Subject: VHS Nostalgia

Written By: Mat1991 on 02/03/14 at 9:15 am

Is anybody else experiencing a surge of nostalgia for the VHS era?

Lately I've been considering re-purchasing a lot of the VHS tapes that I used to own, mainly for nostalgic reasons. I can't be alone in that sentiment.

I do sometimes.

I still own some VHS tapes of various movies, a collection of music videos, home recorded movies(of me from 2003 and 2005, and one from Christmas Eve 2002), and a birthday party recorded in 1989(I was in it of course.). But I can't watch them because I don't have a VCR.

VHS was still the best choice to record TV program and if you wanted to watch the stuff at a different place until recently. My family had a DVD recorder from 2005 on and this was SO bad, slow and unreliable.

I do have a VHS collection, but as soon as a dvd comes out of a particular title, the VHS gets trashed. It's just not an easy format to work with - big, bulky, rewind, fast forward, tape chewing, mold. I love the whole dvd package - not too bulky, decently sized to showcase artwork / packaging (unlike Blu-ray) etc.

But you are right - certain titles were released on vhs which may never get the dvd treatment, so for that reason I will keep my VHS player for a long time to come. I bought my latest VHS player in 2005!

I also hope cds stay in circulation for much longer - this whole digital age is killing serious music collectors who prefer tangible products.

I still have a big box of ...maybe 30 (?) tapes. Everything is self-recorded stuff from TV. Nowadays it's more interesting to see the commercials in between than the actual movies I have recorded (mostly 30s and 40s b&w stuff).

I only have few movie retail VHS tapes - probably because we got a VCR pretty late (late 1995).

At one point, I used to have close to 1,000 VHS movies (all store bought).  I would basically go to flea markets and for the right price, buy known movies that went to theatres.

When VHS started to fade away, I took all those tapes to a local used CD/DVD/Game store and sold them at $2 each.  They bought so many from me that they couldn't re-sell, they decided to no longer buy VHS tapes lol.

There ended up being about 400 or so they didn't buy, so I placed an ad for the remainder as is, and sold them all as is for $250.  I kept all the music/concert related tapes, the Playboy Video Centerfolds (which to date I still have never watched all of them) and the movie 'Streets of Fire'

My most treasured VHS' are the blank ones which I filled with old tv shows, music performances etc. Lots of rare stuff which you won't find on You Tube even. I'm hoping to transfer them to dvd at some point - either professionally or I'll look into it myself.

More or less the same with mine. (In fact, between 2004 and 2008 I taped various things from the TV onto video, including "blooper-reel" specials for TV and gameshow moments.) I'd love to be able to transfer some of the stuff on my VHSes to DVD as well, but I wouldn't know how to go about it. I'd also probably want to edit out commercials, too.

Unfortunately I don't have 80s vhs tapes. The oldest is from 1996 or so.

In the late 1980s we got our first VCR and my parents began taping their soap operas every day; often times they'd tape over one week of soaps when the space ran out so that they could reuse it as much as possible. So some of their old tapes date back to 1989 or so. Not sure if said tapes would still play a quarter-of-a-century later (the picture might be a little goofy), but it would be kinda neat (for lack of a better word) if they did.

I also have a bunch of old One Life To Live eps that I recorded. Not to mention a bunch of personal tapes like the plays the kids did when I was doing my student teaching. I also have the first film that I created along with the raw tapes from that.

Carlos converted a bunch of my VHS to DVD but some of them wouldn't record because of piracy protection on them.

Forget that.  For about 20 or 30 bucks you can buy a device that let's you upload them onto your computer.
VHS to mp4 or avi.  That's way better than converting them to dvd.

I dunno. To me, nostalgia for VHS is like nostalgia for 8-tracks. Sure, they captured a certain era in pop culture, but the actual technology absolutely blows compared to what we have today.

I have a box full of VHS tapes that I shot on a camcorder in the early 90's when I was in the Army in Germany, as well as an old TV/VCR combo, and one day I thought I'd start going through them, but I quickly got so damn tired of rewinding and fast-forwarding them that I said the hell with it and put them back away.

I liked VHS tapes, but really, I got tired of crying every time an MJ tape I had snapped. And dozens have snapped over the years. I've lost alot of stuff because of the tape snapping and getting stuck in the player.

Also, the amount of panic and wanting to hang yourself that sets in when a "dirty" movie gets stuck in the player and you can't ask your parent for help because you're 15 and literally have to take the VCR apart with a fingernail file to get the tape out, is not one of my fondest memories.  :o

Recently I've taken interest in this format, and it shows as I have over 50 classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles VHS tapes. I find it currently a great time to buy as a cheaper alternative to newer releases, especially in bulk lots on eBay or at my local thrift stores (one sells them for just a quarter each!) I especially seek the never released to DVD releases along with most kid's shows from the '80s/early '90s.

But VHS nostalgia is special to me since I was RAISED on it. Most of my childhood is preserved via VHS tapes spanning the late '80s and '90s. Most of the tapes my family purchased over the years are still with us, and sentimental value keeps them around. The oldest tape that my parents recorded was original news coverage of the Challenger disaster.

Despite this nostalgia, VHS remains a weak market for collecting much like 8-tracks are, with a few exceptions mostly due to a lack of demand. As a result, my most sought after tapes are original home movies, TV commercials, and stuff that never gets released on DVD (most game shows, soap operas, news programs, etc.) I still find blank, uncrecorded VHS tapes at second-hand stores on occassion.

Funny thing. In German electronic stores new blank VHS tapes are still available. They are in a hidden corner, but they still exist. Along with blank cassette tapes.
They haven't changed the layout since the late 90s though - for example there is still an old-fashiond black CRT tv on the cover.

I just found 19 VHS tapes

16 of them contain 2 eps of Cagney & Lacey when it aired in syndication sometime between 97-2001
It includes the original pilot and two reunion movies

1 tape of the Mary & Rhodareunion movie (probably the original broadcast) from 2000

1 tape with (supposedly) the wedding singer
1 take with (supposedly) circle of friends

17 of these tapes should have commercials in them

The last two I say supposedly because a friend gave them to me from his collection so I have no idea if they were taped over or not.

$5 + shipping if any one wants them.
If I find more VHS' I can fit in the box I'll add them no extra charge (except shipping)

I guess the reason I'm nostalgic for VHS tapes is because of the commercials/previews that precede the movies (coming to theaters for the 1992 holiday season...  :D), as opposed to today, where I always skip straight to the menu on DVDs.

When it comes to animated movies, I like seeing the original darker/lighter shades of the animation.
