Subject: What were your favourite board games when you were growing up?

Written By: warped on 09/05/12 at 2:26 pm

We were fortunate to have many board games which we played often. My favourites were Monopoly, The game of Life, Careers and Clue.

Later on (in my teens) I also liked Scrabble, Risk & played lots of Trivial Pursuit in University.

What were your favourite games?

Do you still play board games now, or is it all on the computer?

I wasn't into playing board games much when I was growing up but there was this one board game I would play it was called Go for Broke. I remember it being similar to Monopoly. Go for Broke was a lot more fun though!

Chutes & Ladders (loved that one when I was a kid)
Scrabble (which I still enjoy today)
UpWords (has a premise similar to scrabble, but you can actually stack the tiles to form new words, and scoring is optional since the tiles don't have numbers on them... I still have it)
Monopoly (to some extent)
Candyland (I actually never owned a copy of this one, but I have played it, at friends' houses and other places)

...and probably some of my past games which I will list later.

Clue
Risk
Parcheesi
Scrabble
Trivial Pursuit
Monopoly

I generally won Trivial Pursuit and lost Clue.  As for Risk and Monopoly, nobody wanted to stay up long enough to finish the game!
:D

I was a BIG fan of the Pac-Man board game.  It was always a pain setting up the board though (as you can see why)

I remember it. I also have seen the "Family Game Night" version in which the competitors have to remove a piece carefully with tweezers and carefully carry it through an obstacle course and drop it on a small board.

Battleship

My son is absolutely in love with this game.

We play board games with our kiddo.  He started out with Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders, but we've moved on to Connect 4, Mouse Trap, Monopoly, Uno, Operation, and Sorry.  Most of these games I played as a kid, but I do want to get him The Game of Life and Aggravation.  I think he'd enjoy them. :)

A lot (if not all) have been mentioned already... though we weren't playing much board games as a family. It would always end up in tears or havoc, and there would always be at least one person not wanting to play (anymore), with pieces flying all over the place. ;D

Yes, we played Monopoly (as a family) - although we generally bended the rules in our favor. ::)
We also played Scrabble. That was fun - until someone would come up with a word that wasn't accepted. Or someone would be left stuck with Q's and X's. Or someone played a word that made it impossible to play any further. Or...well, you get the picture. :D

I remember playing Stratego, Clue (or Cluedo as it's called over here), Scotland Yard, Risk and The Game of Life* with my brothers. Oh, and Trivial Pursuit of course. I would generally be winning, so my brothers weren't very keen on playing after a while. :P

* I'm not sure about the international version, but the Dutch version sucked because you HAD to get married, no matter what.

Yes, you had to get married in the version here too.

Become a doctor, get married, have lots of kids, be happy, make lots of money, become a millionaire!!!

(Isn't everyone's life just like that?)

Mine is. :)

Well, except for the 'get married' part.

...And I'm not a doctor.

Wait - I've no kids either!

And where's my money gone?

But I'm happy.

Not. ;D

That game was very hard you had to be careful not to tweeze or you'll get buzzed.

Yep, the same rule was in effect for the "Family Game Night" version; you had to be careful to not let the tweezers touch the inside of the hole which held the piece.
