Subject: Dr. Demento

Written By: CatwomanofV on 02/16/12 at 9:00 am

I don't know if there was ever a thread started about the infamous Dr. Demento.

I started listening to Dr. D. WAY back in the early '70s.  :o :o :o  As a teen, I think I taught every kid in the neighborhood the songs "Hello Mudda, Hello Fadder" & "Shaving Cream".  I have almost a year of entire shows recorded from about 1991. I was a PROUD member of the "Demento Society" for about 10 years or so and  I have the first 10 "Basement Tapes."

I know there are other Dr. Demento fans out there. What are some of your favorites Dr. D. songs? Dr. D. stories? etc. etc.

I don't know much of Demento as I never listened to his shows, but I do know of two songs that were featured on his shows that were popular here in Canada ...

Exude - Boys Just Want to Have Sex

"Vanna, Pick Me a Letter" made it on the pop charts here in the states. Everyone thought it was Cheech-but of course it wasn't. I think it was one of the few parodies that WASN'T Weird Al that made it on the charts.

Strangely enough, I'd never heard of Dr. Demento until I was in the Army stationed in Germany 20 years ago and the Armed Forces Network would rebroadcast his show late at night (I forget if it was Friday or Saturday nights).

I can remember him playing these two songs from the 1950's:

A co-worker and I were discussing Dr. Demento today, we were trying to remember when he aired.
I believe it was 6:00 PM on WIOQ in Philadelphia but I am getting conflicting memories from others.
I do know he was on Sunday nights followed by The King Biscuit Flower Hour, oh how we lived for
Sunday nights.

Fish puns figured prominently on last week's Family Guy.  I wonder if they predate Kip Addotta's 1986 track?  (The Addotta track was my introduction to the whole fish-puns-as-a-running-gag thing.)

By the way, in addition to running a streaming radio show, Dr. Demento still gives public appearances.  Our thread missed it by a month!

And now for something completely different:

I remember the following two lines:

"Yeah, choosing what's best is hard to tell, so here's a list of everything we sell.
Well, we've got Cheetos, Fritos, Doritos, Ho-Hos..."
(the list continues for a long time, listing dozens of junk food / snack foods in an accelerating tempo.)

My memory of the voice is that the singer sounded like Shel Silverstein, but I can't place the name of the track.  I'm pretty damn sure it's not Larry Groce's Junk Food Junkie.

And that's all I remember until I wake up tomorrow and start rummaging through buckets of ancient cassette tapes.  Do those lines ring a bell to anyone out there?

More than a decade before there was nerdcore, there was nerdcore:

En-en-en-en-en-en-en-engineer!

My name is Steve, and I'm here to say,
That I'm an engineer, that's what I do all day.
My name is Nick, I like to analyze,
I can solve any problem, any size.
They call me Joe, the software man,
I write code like no one can.
And I'm Rick my friends, I program too,
At a hundred bucks a line I'll write one for you.

Chorus:
We all calculate and do design,
Test that box and deliver it on time.

Say "Oh"! ("Oh!")
Say "Plot that graph!" ("Plot that graph!")

I get up each day at 7 o'clock,
Put on my leisure suit, it's time to rock!
I go downstairs, and grab some food,
Then I'm out the door, I'm one bad dude.
We get get to work and into our stalls,
Make some coffee, make a few calls.

(guitar break)

Pick up my assignment from the pile,
Then place it in the circular file.
Ah, donuts today!  What's the deal?
It's a customer review and our free meal!
We say "Mmm Mmm good" - they say "Mmm Mmm good."
We say "Ooh ooh ooh ooh - Yeah yeah yeah!"

Sit right down and go through my mail,
Try to make my way down the paper trail,
Then on to a meeting in the conference room,
Catch some winks and wake up at noon.

Chorus:
We all calculate and do design,
Test that box and deliver it on time.

Say "Oh yeah"! ("Oh yeah!")
Say "Makin' my way down the paper trail,"
("Makin' my way down paper trail, a paper trail a paper trail, I make my way...")

Back fron lunch, too tired to think,
Too much to eat, and too much to drink.
Chattin' in the hallway, leaning on the walls,
Look, there's an auditor, comin' down the hall!

(whispered to backdrop of "Jaws" theme)
"auditor!"

That is the man that we all fear,
Now is the time to disappear!
For a place to  hide, the lab is the best,
Just in time for acceptance test.
Tweak the knob, turn the dial.
Hit return and wait for a while,
Now do it again at hot and cold.
Shake your thing and paint it gold!

I present to you, for all to see,
"The XYZ serial number 3!"
It meets its specs, its under cost.
Please take this thing and then get lost!

It's 5:15 and time to go,
But there's one more thing to do before we blow,
You see, the time card audit is here to stay.
Forget to write your hours and you get no pay.
I like to improvise and go with the flow,
But you know this song is under change control!

Cal-cal-cal-cal-calculate!
We all calculate and do design,
Break that box and blame it on the other guy!

Say "Logic is dear", ("Logic is dear!")
Say "It's very clear, ("It's very clear")
So pass that beer! ("Pass that beer")
(in harmony) 'Cos I'm an engineer!

Cal-cal-cal-cal-calculate!
Engineer...
(repeat/fade)

  - Run GMC, Engineer's Rap, which first aired January 8, 1989.  You're just going to have to trust me on those lyrics, or transcribe it from your own off-the-air recording!

My family and I went to see a Dr. Demento show at Caltech in Pasadena in February of 1997. Demento himself performed some pieces, including a round of "Shaving Cream" (which was hilarious)...and even showed some videos of novelty music (such as "Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun", "Kinko the Clown", and "Fish Heads", among others). It wasn't until intermission that I noticed Weird Al was in the audience, in the row of seats across from me! I didn't meet him, though; that was okay with me. Mainly because there was a long line of people waiting to meet him, and possibly get an autograph. Al later performed on stage.

In later years, I was able to listen to the Demento show on the radio... although it wasn't every week.

This song totally reminds me of high school. I hung out at a greasy spoon/arcade place and they had this song on their jukebox. I can't tell you how many quarters I spent listening to this song.  :D ;D ;D ;D

-Weird Al
-Christine Lavin
-Tim Cavenaugh
-The Toyes (I have their first 2 albums-LOVE the first one.)

He introduced the Capital Steps to me and I have seen them preform several times. He also introduced me to They Might Be Giants.

Any others?

Keep in mind they were laughing at him, not with him, but it didn't stop even his supporters from enjoying it.  In the interests of bipartisanship, there actually were some pro-Reagan songs on Demento's show.  Demento was resolutely apolitical; if it was a clever, cute, funny or whimsical novelty record, it got aired no matter who's ox got gored.  Although I can't find the audio, I was able to scrabble up some lyrics, and it'd be awesome of these made their way to the Mad Music Archive.

The Ronnie Reagan Rag, day and night,
Lean to the left ("No!"), Lean to the right ("Whew!")
Let's hope his popularity is lasting,
He got his cabinet from Central Casting!

Ronnie Reagan Rag, to and fro,
See him on the Late Late Show!
I know you're proud of him, but try not to brag,
Do the Ronnie Reagan Rag!

We're counting on him to deflate inflation,
He never got an Oscar nomination,
We finally have a leader who can act,
Though many critics would dispute that fact.
He won the race that no one thought he could,
Now Uncle Sam is going Hollywood,
He had the Presidency in the bag,
Do the Ronnie Reagan Rag!

Give him the simple life, no, nothing fancy,
Two ordinary people, Ron and Nancy,
Hip Hip Hooray and rally 'round the flag!
Do the Ronnie Reagan Rag!

Nixon was tricky, Gerald Ford was a klutz,
Carter was sweet but he didn't have any guts,
It was time for somebody new,
Let's see what Ronnie can do!

The Ronnie Reagan Rag, day and night,
Lean to the left ("No!"), Lean to the right ("Whew!")
Give him the simple life, no, nothing fancy,
Two ordinary people, Ron and Nancy...

The Ronnie Reagan Rag, to and fro,
See him on the Late Late Show!
He used to be the president of SAG,
Those movie reruns could become a drag,
His son likes ballet but he's not a f-raidtotalkaboutit!
Do the Ronnie Reagan Rag!

- Dale Gonyea, The Ronnie Reagan Rag, first aired November 8, 1981, recently remixed by the National Cynical Network.

Sure I listened to this. I think it was on Sunday nights where we lived.  Shaving Cream, Fish Heads..great tunes.
And all the Weird Al we heard. One of the first ones was "Another one rides the bus".

I listened almost every Sunday night.
