Subject: Were the 80s and 90s one of the golden ages of toys?

Written By: 80sfan on 12/29/12 at 10:35 pm

Maybe I'm biased and grew up in the 90s and was a child in the 90s, but were the decades of the 80s and 90s one of the best era for toys?

The golden age of toys were the '50s, '60s & '70s. I'm not saying that because that was the era I grew up in. I'm saying that from a junk buyer/antique seller. We have done quite well selling toys from the '50s, '60s, & '70s. We haven't done too well on the later stuff. Most of the later stuff was made in China-yes, even in the '80s, & '90s.

Some toys we have done quite well on:

-Hot Wheels-especially the Red Lines
-Matchbox
-Dolls
-Soakies

In case anyone is wondering what soakies are, they were/are bottles that held bubble bath in the shape of characters. Some go for boocoo bucks. We sold this one for over $100.

The best toy-actually the best ITEM we EVER sold was a Blythe doll that came out in 1972. We bought her in a lot of dolls that cost us $45 and we sold her for over $1000!  :o :o :o

At the very least AMONG the best. Maybe even the best, but like you said bias can cloud your view.

I wasn't a kid in the 80s, but I think the 80s was a great time for toys.

80s and 90s had great toys but no, I think the toys of the 3rd quarter of the 20th century were better. I mean, BB guns, rock em sock em robots, sound cannons, they had some bad ass toys!

I don't think that there has ever been a universally agreed upon "Golden Age" for toys such as there is for animation (1930's through 1950's) and television (1950's through 1960's).

The only thing that everybody seems to agree on is that toy sales have been on the decline for the last few years due to an ever increasing number of kids preferring newfangled high tech gadgets instead. If that trend keeps up, who knows. In the future people might declare the 1950's through the early 2000's as one long toy Golden Age.

Well I for one, believe the 90s were the best for toys and animation and the 2000s for television so it isn't quite so universal. If "golden age" means "best" rather than just "oldest" those ones are selections.
