Subject: Alternate versions of songs released for other countries

Written By: whistledog on 07/16/15 at 11:19 am

Sometimes a song by an artist will have a different version released in other countries usually due to the style of music being popular or because it's a collaboration with an artist who is not popular in all countries.  What are some?

Here is one to begin:  Olly Murs is a British singer.  His 5th UK single titled 'Heart Skips A Heat' in 2011 was released as his first single in North America.  The original release in the UK was a collaboration with British hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks.  The US version features American rapper Chiddy Bang.  I am not sure why the change up because though Rizzle Kicks have never had a hit in the US or Canada, neither did Olly Murs at the time, which also confuses me why only the US got the Chiddy Bang version

When I think of an alternate version of a song I think of Don't Forget Me (When I'm gone) by Glass Tiger which has one version for Canada and one version for the US.  :)

I was going to post on here the other day, but I got busy with other things instead.

I can think of various songs that had alternate mix versions released, most likely for different countries.

One example that comes to mind is the Thompson Twins' "Lay Your Hands On Me". One version seems "all pumped up" so to speak (particularly in the chorus), and another seems to "flow more smoothly".

Here's the one (labeled as "original US version" on the video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYBHPYKeU1c

And here's the "smoother" one (labeled as "UK version" on the video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcBt_xfVy8U (I prefer this one, personally)

Boy Krazy's That's What Love Can Do originally came out in the UK in 1991, where it flopped.  Two years later, in 1993, it was released in North America, but with a different arrangement and music video, though the song itself was otherwise the same.  This time around, the track was a success, making it to #18 in the US and #6 in Canada.

The one song that immediately springs to mind is:

Billy Ocean - Caribbean Queen

I'm not exactly sure why the song had to be altered for European and African markets, but here you are:

Good choices everyone, especially Caribbean Queen.  In that original video for Caribbean Queen, there is an error that I don't think they noticed until after it was finished:  At 1:00 in the video, the poster says European Queen.  Then at 1:02, it says Caribbean Queen

How about the 2010 hit 'Higher' by Taio Cruz.  The original release was a duet with Kylie Minogue, however when released in America, they chose rap artist Travie McCoy instead as a duet.  Not sure why the change because Kylie Minogue is awesome

Here's another one:

Cher Lloyd is a British singer who finished 4th on the 7th series of the UK X Factor.  Her third UK single 'Want U Back' in 2012 was released as her debut North American single

The UK and International version features guest vocals from Astro, a 14 year old rap artist who finished 7th place on Season 1 of the American X Factor.  His part was removed from the North American version.

Okay, here's another one...

There seem to be two known mixes of "She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby, both of which I've actually heard on the radio in the US.

First of all, here's the "normal" version, which most of you are probably familiar with:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBIps187MKk

The "extended" version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZo7jDHryNc

This one starts with only a synthesizer, has a brief voiceover a few seconds after the drumbeat starts (not occurring in the normal version), followed by an instrumental version of the first "long" verse; does not contain the first short verse (the one that ends with biology). The other two verses are switched in sequence, and each contain a certain modification in them (particularly at the 1:45 and 2:22 marks). In addition, the verse about chemicals ends with the same "poetry in motion" segment as the "machinery" verse. The synthesizer by itself returns at about the 3:16 mark. From 3:24 onward, is just like the normal mix... except for an extended repeated rhythm track past the normal ending (4:20; roughly 3:40 in the normal mix, which simply ends right there).

Basically, the part from 0:52 to 2:18 in this "extended" mix is pretty much the same as the part from 1:15 to 2:41 in the "normal" mix, and the part from 2:19 to 2:43 in this "extended" mix is pretty much the same as the part from 0:40 to 1:04 in the "normal" mix.

Not sure if one version was released to other countries.

^ I know both versions.  The extended one was from his 1982 EP 'Blinded By Science'.  The other one was from his 1982 LP 'The Golden Age of Wireless'.  I have heard both versions played on the radio

Big hit for this guy in his native Oz, but it spawned versions (either by him or other artists) for almost every country on earth! Don't believe me? Looky here!  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27ve_Been_Everywhere
