Subject: Pet Shop Boys: 30th Anniversary

2013 marks the 30th anniversary of Pet Shop Boys, an electronic music duo from London, England.

Consisting of Neil Tennant (right; vocals) and Chris Lowe (left; keyboards), they formed in 1983 and released their 1st single in 1984 titled West End Girls.  It was a club success in several parts of America, but failed to ignite the mainstream, so they went back to the studio, re-recorded it and by 1986, it became a #1 hit around the world.

Neil Tennant also had a helping hand in the success of Electronic, a music duo consisting of Bernard Sumner (New Order) and Johnny Marr (The Smiths).

He sang backup on their 1989 (1991 in North America) hit Getting Away With It and sang lead on their 1992 hit Disappointed; He appears in the video for both songs.

Getting Away With It reached #12 in the UK; #38 in the US and #33 in Canada and was their only appearance in the North American Top 40.  Disappointed was taken from the soundtrack of the 1992 film Cool World; It made #6 in the UK and though it never charted in the North American mainstream, it did reach the Top 10 on the US Dance chart

I remember the earlier release of West End Girls. It got lots of play in clubs. After looking at the above chart, it does surprise me that it only reached #81 on the charts. When it was released the 2nd time, my buddies and I said to each other 'Hey, we heard this, like almost 2 years ago?"  That's how I remember it.

30 years? Wow... :o

Okay, the 'classic years' are long behind them, but there's no denying their superb 'off the wall-ness' at times...

My favourite from them? This...
