCRs in pretty widespread use by then, a trip to the old cinema still felt like the best way to see those classics.

Mid 1970s: in the cinema, a re-release of "Gone With The Wind", I remember watching it on a Good Friday.
1979: Re-release of "Ben Hur", I took a bunch of friends to the cinema with me, a spectacle that had to be scene.
I will post more when I remember more movie viewing.

"Ben Hur" was on the 20th anniversary of its release.
We saw "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" on it's enhanced release in 1996.

The original 101 Dalmatians; that is, the animated film, was originally released in 1961, but has enjoyed four re-releases -- in 1969, 1979, 1985 and 1991 -- the last of which grossed as the 20th highest in domestic earnings; and was subsequently released to video in April 1992.
