Subject: When did Stephen King become popular?
Written By: 80sfan on 05/27/13 at 2:29 pm
Eh?? I'm starting to read a second Stephen King book. The read half of 1994's Insomnia, which I plan to finish one day.
When did he become popular?

Some might say when the first film adaptation of one of his books came out: Carrie (1976), but I would say when Stanley Kubrick put The Shinning on the BIG screen in 1980

I agree. I think the Shining is what brought him his first taste of fame.

Although I saw "Carrie", I never really heard of Stephen King until "The Shining"

The first time I heard of Stephen King would have to be 1996 or 1997. After that I thought he was scary, but then I was only 7 or 8.

He can still be scary for grown ups. Bag of Bones freaked me right the heck out. And I was 27 when it came out.

I meant that he, himself, as a person and physical person scared me. And yeah his books do the spooky too.

I saw "Carrie" when it opened in the cinemas, read the book shortly afterwards, and read "Salem's Lot" in the late 1970's.
And then came "The Shining"...

I would say it was The Shining for me.
Of course, there are also the Stephen King movies that nobody seems to want to remember.

I love Maximum Overdrive :)
This film is not familiar to me and looking at Release Dates for Maximum Overdrive on IMDB, I notice that it was never released in the UK.

It's time in the theatre was very short, I think the vast majority caught it later on cable or in video.
It was a pretty good (if campy) movie however. Dagnabbit's quote from earlier (Curtis? Are you dead?) is none other then Yeardley Smith, mostly known as the voice of Lisa Simpson, Bart's sister.
It also had a rocking soundtrack by AC-DC.

Thanks, what we call today, "straight to DVD" or was it a TV Movie?

No, it had a theatrical release, it just did not do all that well in the theatre.
It was also going up against some stiff competition. Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, Platoon, Star Trek IV, and Ferris Bueller all came out in the same timeframe.
People (and critics) also were unable to classify it clearly. It was a horror movie, but also incredibly campy. It was to rough for traditional comedy fans, and to silly for most horror fans. However, it did quickly become a cult classic.

Some people like to point out that his novels before his accident in 1999 were better. Of course, opinions are different for everyone.

The latter novels of Stephen King were written in a continual flow mode, starting at the beginning and writing continuously until the end was reach, hence the long paged books. He did not know when to stop. For his book "11.22.63", about the assassination of JFK, it was the first time he research for the book.

The 11/22/63 novel got really good reviews!

Is anybody else watching the 13 part "Series" based on "Under The Dome"?
I did not even realize it was based upon one of his books until after I started watching it. But within 15 minutes, I found myself saying "Wow, this is almost like a Stephen King story!"
Especially with the crazy son and preacher, and the former military guy with a dark secret past.

King's 1974 book Carrie came out 40 years ago, I think April 1974. I think the exact date is April 5, 1974 for Carrie!
40 years is a long time to be publishing. I wonder when he will retire.

2024 is when he will have been published for 50 years. I will be celebrating big time!

He got popular when he published Carrie. I mean, the book was already a hit in the mid 70s. Not to mention that it was made into a very popular 1976 feature film of the mentioned novel.
