Subject: Top 5 or 10 or 20 albums you'd take with you on a desert island
Written By: warped on 08/24/12 at 4:02 pm
You've probably done this before...but let's assume you had to spend rest of your life on a desert island, and you are only allowed to take with five or ten (or 20) albums/(CD's) from your massive collection... which ones can't you live without?
And yes. You are allowed to have a CD player on the island. (Maybe some food too...and Gilligan's hammock)

Duran Duran - Rio (1982)
Modern Romance - Trick of the Light (1983)
Pet Shop Boys - Very (1993)
Deacon Blue - Our Town (The Greatest Hits) (1994)
Manic Street Preachers - National Treasures (The Complete Singles) (2011)
Mike Candys - Smile (2012)

eminem Encore (cuz it combines the very best of several albums (plus it's a double disc yet counts as one!)
Journey's greatest hits...because what's more opposite of Eminem than Journey
Janet Number Ones because it's 34 songs of AWESOME!!! Then I'd break the rules and sneak one CD I made myself with the missing Janet songs from several CDs into the package including the songs
Dream Street
Don't Stand Another Chance
her cover of Tonight's the Night
& about 20 other songs I can't name right now.
TLC's OOOOOhhhh on the TLC Tip
TLC's CrazySexyCool
TLC's Fanmail
Now & Forever (which is a best of CD but has a new song on it (with O So krispie in the left eye role :\'( )
Elton John's Greatest Hits 1970 - 2002 (I figure this is a better choice because it's a two disc set that encompasses all the best songs from his greatest hits vol 1-3 which were individual cd's...this is two discs in one container so it counts as one! :P
I'd make another compilation disc of songs I just really love to listen to.... in no particular order:
Raise Your Glass - Pink
F*ck You - Cee Lo
Just the Way You Are - Bruno Mars
Dreams - The Cranberries
Super Woman - Andrea Lewis
I'm Like Oooh - Oh - Andrea Lewis
Some Jewel
Some 80's faves like Our House & Come On Eileen & 99 Red (not Luft) Balloons
oh and Amber Riley's Hell to the No from Glee cuz I freaking love that song.
Finally I'd Compile another cd with
Alicia Keys
Fallin'
A Woman's Worth
No One
Like You'll Never See Me Again
Empire State
Then I'd have to add Jay-Z's Empire State
Then I'd add all the songs that played in the movie Love & Basketball
a Bill Withers Song and an Al Green Song for good measure
And about 4 Boyz II Men songs
New Edition's Hit Me Off & Word to the Mutha
oh and some Usher!
Damn warped this is cruel and unusual Can't I just take my iPod?

1962-1966 ~ The Beatles
1967-1970 ~ The Beatles
Dark side of the moon ~ Pink Floyd
The Stranger ~ Billy Joel
A trick of the tail ~ Genesis

My problem is I don't usually listen to the whole CD. I have some 500 CD's i've only heard one or two songs on. Eminem, Janet, TLC the and any greatest hits CD I own are the only ones i've heard all the way thru.... and that Love and Basketball soundtrack because I love it so!
there are a few other sound tracks i've heard all the way thru too but not many.

DID (Desert Island Discs) used to be a popular article/thread in Tower Records PULSE! magazine, (remember Tower Records?) back in the day...good topic, hard choices though...
My list for now (will change upon my mood and time of day, I assure you).
James Brown - Star Time
The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs
The Cure - Standing On A Beach
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
The Beatles - Abbey Road
Bob Marley - Songs of Freedom
The Doors - Best of (too lazy to name a specific album)
Steel Pulse - Handsworth Revolution
(notice how I kinda cheated as a few of these are multiple disc box sets/albums? Notice how none of the choices go further than the late 90's in time-frame? :-[ It'd be a rare mood or occasion where any artist after say 2000 would make it into the list, and that's saying a lot about how I feel about the current state of music quality.)
Personally, I always thought that 10 DID's was too little if I was stranded on a desert island. I'd want at least 16 hrs of music to get me though at least 2-3 days without repeating an album or music and that would require a list of no less than 20 DID's to suffice.

Sure, just like Penguin quizzes...limit now raised to 20. ;)

9 out of my 10 were before 1980, only the Police are from the 80s, and their last album was 1983. Although I like lots of 80s music, that kinda shows how I feel about the state of music for 20 years.

If you're allowing me to send out for 10 more I'll ask for:
Tarkus and Live at Nassau....ELP
Spartacus...Triumvirat
Please Don't Touch...Steve Hackett
Seconds Out....Genesis
Frank Marino and Mahogony Rush Live
Goats Head Soup...The Rolling Stones
Selection Of Glenn Miller Vol.1
Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years
Ars Longa Vita Brevis...The Nice

One of the best live albums out there. I like it that most of us have varied music interests, almost no 'repeats' in anyone's lists from member to member.
I'll add a few more of mine
Rolling Stones ~ Flowers
Boston ~ (Their first album)
Supertramp ~ Crime of the century
Supertramp ~ Even in the quietest moments
Cyndi Lauper ~ She's so unusual
Police ~ Outlandos D'amour
Beatles ~ Revolver (or Rubber Soul)
Rolling Stones ~ Sticky Fingers
Led Zeppelin ~ Houses of the Holy
Simon and Garfunkel ~ Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
