Subject: Will the "19" in our birth years make us feel really old in about 40+ years?
Written By: MarkMc1990 on 09/23/12 at 2:15 pm
Think of how historical and old sounding "the nineteen hundreds" sounds when you say that instead of the 20th Century. I can remember being little and being fascinated by the idea that there were people born in the late 1800's who were still alive...it never occurred to me until recently that someday people could look at me that way, being born in 1990. Within a couple decades (maybe sooner than that?) there will be more people/adults on earth born in the 2000s than the 1900s (...right? Does anyone have any idea how to predict when that will happen?)
I can see the articles now..."Chicago Man Celebrates 111th birthday. It's hard to imagine that when he was born, his family did not have a computer and their phone was confined to the house by a cord" ;D

Think about this. Some of the people that enjoy watching American Idol today would be born in 2003.

At least by 2018 they have to get rid of those forms which already have that pre-printed '19__' for your birth year. At least over here in Germany it is still common on a lot of forms that are just for adults.

I actually don't really see forms like that. Not that I find myself filling out forms terribly often, but I feel like it would usually just have four blank spaces for each digit. Or if it's online, there would be a drop-down menu with every birth year. I do genealogy research and I have seen marriage certificates with 188_ or 189_

Yeah, and it stops in 1994 sometimes.

I already feel old already 19 or no. I live in a college town. If you can remember 1987 -- and I was 18 in 1987 -- you can remember before most of the undergrads were even born!

The "19" already makes me feel old, especially when I wasn't even born in the last decade or two of that century. :o
And it's hard to believe that my nephew is already 12 (he was born in '00).

Right now the average age of a human being is about 29.5 years so someone born in 1983 is actually older than half the people alive today! :o Of course this is because places like Africa have a median age in the teenage years, it's not like people born in the early 80's aren't young. ;D
It will take longer than 17 years I think for the median birth year to hit 2000 though, because world population isn't growing as quickly and people are living longer. I would say by the late 2030s half the people alive will be 21st century born.
To answer your question though, I think 19__ are already starting to become antiquated, though for some reason, years before 1990 seem more antiquated than 1990's years which still look pretty normal. I think by the end of this decade when there's very young adults born in 2000 and 2001 that will change though.

I think, at least the first half of the 90's seems 'antiquated' when looking at the 4-digit-number; so anything before 1995. Probably because it's as good as two decades ago.

Yeah seeing a copyright 1992 on something does give the 'holy sh*t that's old' response a bit you are right.

On a semi-related note, I checked a book out from my university's library once for research...well they have the little card attached inside the front cover where they stamp the due date, and the dates went all the way back to 1977 or something. I was amazed. I think the last before me was 1988, and it weirded me out to know that the book had been sitting undisturbed on the shelf for over 20 years. :o

It was also a British 1980s thing. This was a Top 20 hit in the UK, same year as Hardcastle's 19 ...

Trust me, you'll feel "Old" in just a few years, without any kind of visual references. The way things are being digitized now, I doubt there will be many printed forms by that time anyway. Some days I feel quite ancient and I'm really not all that old, (43).

I remember getting excited about having the experience to live in a new century at still a pretty young age. Now I've realized, however, if I had been born 20 years earlier, I don't think I would have felt so old if I had been the same age as the century I was born in.

Release in 1974, but sounds more like a hit from 10 years earlier.

From 1991 but could pass as a late 1970s mellow tune, especially at 2:05 to 2:25.

It seems like with many 2000's babies joining this forum, people born in a year beginning with "19" are slowly starting to become a minority. :P ;D
It's definitely interesting to think about, and I say this as someone who's a 2000's baby myself. Even when I read threads from 2016 on this forum, there were hardly any 2000's babies back then. That would all change a year later. It's weird how much a year or two difference can make. :o

Yeah I have to scroll a bit upwards on online forms these days for the birthdate field. What I don't get is why the default value for the birthday field is 2018, like yeah I was born yesterday.

I've thought about this and being born in 1999, I feel like I'm going to be perceived as old so much faster than people only a couple years younger than me will since I was still born in the 1900's. I don't like that, lol.
Even faster than people a couple years older than me too since their earlier parts of youth had more 19XX people than mine, whereas my youth has been taking place in the same time as a lot of 200X people's youth.

Yeah 1999ers have it the worst because their gonna be seen as old at a younger age than anyone else, meanwhile us 2000ers keep on getting treated like babies even though we're 18 this year >:(

I'd rather have that, haha, but that does seem to be true online at least, you're right. In real life, I'm still kind of treated like a kid even though I'm 19, I guess it's since I'm still a teenager or maybe since I'm still in high school (started late for those who don't know).
I feel like all 18-21 year olds are still kind of treated this way though, at least it's that way in my area.

Yep. Before there was a "Woah you're born in the 2000s? You're a baby!" there was a "Woah you were born in the '90s? You're a baby!" ;D
Also recently on a "Expectant mothers born 1990-1993?" on a pregnancy forum (don't ask me why I was there) I read a post that said "The fact that there could legitimately be people born 1993 on this forum makes me wanna faint" ;D
