The 90's decade has been popular in nostalgia for almost 10 years now. Whether it's been on the internet or mainstream.

80s, 90s, and 2000-2003 (there, I said it Jordan! ;D) seem to be lumped together into one monolith known as "the 90s" on Facebook etc.

With my friends on FB, nostalgia tends to be more 60s and 70s.

The hi-top fade is extremely popular with African Americans again (as well as other races), grunge-inspired flannel shirts seem to be everywhere, a lot of other clothing is dark and patterned, and shows like Fuller House, the 2012 incarnation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the upcoming revival of Twin Peaks have garnered a lot of hype.

However, I think the late 2010s will be dominated by late 90s nostalgia, with the upcoming revivals of Hey Arnold! and The Powerpuff Girls, as well as the 20th Anniversary rerelease of the original Pokémon games, being the earliest indicators.  Not to mention, The X-Files, which premiered in 1993 and was popular for all of the late 90s, is back on television.

I think 90s nostalgia generates a lot more money. You do have a point about 80s hits still dominating the radio, but I notice they have large segments for the 90s as well nowadays, which was not very common 5 years ago.

I'm just wondering when this '90s nostalgia thing will start to ease down (but then the '00s will take its place  :-\\). I do get tired of seeing nostalgia at times whether it's the '80s, '90s, or '00s. Plus all the negatives things that spawned due to the trend annoys me.

As of now early 00's nostalgia exists, but its in the state that the early 90's nostalgia had around 10 years ago. 90's nostalgia started in the late-ish '00s, but exploded sometime around the early '10s. At the time the nostalgia for the early '90s existed, but wasn't as big as 80's nostalgia was. Same thing is happening to the '00s. Early '00s nostalgia is there, but I'd wait until around the the early '20s for it to become a big trend. As time passes and younger people get on the internet you'll start seeing the nostalgia of younger internet users which would be nostalgia for different decades. No 10's nostalgia either, but give it time. I assume the '30s is where we'll start talking about this decade. It usually takes around 20 years for year in a decade to become popular among nostalgic people.

This is all just from my own thoughts/guesses anyway.

But if we are talking the mainstream, EARLY 90s(HW Bush years) nostalgia is in now, with the Straight outta Compton movie, Fuller House, Twin peaks revival coming, TMNT 2012. The core 90s nostalgia is sadly not in QUITE YET, with the exception of the recent Jurassic Park movie, new Independence Day film etc.

That's only a specific group, not the mainstream. give it 6 more years and probably it would make a mainstream impact.

One thing I've noticed is that in the indie gaming scene most indie devs tend to just take their inspiration from early 90's games.  Games such as Super Mario World or Sonic the Hedgehog (1990-1991). Or the Final Fantasy Games (1989-1994 games of FF1-4) for example. Nostalgia in terms of devs seems to be mainly in the 1st half of the 1990s. We have a few indie games that take inspiration from the 2nd half, but there aren't as many of them. The late NES games to early SNES/Genesis games.

Give that a bit more time. I see it on forums like this. But not in the general mainstream public or media. By the time we reach the 2020s I can see tons of people talking about early 2000's nostalgia. Mainstream nostalgia happens at a slower rate than Internet nostalgia.

I'd say about 30% '80s, 50% '90s, 10% '00s, and 10% for the "heritage" decades ('70s and older). I've noticed when I've posted on Youtube commercial breaks from the '80s and '90s, the '90s ones seem to be getting more views lately than the ones for the '80s. Even though I feel that '90s nostalgia maybe peaking right around now (or in 2017-18 like the '80s were doing about a decade ago), there is still lots of '80s nostalgia left over. We're going to finally get another Ghostbusters movie this year, the Goldbergs is still a fairly popular TV show, lots of '80s Academy Award Best Song winner instrumentals were played at the last Oscars, '80s-style tech and video games like Super Mario Maker and even VHS/Betamax titles that are hard to find. '80s flashback nights still seem to be the most popular decade at sporting events at this point. CNN will be airing a documentary about the decade it first went on the air soon. A recent Cover Girl commercial plays "Pump Up The Jam", an '80s/'90s cusper of a song that was recorded in 1989 but mostly associated with the '90s. I honestly haven't noticed much '00s (mostly for the early part of the decade) nostalgia yet outside of some hip hop stations playing some early '00s songs, but other trends like Nu Metal and Emo are still not seen as cool as are most TV shows of the decade. The current culture and feel just doesn't feel distinct enough yet from the '00s to touch off that nostalgia wave and due to that decade being unpopular, will take a while to form like how the '70s didn't do so until the early-mid '90s.

In addition to what has been described above for the '90s, we also have Crystal Pepsi once again, a tv show on the OJ Simpson case/trial, virtual reality a renewed trend in tech, the possibility of another Clinton in office, and '90s hairstyles (especially toward the later '90s) more popular now then they were for most of the '00s and early '10s.

But '90s nostalgia doesn't cover anything. Mariah Carey is nowhere nearly as popular as she was even in 2008 with her last #1 hit despite being the decade's biggest chart maker, you don't hear much about certain useless toys like Pogs and Power Wheels

Pretty much any decade nostalgia still exists. There could be people born in the late 1910s being nostalgic for the 1920s. But not enough. I think '50s nostalgia is the oldest decade for nostalgia purposes as of this post.

You can say the 20s is remembered just for Disney. The specific era goes completely extinct once the last of everyone born and lived in that generation transitioned until "I love the insert era here." events or whatever.

The incoming generations can dress like and imitate us, but can't exactly. Their just acting.

I think 1890s nostalgia took off in the 1920s actually. I'm not sure if there was 1880s nostalgia, though in France there was 1870s-1900s nostalgia in the 1920s (La belle époque as its called).

It does sound strange. 2016 is still VVVVVEEEERRRRYYYYY EARLY 3rd millennium and early 21st century. So it's weird to mention 3000 onward as its around the 4th millennium (well 3000 is the end of the 3rd Millennium) and 31st century. Makes me wonder what like in 3000 onward would be like. People in 3000s being nostalgic for the 2980s. And in the 3010s everyone is nostalgic for the 2990s. How interesting. I'm mainly interested in seeing what life would be like.

What really makes me chuckle is the thought that in 3000 people would be able to get on the internet (or whatever they have at the time) and dig up REALLY old websites. For example lets say this website exists up to 3000 and people would be able to view the old forums from 2015 or something. Seeing the discussions we have the culture of the period. But this is all assuming that these websites are even accessible by that point.

I honestly don't see Internet 's popularity surviving past 2040s/2050s, at least as we know it. Is that weird? I would hope we will replace it with something better, but I'm not sure if there is a something batter.

It's not weird. It just means old things will die and new things will form. The internet as of now would be a VERY outdated thing in 2040s/50s. I assume something else would replace it. If not then I assume the internet would have a lot of changes and we'd be in Web 7.0 or something.

If only technology worked that way. But from what history has taught us is that technology will always progress to greater things. Although what's funny is that when tech becomes so advanced to the point where time machines exist then you could just go back in time to the '80s. Problem solved. It'll just take a lot of years to do it.

As time moves on so those the life expectancy of an individual thanks to advancements in medicine. We'd get to the point where being 85 feels as if you're now entering 40.

American Hi-Fi aren't necessarily my favorite, either. I like the first album but there's much better Pop Punk. I didn't listen to Blood and Lemonade, yet, though. The real 00's are a dark age of winged hair nonsense that I would never want to live through again.

I will listen to Me Vs. Hero and see if I like it but that name makes me think they'll suck.

I hate the intro because it sounds stuck in 2005 but then the chorus goes to 1999 and I like it. Parts of the song (the good parts) sound like they're off Lit's A Place in the Sun. Not too bad. Speaking of stuck in 2005, you hear the new Simple Plan album that just came out? It's awful! One of the worst things I've ever heard.
