^ That's right, Los Lobos covered it in 1987 for the film La Bamba, which was based on Richie Valens' life.

Yeah! And Weird Al parodied that version into "Lasagna". :D

Also, I never knew that Santana's version of "Oye Como Va" was a cover until just a few years ago. I still prefer Santana's version; it is a staple on classic rock stations.

This version, from a movie, is funnier...

In the 1950s, you also had Perez Prado with his well-known version of Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White

In 1982, a British pop band called Modern Romance covered the original vocal version of the song and created what I believe to be in the Top 10 of greatest cover songs ever!  They were not a Spanish group, but kept all the Spanish sounding elements that made that song great no matter who performed it!

Like a promise, you are, you are
Like a summer morning.
Like a smile, you are, you are
That's how, that's how, you are

You are like my hope, you are, you are
Like a fresh rain in my hands
Like a strong breeze, you are, you are
That's how, that's how, you are

You are the source of my water
You are the warmth in my home
You are (You are something like, ohhhh)
Like the fire in my fireplace (something like the fire from my fireplace)
You are (You are something like, ohhhh)
The wheat of my bread (my love, you are something like that ).

Like my poem, you are, you are
Like a guitar in the night,
you are all my horizon, you are
That's how, that's how, you are

You are the source of my water
You are the warmth in my home
You are (You are something like, ohhhh)
Like the fire in my fireplace (something like the fire from my fireplace)
You are (You are something like, ohhhh)
The wheat of my bread (my love, you are something like that ).

You are...

BTW, that is not my translation. Short of ordering a pina colada and asking where the bathroom is, I can't speak Spanish if my life depended on it.

Well, first you order the drink and THEN you ask where the bathroom is.  ;)  (Of course, if they told me where it was, I would have no idea what they were saying.  :-\\ )

I found this song when I was looking for music to use for a slideshow that I put together for one of our many trips to Puerto Rico.

^ There was also a version containing spanish lyrics only (without English language verses by the uncredited female vocalist), but I thought it was kinda boring.

The animated TV series Animaniacs featured a parody of the song, called "Macadamia", in reference to a certain kind of nut.
