"Old Shep" is a song written and composed by Red Foley and Arthur Willis, and originally performed by Foley, about a dog Foley had owned as a child. (In reality, the dog, poisoned by a neighbor, was a German shepherd who had responded to the name of Hoover.) Foley and Willis wrote and composed the song in 1933. Foley first recorded the song in 1935, again in 1941 and 1946.
On October 3, 1945, Presley sang "Old Shep" at age ten for his first public performance, a singing contest at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show. Dressed as a cowboy, he stood on a chair to reach the microphone. He came in fifth place, winning $5 and a free ticket to the fair rides. At sixteen years of age, in 1951, he again performed it for a talent show at L. C. Humes High School, where he was a student, winning an encore for his performance. As a single Elvis' version of "Old Shep" reach #47 in the US Hot Charts in 1956.

The Suicide Machines - Sometimes I Don't Mind
A 2000 pop-punk song dedicated to the singer's dog. Very sweet lyrics that could be taken as those of a love song to a woman until one hears the lyrics of the second half of the song that make more explicit references to endearing canine behaviors.
