Subject: Don't "non-old school people" make you feel old more than anything?
Written By: BayAreaNostalgist1981 on 03/20/12 at 5:06 am
You know all the old birthyear discussions around here about what makes you belong to a certain generation? Well I've been thinking there's a way simpler answer. Sure that plays a part too, but I think its far more what you were exposed to/grew up on, and just if you appreciate the past in general. Everybody is different, so it really all depends. Would you guys tend to agree with that?
I've been finding more from different people I've met recently, that "not retro people" are truly the ones who make me feel old. The type who act like any pop culture or world events from before they were 12 is totally unrelatable and so way before their time (I even hate that phrase, it sounds so bratty...especially since the internet makes everything more timeless now) or just don't appreciate retro things.
I was born in 1981 and remember selective things back to '84/85 and I have pretty solid memories by '86. Its tough for me to see how anybody else wouldn't feel that way, but its a matter of perception. I had parents and other adults around me who were into the music and pop culture. I also traveled alot, so I still feel like I got a good taste of the "world of the 80s". I have older relatives, so I feel like that automatically makes me even more retro since I had more history close to me.
So basically (as ironic and weird as this sounds)... a mature 14 year old kid who digs old music/tv shows or say they're born in the wrong generation would make me feel far LESS old than an immature 30 year old who trashed the 80s or who just didn't remember/care about alot of the things I loved as a kid (especially since there are people my age who are like that, like wiggers). ;D
I'm using a total polar opposite example there, but hopefully you guys get what I'm saying.

First off: Welcome back Marty. :)
It's funny that you brought this up, but I was at a friend's poker party this last Saturday and I was talking to one of his neighbor's kids, who was 21 years old. (Since it turned out we were both Nebraska Cornhusker fans, we hit it off immediately.)
My friend had his stereo turned to the local classic rock station and after several hours of playing cards and drinking, I was talking to the kid when this Boston song came on and I asked him, "Is this like grandpa music to you?" And he was like "Hell no, this is awesome!"
Which kind of surprised me at first but then I thought about what I liked when I was 21 and I listened to the oldies station farily often so I guess I could relate.
As far as "not retro people" who make you feel old, screw 'em. Because, after all...

Thanks Al. Its great to be back with a fresh start this time. :)
Yeah, I'd agree with all of this. That dude sounds pretty cool, and it makes sense he'd feel that way. I think rock is more timeless (whereas pop dates pretty quick).
I hope this doesn't sound sexist, but in my experience, more guys tend to be chill and open to older or different things. Don't get me wrong, I've met or seen alot of girls/women who like classic rock and such too, but it seems more common for them to be into mainstream current pop/autotune/rap garbage. Maybe because of the social aspect, especially if they're extroverted.
I feel the same. When I hear about today's kids liking 80s music, it reminds me of growing up with The Beatles, CCR, Stones and old Motown (of course I loved the then current 80s music right along with it too).

Good stuff Fred. :) I've actually noticed today's teens seem to be more old school than alot of people in their 20s! Maybe because they grew up with more hip hop culture.

I guess but i think the fact that old music do presents certain qualities that is absence in current new music....However movie wise, we are still hip so it's cool :p
There is a rise of the 90s flashback pretty soon, music channels are putting a lot more 90s videos these days

Yeah, I think movies are more timeless in a way (all genres will always be around to an extent), and almost everyone loves new technology anyway, so being hip on that makes sense.
Hmm I have mixed feelings on 90s nostalgia. They had a lingering presence for many years and I don't think they started feeling distant until about 2006 and not really until the last few years (basically from FB, YouTube and other social networking). They're long enough back now (especially 91-95) to be retro, and there's alot of things I miss from those days. But I don't want the 80s nostalgia to fade off. ;)
I think almost any previous era can stay retro cool in a sense now though, especially with YT and all. I mean The Beatles will probably always be eternally cool.

I don't think the 80s flashback would fade anytime soon, its still in popular demand ;) but I would say it will in 10 years time at least... when the 90s kinda take over :p

I recognize this, although I'm female. I think it's quite irritating, sometimes. :-\\

I'm actually quite feminist and not typically "guylike" in many respects (I guess that's just one of the few ways I am lol), but I still hope that didn't come off offensive or anything. :)
Yeah, just like anything else, the ones who are like that give a bad name to ones who aren't. Many women aren't at all like that either (like yourself), but it doesn't go the other way much.
Like I can't imagine a guy being a fan of Gym Class Heroes, Bieber, One Direction, or "Super Bass". ;D When a certain segment of girls do, there's where I feel so old and out of place at the same time.

i also think that, the 1980s were uncool during several years(1992/3-2005) the same time lasted the 1990ness

I'm a straight guy and I like a lot of pop music and mainstream music and stuff. I too am kinda feminine. But I also like some of the old stuff too. Some rock songs are awesome to listen to (Other than metal. I hate that) I don't think it makes a huge difference it's all just stereotype. It's just music. Everyone should listen to what they enjoy without being stereotyped. There are a lot of gender stereotypes that play out in the world. But for some reason, music always seemed to be a confusing one for me. I just never got why different types of music had to belong to the two genders and why people thought that way. It sounds different but it's all still music so why should there be gender stereotypes to different genres? A good song is a good song no matter what gender you are, right?

Isn't rap always been stereotypically aimed at males rather than females? I always found the media aiming rap music to men all the time and never women. :-\\

in short... you can totally tell music quality by their gender specification
good music is that everyone of every gender of every whatever can relate to in short

Yeah, there's always stuff that goes outside the stereotypes. I personally like music from all around too, I'd get bored only listening to one genre or one era. I like a few Britney, GaGa and Katy songs just as a catchy guilty pleasure. There's definitely nothing wrong with that... I guess it just annoys me a little when some people only like what's mainstream and current and won't give anything else a chance.
I hope I didn't come across as offensive, I guess I was just saying it in a "more often than not" way. Generally more guys are chill and open minded with liking music beyond the Tep 40, but in fairness, lots of girls do too. :)
Oh I agree the more gangsta "thug" rap was always geared more toward dudes. I'm more talking about the modern autotune poppy rap like Super Bass. I can't imagine anyone over 15 and/or a guy liking that (or anyone with taste). ;D
