Subject: "Changed My Mind" songs

Written By: AmericanGirl on 02/16/14 at 12:03 pm

Here's a thread for any songs you changed your mind from the first listening to later/most recent listens

Either 1) you disliked the song at first and now like it, or 2) you initially liked it but no longer do.

(If you don't like the song now, you can merely tell us what it is; if you like it now, post it  ;D )

The first time I heard this song I thought it was the weirdest thing I'd ever heard; it was so different.  But after about a half dozen times listening to it, its brilliance shown to me and I changed my mind.  Paul Simon - Loves Me Like a Rock:

On the other hand, when I first heard Debby Boone's You Light Up My Life I thought it sounded lovely, fresh, a great song.  After about three dozen listens, I couldn't stand it anymore

Great thread.

Mine is not a song but an artist.  When I was younger I didn't mind Billy Joel but now the opening chords of any one of his songs will send me into a fit.  I'm not sure why but I just cannot tolerate him on any level.

A song that I had dismissed but now enjoy is "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer.  When they overplayed it on the radio, it was this sappy, annoying song to me but now that I can play it at my leisure, I do think it's adorable.

I've got so many songs that I've changed my mind about. Usually there the ones that get overplayed on the radio. An example would be Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On". At first I thought it was lovely and romantic, but then I would hear it twice a day---and sometimes even three times!! (no exaggeration) What made it worse, was when they threw in some clips from Titanic.

On the other hand, I never hated this song, but I was rather neutral about it. Now that I listen to it more and more, I see its beauty:

This song:

When I first heard it, I didn't like it. But, to be fair, I was only about 7 or 8 when I first heard it. i don't know how many years later I relistened to it and thought, WOW!!! And now I can't believe that there was a time when I DIDN'T like it.

On the other hand, when the song Run Joey Run came out, I LOVED it. Now, I say to myself, "What what I thinking?" The song is just so...judge for yourself:

Yeah, I think of it as a joke now.

Side note, I think I met David Geddes father one time. When I lived in Conn. I was down at the beach with a bunch of my mother's friends. There was one guy there who was bragging about his "Boy." He kept saying, "My boy this" & "My boy that." He then said that his "boy" had a song called "Run Joey, Run." I was shocked.

That happens with me sometimes. When a song is climbing the charts, radio stations will play the heck out of it and I won't wanna hear it at all... but after it drops off the charts and receives less airplay, I'll actually start to like it. One such song I've felt this way about is Kylie Minogue's 2002 hit "Can't Get You Out Of My Head".

I Need A Man, a 1987 hit for Eurythmics.  This one was not a Top 40 hit in the US, but it was in Canada and was very popular.  I always hated it because I thought it was so dull and drab compared to their other work, but a few years ago, I gave it another chance, and the more I listened, it's a really good song!

Song I used to like, but now don't.
Babe by Styx. When I first heard it, I liked it. At that point, I liked everything STYX recorded. After hearing that song so many times on AM radio back when it was released, I just couldn't stand the sappiness anymore. I cannot listen to the song anymore.

Song I didn't like years ago, but now I do.
Time by Pink Floyd. When I first heard it about 40 years ago, I didn't get why it was so popular.  After a few years I began to like the song, and now it's in my top 20 of all time.

When I first heard Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks, I really liked it-until my sister played it over and over and over and over and over and over and.... I think that was just one afternoon-AND I AM JOKING!!! She played it I don't know how many times in one day. It was like that was the only record she had, which it wasn't-but the only one she wanted to listen to that day. Now, I can't handle hearing it.

It was a similar story to Smoke On The Water. We lived next door to a band and that was the ONLY song they knew how to play. It seemed like they played it 24 hours a day/7 days a week/365 days a year. Of course it was THAT many times but it just seemed like it. And you would think with all that practicing, they would be good but they were pretty bad. To this day when I hear those first few notes of the song, I CRINGE!!!!

Hypnotize-Notorious Big. I used to feel "meh" towards this song but now I rather like it, and I'm usually not into hip-hop.

I swore I didn't like Taylor Swift, and then I heard "Trouble" in Dunkin Donuts one morning. I didn't realize it was her until it played on the radio in my friend's car and I raved about it and said it was Taylor.
I almost leapt out on the freeway.
So, I like Taylor now.

I couldn't have given the time of day when this came out (1982 - well, I was pretty young back then!)

Always thought of it as a loooong, tedious piece of tosh...and what was that bloke doing? Trying to sing, or croak?

But now, older and wiser (!), I see it for the classic that it surely is...

I used to hate this song.  I don't why I used to hate this song but it seems like a really cool song.  I really felt sad when Maurice and Robin died.

I feel the opposite of what you feel. The first few times I heard it..not bad. But it was overplayed, and was disco. Everyone at our high school despised this song when it was on the charts in 1977-78 (coz it was disco and/or the Bee Gees)...I don't think I can listen to this song anymore. It's just about the worst disco song, for me. Not the worst one, but it's up there.  Give me Pink Floyd anyday...

I happen to enjoy Bee Gees, I would agree that this song or any Bee Gees songs are overplayed sometimes.

Yeah.  When I was a teenager they were still playing this song.  So you couldn't blame me for hating it as much as I did.  :)

This song here, I heard it on Pandora a few times and usually skipped it because it didn't sound like my style. But then one of my friends had to sing it for a competition, and I heard it several times and it grew on me.

"Hot N Cold" by Katy Perry... it's dancy and upbeat, but I don't really favor it as much as I used to. (However, I will still listen to it.)

...and speaking of Katy Perry, there is one song of hers I used to not really care for, but lately I seem to enjoy listening to: "California Gurls" (2010); I find it catchy and upbeat.

This was one of the most annoying songs I had ever heard in my life the first time I stumbled across it as a kid. Nowadays, however, it's one of my very favourite hits of the 1950s. As far as stock 12-bar blues songs go, this has such an irresistibly catchy melody that it's like the quintessential track of its genre, in my opinion.

For a good amount of time, this was an absolute 80s classic to me, pretty much encapsulating every single element that endears me so much to the decade's music. However, having recently zeroed in on the lyrics, which I initially didn't focus on and assumed were just a simple song about a crush, oh my god, this is one of the most despicably douchey pop rock hits I've ever come across. It's bad enough Bryan Adams is singing about willfully cheating on his girlfriend, but he even explicitly spells out how nice, loyal, sensitive, and undeserving of misfortune she is, which sends an awful message and is especially objectionable to me personally, as I've been the victim of backstabbing jerks countless times. I would give the benefit of the doubt to Adams if he expressed a clear sense of remorse for his affair, but it's pretty evident he doesn't, as he comes to a confident decision and celebrates it through such a joyous tune.
