Subject: Did online gaming destroy the variety of gaming?

Written By: mxcrashxm on 03/13/14 at 10:51 pm

What do you guys think? I was a huge gamer. I played adventure, action, puzzle, racing, party, role-playing, arcade and other types of games. Now I don't unfortunately because I feel like online gaming killed the gaming community. For most online games, all I have seen is shooting/actions games (CoD, Halo, Battlefield) and not the variety I use to see. I have seen a few adventure and racing online gaming, but not much as shooting. I feel like not many people play all types of games like back in the NES, SNES, PS1, and Xbox eras. What happened?

AAA FPSes and social-media-harvesting apps like Farmville and Candy Crush Saga aren't the only genres.

There are dozens of fantastic commercial games out there too - you can lose weeks in Fallout/Skyrim, and if that still isn't doing it for you, find a genre you like and see what other people have building.  There are dozens of independent game developers out there doing stuff in every genre imaginable: http://indiegames.com/index.html

Gaming is as big as it's ever been.  It is an awesome time to be a gamer.

Thank you. I'll check out the website you linked. It's just that I have not seen the variety of gaming like I used to in the last few years. Now today, there are non shooting games which I have played and they were good, but not the good where you can play hours on end and not get tired of it. Also, in your opinion, do you think online gaming killed the multiplayer offline gaming?

"multiplayer offline"?

I'm coming from a PC gamer perspective, but LAN parties didn't happen because people were interested in hauling their machines to their friends' house and wiring things up, they happened because wired ethernet beat dialup on lag, and because it was faster to burn a CD-ROM or just mount a hard drive onto the LAN for sharing than it was to try and download gigabytes of stuff through whatever connectivity you had to the internet.  They had a social function (showing off one's gear to one's friends, consuming beer and pizza in a social setting) that's difficult to replicate online, but the gaming hasn't changed that much.  Yelling at someone through a headset isn't that different from yelling at someone sitting next to you.

thats true except, people can hear your voice when you are online and offline, only people who are in the house can hear you. Also, that was the best thing about offline gaming because when you are playing with friends side by side, you never get bored. When you are playing online multiplayer with your friends, it gets boring because you're alone in the room and it's not the same. You can hear them,  but you can't see them.
