Subject: Best Australian/New Zealand bands ever
Written By: warped on 08/20/13 at 12:32 pm
What are the best Australian/New Zealand rock and roll or pop bands ever?
My favorite is either INXS or AC/DC.
Here is a list of some of my favorites:
AC/DC
Men at work
INXS
Midnight Oil
Little River Band
Crowded House
Split Enz
Easybeats
I guess some can make a case that The Bee Gees are Australian, since they grew up there.
Who is your favorite Australian/New Zealand band? And what bands would you add to the list?

Good choices there!
Here are 1927. They are best known for the 1989 hit That's When I Think of You which was a one hit wonder in the US, peaking at #100 for 1 week, making it the least successful song to appear in the US Hot 100 during the 1980s. It was also a one hit wonder in Canada where it reached #55. I remember it well!

Here are Noiseworks. Their self-titled debut in 1987 went 3x Platinum in their homeland, sending 5 songs into the Australian chart (the two below reaching the Top 40). It never had any success in North America, but I remember hearing Take Me Back on the radio. I have it on 45 as well as the album on CD. A fantastic album ...

Here are Mental As Anything. They were BIG stars in their homeland, but had no hits in the US Hot 100. They were one hit wonders in Canada during 1982 with Too Many Times (CAN #34) and had one lone Top 40 entry into the UK with Live it Up in 1987 (UK #3). The latter is actually from 1985, but it was re-released as a single for its use in the 1986 film Crocodile Dundee and is one of my absolute favourites. I like it more than Too Many Times

Very good band. My favourite Church track was The Unguarded Moment from my favourite album of theirs: Of Skins and Heart. The version of the Of Skins and Heart album that I have is the North American release that is just billed as a self-titled album and looks like this ...

Midnight Oil had some really cool songs.
They sure did... such as "Beds Are Burning" and "Blue Sky Mine" (the only two which I know).
As for NZ bands, we have the Finn Brothers, Neil and Tim Finn, who have recorded as a duo together as well as with the bands Split Enz and Crowded House. "I Got You" is my favourite Split Enz song; and "Don't Dream It's Over" is my fave from Crowded House, with "Something So Strong" a close second.

Let's not forget Sherbet (or The Sherbs). Not very popular/succesful elsewhere, but massive in Australia.
Another band that springs to mind: Hunters & Collectors.

I, too, forgot about 'em until now. I loved their songs "Electric Blue" and "No Promises."

Divinyls are from Australia. Their lead singer Christina Amphlett recently passed away, but they left behind some great songs. Best known was the 1990 hit I Touch Myself, but I liked them better for the 80s hits Pleasure and Pain and the one I remember quite well: Boys in Town

Ah yes, Sam Sparro... nearly forgot about him. "Black And Gold" was a reasonable hit over here, but I never cared much about it. More recently, Sam had a #1 hit in Belgium with "Happiness":

Indeed they were. I have 3 of their albums. There was more to them than just their cover of Funkytown. My favourite is A Beat For You from 1984

That also reminds me of another great 80s Aussie new wave group that cracked the US Top 40 3 times: Real Life. Best known for the 1983 and 1989 Send Me An Angel, but they also had Catch Me I'm Falling

Computer Games - Mi-Sex
(1979 - NZ #5, AUS #1, US #61 , NL #58)

Computer Games was an international hit for this New Zealand band.
They had five more Top 40 hits in their native country, this being the biggest of them all:

Here's a band that, to my knowledge, made little to no impact outside Australia:
Railroad Gin - A Matter Of Time (album version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y5n_UQw6Zw
Railroad Gin - Come Together
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhUyOtkvNfE
Railroad Gin formed in Brisbane in 1969 and disbanded in 1977, after numerous changes in its line-up.

Yeah, that. Already karma'd the dude for another post, but I owe him one for that. Mi-Sex's 1979 Computer Games was one of my favorites, and I have all but one reference nailed down.

Here's where you come in, random person who stumbled onto this page from a google search. How well do you know your late-70s CDC or other hardware? There's a snippet of BASIC source code that show up a few times in the video that appear to describe some sort of game. I'm trying to figure out what system that was so I can figure out what game that was.
Does anyone recognize a dialect of BASIC from 1980/1979 or earlier, that had both a CLS keyword to clear the screen, an IF/THEN/ELSE construct, an INKEY$ function to read the keyboard, the ability to concatenate two statments on one line separated by a colon and without spaces (e.g. "10000 CLS:GOSUB7600" was legal), and a BASIC program listing for a game that included "WHEN YOU SEE AN ... TO THE LEFT OF..." "YOU NEED NOT PUSH ENTER, JUST THE..." "AND THE NUMBER OF ANDROIDS YOU WISH TO..." The screenshot is taken from what is a (for 1979) pretty high-end green-screen monitor, and the video is known to have been recorded in the old Control Data Corporation's North Sydney building.

Personally, my two favourite Australian bands are Silverchair and Spiderbait. I am more of a fan of Silverchair's earlier work, however, even their later songs are still quite decent. It's hard to believe that the members of Silverchair were only 15 years old, when they released their debut album in 1995. Considering how young they were, they still managed to produce a great album. Here is one of my favourite songs of theirs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2d6iwOSAfQ
Spiderbait have always been pretty big here in Australia, however they have never really been big overseas, which is disappointing. Probably their most well-known song is "Black Betty", which is a cover of a song from the 30s. "Black Betty" was the #2 single in the ARIA charts, back in 2004, and the song even performed well in the US. My favourite Spiderbait song is "Calypso", a song released back in 1996. The music video is pretty weird, but it's a great song in my opinion:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnMmRV8y0xM
Besides Silverchair and Spiderbait, Powderfinger is another really good Australian band. They are another band which has always been really big in Australia, but not so much overseas.

I don't mind Midnight Oil as well. I won't really go into anymore detail about them, because I think most of you know who they are (judging by previous posts). :P

Ratcat
Silverchair
Powderfinger
Calling All Cars
Spiderbait
Here is a great Aussie band from the 00s: Rogue Traders
Here's a bit of trivia for you. The lead singer of Rogue Traders, Natalie Bassingthwaite, grew up in a suburb only 10 minutes away from where I live. :P
