Subject: Timeless Songs

There are songs that seem to span decades. Like THIS one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d22CiKMPpaY
Also Blue Moon. This is one of my favorite rendition of it:

I think this one is timeless.

At one time, Guinness World Records cited "Yesterday" with the most cover versions of any song ever written. The song remains popular today with more than 1,600 recorded cover versions.

Yup. Very timeless-like many Beatles songs.

I have never heard this song before, CatwomanofV. It's nice.
I know (on some other boards/websites) people have a problem with Elton John because he's gay ( I think they are idiots if they do), but this is Your Song, a timeless song. One of the most wonderful songs ever written, IMO.
When a song is great, like this one. Does it matter whether he's gay or nor? Left handed or right? Wears glasses or not?. Black or White or Asian? It doesn't matter. If the song is great, regardless of who sings it, just listen to it and enjoy.

I surely hope I have not offended anyone. I'm mouthy at times.

Summertime is from Porgy & Bess. (And please, call me Cat.)
As for Sir Elton, I have a great respect for him. (It was funny because when he first became popular in the '70s, I didn't like him but he grew on me. ) When you get to know me better (like many people here on these boards), you will learn that to me it is a matter of WHO you are and not WHAT you are that matters. And yes Your Song is timeless.

Hi Cat. Thanks for your support. I have always liked Elton John. Sandwiched between the Beatles owning the 60s, and MJ owning the 80s, there was Elton who IMO owned the 70s. But there is a lot a dislike out there for Elton because of (sheesh) . That is so sad.

I figured Charlie Daniels would be debated but to me timeless song just means a song that spans generations and for that it fits the criteria. Well that
and the fact that when my 6 year old granddaughter walks in singing, " I told you once you son of a b*tch I'm the best that's ever been." I think for
that it is a timeless song, either that or she is really arrogant. ;D

Speaking of What A Wonderful World, another Timeless great is 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' by Judy Garland. I put both those together because in 2001, the great Sir Cliff Richard had a BIG hit in his homeland with a cover of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' that was done as a medley of 'What A Wonderful World' and it was FANTASTIC. My favourite version of both songs ...

OK!OK!OK! This is so cool. Sig and I went to a wedding when we had just made our relationship "official". A couple of us were standing up beside the table after just having left the dance floor and this song came on and a trussed up hen who made in quietly know she didn't approve of the relationship(it's a color thing) thought she was one step better than the rest of us remarked that this was one of those songs that she couldn't her husband to dance to, just as she said that Sig, who has probably never danced in his life, ever, got up and and made his way around the table and said "may I have this dance". Her jaw hit the floor as she watched us walk over to the dance floor. Can you say "Jerry Maguire moment" It was perfect all the way around. It is also the last time he has ever danced. :)

i think you had to be an old like me, who was around when it was radio rotation and hadn't yet been totally played to death unlike any other song before or since. it was a radio song, and it was cool to hear it when you were out and about (or, in my case, when your mom was driving you out and about) and you'd associate it with different things that happened or that you saw in your life. it was also neat because it had so many different moods in it. but you kinda had to have it forced into your life by the radio to learn to like it, i think. and then because it was such a good radio song, of course they played it 24/7 for 20 years and it became utterly ruined.

There was a radio station I used to listen to in Conn. (Can't remember the call letters). When one DJ would sign off at 10 minutes to midnight every night, he would ALWAYS play Stairway to Heaven. So, I would ALWAYS make sure I was listening at 10 minutes to midnight just so I could hear it.

Hi Tia, I was around when Stairway to heaven was playing. I'm old enough (sigh) I found the 2nd part too loud, long and I changed the dial, usually 1/2 way so I didn't have to hear the 2nd part. The song never did anything for me. I prefer other Led Zeppelin songs. I never dared say anything in high school, the song was popular/hot/saintly amongst my school mates.

about the loud part: i think that's not uncommon. (i'm kinda louder-the-better, so i actually got restless in the beginning bits sometimes.) i recall someone at one point trotted out a pop-format friendly remix that was like 3-minutes and change with the loud part removed. it never took off, but it definitely shows you weren't alone in not digging the heavy bit.

Firstly, I thank Cat to start this "campfire chat", where we can talk, sing and listen to songs still alive though the ages and forever. Mainly for a foreigner like me who might not to have picked all those hits up beyond his little country's borderline.
Louis was timeless himself, furthermore, I add, boundless as many songs along this thread.
Those tunes which came from films, kept stuck in our brains, from the fact of watching the plot as song goes along.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, with its rain drops keep falling on my head, caught up with me at first hit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VILWkqlQLWk
Songs we sing along as feelings remind from our soul. Sinatra, Bennett and suchlike love songs minstrels. Several of them I love their way to sing but I hate the way and suspiciuos manner they behaved. So I got you under my skin is a song I saw Homer singing from inside Burns' body, and boys it was...hilarious and nice. To abound on it I link "something stupid" with subtitles is Spanish, why not?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEiU1TxonJs
As to me, the very best timeless songs are those of liberty, convictions and hopes.
Stairway to heaven linked by Tia, was in the air all the time in an ex-socialist country, Bulgary, by the nineties, when I happened to be there, just when people begun to breathe in liberty.
In this line I add Changes of wind, from Scorpions
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KcRl1p2waM
I now bite one my favours about human beings, space, time convictions and beliefs...All we do is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hzv0TSSDgU
The string of timeless songs is endless as well, so I hope all of you and I never die, and draw some song-bead every now and then.
I guess I'm a sailor with fortune, being inthe00s, so I leave this one as a sort of parody of my own
but then again it's more true than mockery of me what it's said.

It is true that in this time and age most of us only do low average, so we need some solidarity to cope with people who bought the world by paying off worthless credits and some false notes.

Just mother nature on the run, sad and hard to see.
Now I wonder who the chosen ones should be.

Music can heal a hurting soul, these melodies bring us remembrances of a better chances on past lifetimes.
So your sweet song linked me to the cold north, where some of you probably, just like me, creepy crawl.

Sweet sweet memories brought to me,
thanks King Tut,
though your ancient Egypt mustn't be, by now, much fun with this sad tug of war
Actually the whole world is on a tug of war, so I would like to add this one

Not only is Sweet Caroline a timeless classic but I also believe it's the closest thing America has to a drinking song.
Don't believe me? Try belting it out on a karaoke machine in a crowded bar on a Friday or Saturday night, I can almost guarantee that if you're good enough you'll have at least one or two tables full of drunk women singing along with you by the end. :D

A man who had more talent and charisma and personality in his left ear than most of the new artists combined had over the last 25 years.
Imagine of John were still here. Just imagine...
