We've passed that point already.  We won't reach 12 billion people.  War, famine, and plague are coming for us big time.  As sea levels rise and arable land dries, we'll have more and more people fighting for fewer and fewer resources.  Not pretty.  I don't have kids.

IIRC, it took humanity from the dawn of history to 1800 CE to reach 1 billion people.  We had 2 billion people in 1930.  Four billion in 1975.  Six billion in 2000.  Seven billion today.  And we're scheduled to hit 8 billion in 2025, twelve years from now. 

Some people will point out that "underdeveloped" countries are growing faster.  This should be no solace when you consider a suburban American uses 100 times more energy and raw materials every day than an African farmer.

No need to wait until the 22nd century. The problem has already started and I think by 2050 there will be much more famine and less available resources.  New diseases will pop up or old ones will return.  No need for shades, the future won't be that bright. Something "big" has to happen or some huge change has to occur soon and take us away from this path. Maybe it's already too late  :-\\  hope not.

It is from the 70s, not sure where you could find it.  The ending is brilliant, try not to spoil it.

There were some beardo scientists fretting about this in the seventies.  You know the chattering classes told us?  By 2013, we will have terraformed the moon and people would be buying lunar condos and lunar real estate.  We'll be able to terraform Mars and Venus too!  I mean, we're talking about 2013, like that'll ever happen!
