Subject: Millennial Teens movies

Written By: Richbrings2life on 01/25/16 at 3:23 pm

Here's my opinion on teens movies that defines the Millennials generations (1981-1997) based on the age cohorts:

Older Millennials (1981-1985), Core Millennials (1986-1991), and Young Millennials (1992-1997).

Okay, here's goes the movies:

Great list!

Add Superbad and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World to the late millennials list. Michael Cera is 10/10.

It's funny how I know a lot of the core millennials section too and not just the late millennials, despite still being a kid throughout the core millennials era.

I saw White Chicks in the movie theater with my dad when I was 8, that was so hilarious at the time I tell you! I definitely remember Spider-Man 1-3 and Freaky Friday though. I didn't care for Mean Girls or Princess Diaries. I remember seeing trailers for You Got Served on TV.

Anyways, for the late millennials portion which was my core era, I loved the Dark Knight, 21 Jump Street, and This Is The End. I wasn't into the Twilight series but I remember many of my classmates loving it. I think it's a close one between us late millennials or early millennials who had the best movies.

1992 belong in the late millennial list. People born that weren't even in high school when most of the "core" millennial movies came. Sorry, but there's no way that I can be convinced that people born in 1992 belongs with the core millennials based on this list.

Heck some of the movies listed under late Y would appeal to 1991ers and even some 1990ers, since they were still in high school when some of them came out

I guess you believe in the 1992/1993 line, which I think is BS. Personally I don't see any real difference between the two. But hey, your list, your rules.

I agree with musicguy! 1992 and even 1991 is on the cusp of core and late, just like 1985 and 1986 born are on the cusp of early and core.1993 on the other hand is STRICTLY late!

Yeah, if you add 92 to the Late Millennials list we get White Chicks and She's The Man. Those were teen movies for me :p

I don't think it's worth decadeologizing that stuff and making blanket statements. I went to school with 92 borns and a lot of my best friends are born 92. We had the exact same childhood and teenagehood. BUT not to derail this thread. Most the movies OP listed are teen movies for me if not young adult, he got those right. It's a really good list.  :)

You were born in late 1993 right? Which means you would've grown up in school with most 1994 born's.

1992, or the late 1991-mid 1992 group A.K.A. Class of 2010, feel like the core/late millennial cusp to me.

As a 1996 born I'm on the cusp of late millennials/early plurals when it comes to movies. Assuming that Hunger Games will be remembered as apart of the early Z movies.

Yes, I graduated in 2010.

In Ontario high school used to be 5 years, but they cut off the 5th year in 2002, so anyone who was in school before then is graduating a year early. Or at least I think that's how it is. In reality I think that's how it is, but my sister born 2005 will also be graduating in 2022 so I'm pretty sure you can just send your kids to school whenever up here lol.

I don't find a huge difference between 93 and 94 borns either. My brother is born 94 and we have the same everything.

ANYWAY I really think we should stay on topic. Anyone got anymore teen movies?

Wow, I had just left middle school by the time you graduated, yet I'm 3 years younger than you! When I was a freshman in high school, there was a senior in my Biology class who came from Canada, she was born in late 1993 (close enough to 1994) and she ended up graduating in the 2011 class. Now I get it. Does this apply to almost everybody in Canada? I also remember you saying you were in 6th grade during the 2003-04 school year too instead of 5th grade. Did you skip Kindergarten, or what age were you when you started mandatory school?

Some of these movies are off by within the cohorts and are not even part of the teen movie category. I don't remember Matrix, The Dark Knight and Borat being considered teen movies at all. In addition, How is She's the Man part of the Core Millennials while John Tucker, Juno, Step Up are part of the Late Millennials?

This! I have many 1992 friends that I relate with very well and don't even see a difference at all. Even more, yes some of those movies from the Late Millennial category would appeal to 1990 and 1991 people as well.

I say it depends how large the generation is. I have lots of 1991 and 1992 friends and I see us along with 1994 people in a mixture of core/late Millennials with more of the main characteristics.

And there was a guy who was born sometime around the spring of 1992, who was only a grade ahead of me. It's not like I could only relate to those within my year. I don't know why you are so insistent on school years, but hey, it's your opinion.

Yeah, exactly! I saw that movie like... 5 times in theaters in 2002! And I am an early millennial.... or maybe... I don't know my own generation anymore!

American Beauty is a pretty good movie, too. I know people who thought it was a teen movie because of the actors and went to see it. Big surprise!

It came out in May 2002! I turned 20 in August! So I was still 19 when I saw it. Say what you will but the early 00's were still my time and they were a time were I got to experience seeing Spider-Man and rap along to Sum 41 in the theater. ;D :P

My teen movies came out from 1995-2003! And what good movies they were... :D

Age matters more? Now wait a second. As a Winter 1996 born I always lump myself with those born in Spring/Summer 1996 and those born in Fall 1995. It wouldn't make any sense for someone born in the Fall to be the age they are going to turn that year for most of the year. Mathematically if you're born from January-June you are the age you're going to turn for most of the year, but if you're born from July-December you are the age you turned the previous year for most of the year. That's why a lot of states have September cutoffs for a reason. Like seriously, how could someone born in like November 1993 be completely different than someone born in January 1994 when they grew up together in the same grade, that's like saying someone born March 1994 can't relate to someone born in May 1994 despite both being 2 months apart. "Hey I'm born on December 31, 19XX I'm going to turn XX this year I can't wait so excited...." "I'm born on January 1, 19XX, damn I gotta wait a whole another year for my birthday." ::)

It's funny because I literally had this same conversation with a group of people I knew in my personal life a couple days ago. 8)

Edit: School years or seasons are a huge way of defining cultural periods. Bigger than a lot of people think.

When it comes to relations I just think those who're within 2-3 years of each other have a lot of similarities. It's like if you have a brother/sister who're 2 years apart from you. Overall there wouldn't be a big difference between you all. School years could also work I suppose. Those in the same grade as have a lot of things that you'll be able to relate to. Those who're just 1 year above or below you also have a lot of relations. Same with those 2 years above or below you. A simple 2-3 years is not enough to show big difference between a lot of people to me.

I think the differences of someone 1-2 years from you are very minimal, if at all

3-4, moderate differences, but nothing drastic

5-6 somewhat drastic, but not a generation gap

7-8, pretty drastic, somewhat of a generation gap

9 or older, drastic, definitely a generation gap

So for me being a Winter 1996' born anybody born in mid 1991 and before or late 2000 and after most likely had a much different childhood experience; while someone from as early as early 1992 or late 1991, to as late as mid 2000 would've had a somewhat similar childhood experience

You obviously didn't read my whole post, regarding my friends who don't completely conform to the typical grade/year age. I never said that there was a huge difference between someone born in late 1993 and early 1994. Quite the contrary. What I was saying is that school years are not a good determiner for generation brackets. Now, maybe you couldn't relate to anyone outside of your grade/year, but most of us on here can. Not to mention, cut off dates vary, and not just between countries, but also states. Also, you have to consider the fact that some people start school a year early or a year late. By your definition, mxcrashxm has more in common with someone born nearly a year before him, than me, despite the fact that I'm barely a month younger. I believe in an age range, where you share similarities with people a few years younger and a few years older than yourself, regardless of grade/year.

I never had the fries, I may have had the ketchup way back when I was little. It's been so long though so I can't say, because my taste buds have changed SO MUCH over the years. My picky eating days as a kid or loving mediocre type of food or candies days are long over. I try all kinds of fun, healthy recipes now. Although I still eat unhealthy sometimes. I remember how Sunny D, Capri-Sun, Kool-Aid, or HIC used to taste like heaven to me as a kid, now after drinking lots of water, gatorade, or 100% juices as I've gotten older, I go back to those and it literally tastes like water with sugar poured all over it. 8-P

I still drink sodas sometimes today, especially after going to a restaurant. I don't drink soda everyday like many college students do. I drink plenty of water or powerade/gatorade, but I seriously need to get back in the gym pronto though. I agree completely. This list is really flawed. The guy doesn't provide any explanation for his (rather inconsistent) lists.
Same here. He should have gave statements on why those movies define each group within the generation. Now the movie listings are great, but a few are off and some of them can definitely appeal to two of the 3 cohorts as well.

He just has to put She's The Man in the Late Millennials list and it'll be okay.
It's more than that. There's a 2007 movie in the Core category while there's a few 2006 movies in the Late category. Additionally, some of those movies that are listed aren't even considered teen movies like Borat, The Dark Knight and The Interview.

If were defining it as 1981-1997, mathematically speaking it would make sense to divide it like this:

Older Millennials: 1981-1986 (a total of 6 birth years)

Core Millennials: 1987-1991 (a total of 5 birth years)

Younger Millennials: 1992-1997 (a total of 6 birth years)

Other than that your updated post is pretty good!

The only thing I take issue with is the fact that movies like Borat and Superbad are classified as "teen movies" for millennials born between 1992 and 1997.  The Dark Night, Juno, and the Interview also fall into that category.  These are movies that were widely loved by anybody who was in their teens and twenties and even older at the time and are cultural icons.

John Tucker Must Die and 17 Again on the other hand were teen movies and were more than likely not relevant to anybody over 21 when they came out.

Superbad was set in high school though. I can agree with the other stuff though
