Subject: Actors/Actresses best known roles - different opinions?
Written By: whistledog on 09/14/13 at 5:41 pm
I was having a discussion at work with someone who is a BIG Star Trek fan, and he mentioned that the actor Rene Auberjonois is best known as Odo from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Given what the Star Trek Universe has become over the years, I can sort of understand this, but I always thought he was best known as Clayton Endicott from Benson
Take Chevy Chase for example. Would you say he is best known as Irwin R. Fletcher (aka Jane Doe) or as Clark W. Griswold?
What are some other debatable ones?

I think of Rene Auberjenois from Benson.
I wonder if "which character you remember someone by" can be based on your age?
Here are a few I have thought of.
Mary Tyler Moore: Mary Richards (MTM) or Laura Petrie (Dick Van Dyke show). I will remember her as Laura Petrie, because I saw that show first (and she was a crush of mine :) )
Katherine Helmond: Jessica Tate or Mona Robinson? For me, she will always be Jessica.
Here's 3 from the Andy Griffith show:
Ron Howard: Opie Taylor or Richie Cunningham (Happy Days)? I think of him as Richie. My parents always called him "Opie"
Andy Griffith: Sheriff Andy Taylor? Or Matlock?
Don Knotts: Barney Fife? Or Ralph Furley (Three's Company)?
Larry Hagman: Major Tony Nelson ( I dream of Jeannie) or J.R. Ewing (Dallas)? Probably J.R. in this case.
Michael J Fox: Alex Keaton (Family Ties) or Mike Flaherty (Spin City) ? Probably Alex.
Jack Klugman: Oscar Madison (Odd Couple) or Quincy?
Michael Landon: Little Joe (Bonanza) or Charles Ingalls? (LHOTP)

It could be an age related thing indeed. When I think of Michael Landon, the first thing that comes to mind is Jonathan from Highway to Heaven
Michael J. Fox to me will always be Marty McFly first, Alex P. Keaton second

Michael J Fox is always Alex P Keaton to me.

Don Knotts is Barney Fife (before my time but it made a bigger impression)
What about Bob Denver? Gilligan or Maynard G Krebs. Gilligan for me.

Yeah, it's probably (most likely) age related. And it also depends on what part of the world you live in. For example, "Benson" was never aired over here, so I naturally think of René Auberjonois as Odo.
Chevy Chase, to me, is Clark W. Griswold. But I guess you can also call him Al. :D

Good call on that one, Howard.
Bob Newhart. The Bob Newhart show in the 70s? Or Newhart in the 80s?
Bill Cosby: From "I Spy" in the 1960s? Fat Albert cartoon in the 70s? Cliff Huxtable in the 80s?

And our buddy David Hasselhoff. "Knight Rider" or "Baywatch" or drunk with a cheeseburger on the floor?

Bob Newhart in the 80's. I don't think I have ever seen an episode of the original series.
Bill Cosby is a toss up between Fat Albert and Dr Huxtable.
Neil Patrick Harris is most definitely Doogie.
The Hoff will always be Knight Rider.

Susan Dey, I know her from LA Law, but I also know her from a 90s sitcom with Jay Thomas called Love and War hat I watched all the time!
Pam Anderson, I always think of Lisa the Tool Girl on Home Improvement's Tool Time
Tiffani Theissen will always be Kelly Kapowski from Saved By the Bell, but I do enjoy her on White Collar quite much
Teri Hatcher, I think of her as "real and spectacular" from Seinfeld and Penny Parker from MacGyver

before playing Lois Lane Teri Hatcher was dancing mermaid on Love Boat the New wave (or next wave or whatever) but she will always be Lois first to me...
susan Dey is Laurie Partridge
Marcia Cross was Kate Saunders on OLTL... she was going to marry Cord Roberts when Tina interupted the wedding with that stupid baby Milagro.... later I think the baby was Max's and they named it Al or something... I think that's how it all went down... anyway i will always remember her for OLTL way before the other two shows...
Angie Harmon.... I loved her on the short lived Woman's Murder Club and I love her on Rizzoli & Isles but it will always be the L&O that comes to mind first.

Apart from Bill Bixby (Hulk) and Robert Wagner (Hart to Hart), I agree with all those above
Here's some tricky ones ...
Lee Majors - The Six Million Dollar Man or The Fall Guy ? The Fall Guy
Ted Knight - Ted Baxter (Mary Tyler Moore Show), Judge Smails (Caddyshack) or Henry Rush (Too Close For Comfort) ? Too Close For Comfort
Tim Olyphant - Seth Bullock (Deadwood), Marshal Givens (Justified), Thomas Gabriel (Live Free or Die Hard) or Agent 47 (Hitman) ? Live Free or Die Hard
Conrad Bain - Dr. Harmon (Maude) or Mr. Drummond (Diff'rent Strokes) Diff'rent Strokes
Doris Roberts - Theresa Falco (Angie), Flo, Father Tim's mother (Soap), Mildred Krebbs (Remington Steele) or Marie Barrone (Everybody Loves Raymond) Everybody Loves Raymond
Pierce Brosnan - Remington Steele or James Bond? Remington Steele
I once read on a forum that someone said they knew Doris Roberts best as Father Tim's mother on Soap. She was only in a few episodes ? Before Everybody Loves Raymond, I actually first thought of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, but she's done so much, it's hard to choose. I even know her from that St. Elsewhere episode where she played a homeless woman who got gangrene

I didn't know he ever played Popeye Doyle. Why would you go with that one as an alternate and not Jay Pritchett from Modern Family or even as Joe Friday from L.A. Dragnet?

I know him as the criminal on Seinfeld, but I think he will always be best known as Ron Howard's brother. Part of the excitement of watching a Ron Howard movie is trying to find Clint, cause you know he has a bit role somewhere.
He is also known for Gentle Ben
Oddly enough - that's probably his biggest role...and I watched it faithfully....and it still isn't what I remember him for.

Yeah, it's probably (most likely) age related. And it also depends on what part of the world you live in. For example, "Benson" was never aired over here, so I naturally think of René Auberjonois as Odo.
Some younger people though may only know him as "that guy from Boston Legal". I can't seem to remember his character's name.

I think that's how it all went down... anyway i will always remember her for OLTL way before the other two shows...
Actually Baby "Milagro" was Max's & Gabriella's baby-who you are right that they renamed Al. But it later turned out that Tina's baby did survive going over Angel Falls (like Tina did) who was Cord's baby-and he was named C.J.

In fact, the reason I initially started watching Reba was because I recognized him as Miller and I really enjoyed that character so much. He played the perfect idiot!
Mom watched "Another World" for years. So he will always be Sandy Corey to me.
Howard Hessman will always be Dr Johnny Fever to me.

He was Johnny Fever in WKRP so that's the answer. If I remember correctly (it's been a few years) the pilot episode talked about the booger incident....then when Johnny returned to radio at WKRP he made a special point to say "BOOGER!" ;D

I never needed Reading Rainbow. I learned to read when I was 3. I entered Pre-K as the only child able to read. At the age of five and six when I supoose most children watched it, I was reading chapter books. LOL. I've always excelled at reading/writing/language arts. Starting writing at nine and won a school-wide anti-drug writing competition at 12. ;)
Never have been sure what language arts was, but I took it and passed with a B plus.

Even tho I do think of Henry Winkler as the Fonz first I immediately think of this role in juxtapostion to Arthur Fonzarelli
Chuck in Night Shift (directed by Ron Howard)....

Arthur Fonzarelli. :) That's the only role I really knew him in.
he was also the principal in Scream.
and he was in the Waterboy
and he was on Arrested Development.
He's acted a lot over the years just none of the roles as memorable as Fonz.

He was very good in that. I think Michael Keaton's portrayal of Bill totally overshadowed Henry's performance though...but Henry was very good in it....such a change from his "Fonzie" character.
That reminds me I need to watch this film again..it's a good one.

I need to see if it's on dvd... probably not :-\\
I agree Keaton overshadowed Winkler... winkler was so far removed from what Fonzie.. he was surpringly good at doing nerdy and insecure
That reminds me... another movie I love from the early 80s (and we already mentioned the lead.... John Ritter
When I'm not thinking of him as Ted in Buffy I think of him as Captain Avenger aka Steve Nichols in Hero at Large ...
I kinda hated Three's Company and never watched 8 Simple Rules so I have to go with my fave John Ritter roles (third is his role in Sling Blade)

it is on DVD....there's a version with feet (and toe tag) on the cover... I get that it's thematically appropriate but 8-P
I found one that is the old version used..its really cheap.... I hope it's in good shape... I do not want to own foot one! 8-P 8-P 8-P

"Nighshift" is still my favorite Michael Keaton role, but I know it's not his most famous one.

It wasn't that long removed from "Happy Days" and when I saw the film...it was a little surprising for me to see Henry in a nerdy role. I almost wanted to shout at the screen "Snap out of it Fonz, get a spine and put Bill in his place!" ;D
It wasn't until I saw the film a 2nd or 3rd time, when I was able to remove the preconceived notion on "how I expected Henry..or Fonzie to act in that role" ...to actually appreciate his acting talent in that film.

yeah when I said I found one with the old version that's exactly the cover I meant :)
I had that problem the first few minutes the first time I saw the film but after awhile I was able to separate the Chuck from Fonzie... the only real issue I have with the film is the fact that Shelly Long is in it :D
Interesting side note... Henry Winkler was more popular than Michael Keaton in 1982 so Henry has top billing :D

Michael Keaton was pretty unknown before that film, I believe.
Not a fan of Shelly huh? I liked her in the film (she looked good) and I really liked her character in Cheers.

I hear ya. The one with the original cartoon poster is on DVD, but it's in the old Warner Brothers style cardboard case that you had to crack open on the one side. That's the one I got. I did at one point have the foot one because I hate those cardboard cases, but it just creeped me out too much, so i kept the original.
Night Shift is one of my favourite films of the 80s. I often listen to the instrumental version of That's What Friends Are For by Burt Bacharach. I think I will watch that movie now lol

I take it you haven't seen the show in a while lol
She's been a recurring character in the last few seasons as Alan's new girlfriend Lyndsey. In one episode, he accidentally burned down her house
