I've liked the band since my childhood.  They had their first big hits in 1978 -- Just What I Needed, My Best Friend's Girl, and Let the Good Times Roll.  These songs got significantly more play on Boston rock stations, so they seemed like much bigger hits to us. 
The band never failed to impress right through the slick synth pop of their biggest-selling album, "Heart Break City" (1984).  The follow-up "Door to Door" flopped, selling only gold, not multiplatinum like there others. 

The Cars drove off the scene for a quarter of a century.  I was surprised to see them return, especially after the death of Benjamin Orr in 2000. 

They were on Stephen Colbert on August 9, 2011.  Awesome performance, though I kept looking at Ric Ocasek and then at Greg Hawkes and back, and couldn't help thinking:
They're giving a whole new meaning to eighties music!

the cars are a fantastic band. i've always had a bit of the same dilemma about them that i've had about blondie, because they felt sorta like they were really satirical somehow, but i wasn't sure if it was deliberate and they were making some sort of comment about pop music and the somewhat degraded state of culture in general in the 80s or if they were just talented musicians doing good music and then smiling and nodding when they got the reviews in rolling stone saying they had a message. the other band in that register for me, the police, kinda over-reached and played their hand because they had open pretensions to art, but i could never quite make out in my mind whether the cars and blondie had a similar deeper project going on or whether they were just good rock bands that got lucky. with blondie i'm pretty sure it's the former; with the cars, i still wonder.

i was in a cover band for a couple years and we did "just what i needed" pretty regularly. a lotta fun. for a pop band they get some volume, at least the way we did it.

this is my cars song from recent days. i think it was the only tune from this album that wasn't a top 5 hit. but it might have been a top 5 hit and i just don't remember.

and yeah, i'm with KT, that new tune is mince. it's like their old sound but trimmed a bit around the edges.

Still not in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Their day will come. They certainly deserve to be there.

I love The Cars, but when they do "Drive" in today's times, it just does not sound the same without Ben Orr :(

I like the new album, but the structure of the universe imposes a hard limit of six months for that image in any thread about The Cars, and I can't take any chances.
