Subject: Ben Liebrand

From wikipedia:
"Ben Liebrand (born 27 September 1960 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands) is a dance music DJ. He has produced artists such as Forrest and MC Miker G & DJ Sven and remixed tracks by artists such as Salt N Pepa, Sting, TLC, Fun Fun, Tavares, Bill Withers, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Rick Astley, SWV and Phil Collins. He has also charted on a number of occasions under his own name, one of which being Ben Liebrand's version of "Eve of the War".
His radio show "In The Mix" was the first non-stop mixed show that aired on Dutch National Radio in 1983. Early listeners to that show were Armin van Buuren and Tiësto, who later earned world-fame and have cited Liebrand as their main reason for entering the music business.
"In The Mix" also spawned an annual yearmix with 100+ tracks called "The Grandmix". The first series of Grandmixes aired from 1983 to 1992 and later versions from 1999 on are also released on CD."
Foo Bar thinks it's about time this man got his own thread - and I agree. 8)

I wasn't even aware Liebrand was from the Netherlands. He is a great remixer and producer.
His BIGGEST claim to fame in North America was perhaps his remix of December 1963 (Oh What A Night) by The Four Seasons which sailed into the US and Canadian Top 40 in 1994

His 1984 remix of 'Precious Little Diamond' by Fox the Fox was a BIG club hit in North America

So, did he actually do some of this stuff live? If so, he's even better than I thought. (And can you shed any light on his relationship with DMC remix service? How did those two find each other?)

- Ben Liebrand / DMC / Andrews Sisters, Sing, Sing, Sing (Half Century Dance Mix), from DMC 64-2-8805-2, May 1988.
If that sounds like a decent mashup, it is -- but for those of you who grew up on mashups, check the date on that. If it came out today, it'd be called "Andrews Sisters vs. MARRS / Pump Up The Swing / Swing up the Volume" (which it basically was, because at the time, everyone knew the MARRS track he used as a backbeat, and the swing dancing revival was mostly underground at the time - Jive Bunny's track came out was a year or two after this mix).
tl;dr: Listen to that mix. Ben Liebrand was 15-20 years ahead of his time.

Ah yes, another masterpiece. That reached #16 in The Netherlands.

As far as I know - no, he didn't do any live stuff. All remixes were recorded in his own studio, and broadcasted at a later time.

No idea. :-\\

The first example of his work I came across...on a pleasure cruise to Holland just after Christmas 1985 where I bought the thing for a princely 16 guilder!
Bit of a waste of money and energy, as it became a hit in the UK not long after! ::)

I was going through my massive 45's collection, and had forgotten that I have the 1987 remix of 'You Sexy Thing' by Hot Chocolate. It has a "Made in Canada" printing on the back, so it was released in Canada, but it sadly never charted. I know it did well in Europe though.

OK, so he's a god, not the God. But that's still pretty cool.
I have a tag that implies an airdate of January 24, 1986 for this one.
If you remember an Axel F remix with Eddie Murphy asking "WTF's wrong with this guy", or a version of Axel F with lyrics 0:10-1:10, or a segment where a car honked its horn to the tune of Axel F (3:35-3:45 in the video), this is it.

Take time to find out what you do best,
Give it your all, homeboy, and nothing less,
Find out, homegirls, what you wanna do,
And then go out in the world and make it work for you.
People of the world, both young and old,
We've got a message in our heart that's got to be told.
To help you all learn about the fame and glory,
We'll talk about a man who justifies our story.
His name is Eddie Murphy, started out with a dream,
Of telling jokes on stage and on the movie screen,
Now one mistake can keep you down, but only if you let it,
If you want your dream, you've got to go and get it.
- Harold Faltermeyer (and unknown rapper on vocals -- Hey, Trivia Folks, WHO SANG THAT?), Axel F (Ben Liebrand Mix)
