Subject: Shortest-lasting fads you've ever seen
Written By: Mat1991 on 03/03/11 at 7:49 pm
What are some fads you remember that didn't last very long?
I remember, in late 2008, when denim waistcoats were real popular with women. I don't see those anymore, though.
I also remember sequin being very popular amongst young ladies when I was in junior high in the mid '00s.

Wearing a headband across the forehead instead of in your hair popped up in 2007 (60's revival?) and sort of faded out before December of that year.

That was in style when I was in junior high, circa 2004 - 2006.

Yeah that was in style in the NBA maybe from 2001-2006/2007 I think too.

Back in the seventies there was the lucky rabbit's foot key chain.
Then there was the Eddie Rabbitt's foot key chain. Boy, that one didn't last long! Phew!

One of the shortest fads I have seen over the years must be the skinhead haircut.

The shortest fad I've ever seen was the Tecktonik fad. The fad was extremely popular in France (it may still be, I don't know I don't live in Europe) but it somehow made its way to Canada and exploded in popularity here in Canada from late 2008- to mid 2009 then it just faded away. We even had a Tecktonik dance battle at our school -.- so ridiculous...
I remember there being a Korean exchange student in our school during the fad. She must have thought it was the way Canadians danced :P

A Dutch hype called jumpstyle, spring/summer 2007. About half of the Dutch population was dancing the same way at the time, on the same dumb dance beats.
Two big hits in this genre:

After a couple of month, there was a even jumpstyle version of our national anthem. :-\\

Another real low; the man in this video was a famous Dutch politician. At this moment, the hype was almost ending already.

The hype lasted about 4, 5 months...
------------------------------------------------------------
And 10 years earlier, there was a hype of making happy hardcore versions of Dutch children songs, completed with VERY stupid video clips. Also lasting at the most a half year. The first three videos are from the biggest act in this genre, called 'Hakkuhbar'.
And I can tell you, almost all these video clips were shown VERY much at our own version of MTV, called TMF. ::)

One music trend that lasted 15 minutes in the late 90's(late1997/early 1998) I think: that "Swing Music Trend" with acts like the "Cherry Poppin Daddies" I think and "Brian Setzer Orchestra".

The Retal, Rap/Metal, fad of the late 1990s early 2000s was obnoxious and tiresome. In fact I actually hated it. :P

I would say back in the 80's when guys wanted to dress as Michael Jackson and women wanted to dress as Madonna.

Christian Audigier croaking made me remember his clothing.
For about a semester his Von Dutch crap took OVER my high school. Everyone I knew was wearing it or some form of knock off of it. Especially the trucker cap. I even wore the trucker cap with a sweat suit. Why the hell did my mama let me out the door in that mess?
The Ed Hardy happened. I have an Ed Hardy shirt. >:( 80 dollars for a shirt. I don't recall wearing it.

Harlem Shake was pretty short lived, it began around January 2013 and faded into obscurity sometime that following summer.

I pretty much didn't like the Harlem Shake that much when it was popular. I think people stopped making videos about it after 2013, not on the summer of 2013.

Scoubidous were popular in the UK in mid 2005, but seemed to be gone by the end of the year.

That was probably 1983-1984. I don't think even in 1987 when Madonna and Michael Jackson were still popular people wanted to dress like them anymore.

I think the fad died down after the late 80's.

Off the top of my head...
Swing revival - 1998
Dubstep - 2011
Electro swing - 2013
All of these were great ideas and had great potential to really change music but for one reason or another died out very quickly.

But it doesn't make it any less obnoxious. :P
