Subject: Your favorite songs from musicals or movies
Written By: Henk on 02/05/11 at 7:37 am
Maybe it's been done before, but if so the old thread is probably buried deep in the archives. And I don't feel like digging.
So...what are your favorite songs/tunes from any old musical or movie? ???
...and by that I mean original scores. ::) So no such thing as "Oh I liked Unchained Melody in Ghost!"...
Here's a few from me to get you started (hopefully).

Excellent choice. 8) A song so famous you'd almost forget it comes from a musical.

I got lots of faves, but I will start with a trio of obscure ones: THE UNCHARTED ...
GET READY BOY - SHOOTING STAR
(from the 1984 motion picture 'Up the Creek')
This was never released as a single, but it should have been
It probably would have given the band the Top 40 hit they never had
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS2l94cbRFY
NOWHERE FAST - FIRE INC
(from the 1984 motion picture 'Streets of Fire')
This was released as a single, but never charted.
It was written/produced by Jim Steinman
so naturally Meatloaf did a version, his peaked at #67 in the UK in 1984
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8knq1RLWEgo
IF I TURN YOU AWAY - VIKKI MOSS
(from the 1985 motion picture 'St. Elmo's Fire')
Canadian singer; Canadian song (written/produced by David Foster)
This was released as a single, but it never charted.
It still got massive radio play in Canada, so you'd never know it wasn't a hit

The unmistakable sound of Jim Steinman. It's easy to picture Meatloaf singing this song.
Sadly, the singer sounds like a cross between Ellen Foley and Bonnie Tyler. Had it been either one of them singing the original version it might have faired better.

Fire Inc was a band that was pieced together specifically for songs from the film. The singer's name was Laurie Sargent, who at the time was the lead singer for a band called Face to Face, who had a US Top 40 hit in 1984 called '10-9-8'. In the film, the band who portrays Ellen Aim's Attackers are the remaining members of Face to Face.
The soundtrack to 'Streets of Fire' was the first CD I ever bought, as I loved the movie so much and fell in love with the film's closing song (before the credits), titled 'Tonight is What it Means to Be Young', also performed by Fire Inc. This one found some success, reaching #80 on the US Hot 100. It still had that same Jim Steinman sound, and even had one of the catchiest synth solos of the 80s (at increment 2:54 in the video; the version heard on the actual soundtrack/single was a bit longer)

However, the big money maker from the movie 'Streets of Fire' was this beloved classic ...
