Did you ever participate in a marathon dance contest? Was a cash prize going to be awarded to the winners, or was the contest held just for kicks? Was the experience grueling? Did you have to dance while eating, learn to dance while making up for lost sleep, etc.? Did you suffer from exhaustion, digestive troubles, fainting, sleep-deprivation-induced stress (Ie: Hallucinations, paranoia, a general feeling of being "Squirly", etc.), and/ or a medical emergency, like a heart attack or a stroke? Did your partner have to drop out of the race? Did you try to bargain with the MC of the event, in the hopes of receiving EXTRA money, in case you won? Did any of the participants, any of the guests, and/ or the MC of the event try to cheat you, take advantage of you, etc., when you were totally exhausted?

Yes, I DID read They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, and I LOVE both the movie of the same name, AND the song "Dark Blue" by Jack's Mannequin. I would SOOO love to participate in a marathon dance contest, but, due to some medical issues, I know that I'd be unwise to do so.

I'm afraid the only marathons I did were marathon pot smoking, marathon alcohol drinking, marathon porn watching, and marathon not going outdoors for a week.

I participated in a "Dance-a-thon". Not quite a marathon, but dancing from 8pm to 8am (12 hours) for charity. We were given a 5 minute break every hour.  I'm trying to remember the year. I think it was 1983 or 1984.
