Subject: Local/regional nicknames for portable toilets

While generically they're referred to as "porta-potties" (at least here in the Midwest, as far as I know of), it seems that sometimes portable toilets are referred to by the name of the local company that provides and services them.

This weekend I was up in Bismarck, North Dakota for a family reunion, and a cousin took me and a few relatives out on his boat on the Missouri River. After a couple of hours he docked his boat so we could take a restroom break, and as I was stepping off the boat I asked him where the restroom was. "Oh, there's a Spiffy Biff right over there," and gestured towards a portable toilet on top of a hill. I took about 2 steps in that direction but then stopped and turned back at my cousin and said, "Spiffy Biff???" "Sure, that's what they're called here," he replied. Sure enough, as I approached it there was a logo on the side that said "Spiffy Biff's." I thought that was pretty funny.

Here in Kansas City the local porta-potty company is called "Johnny-On-The-Spot," so people around here refer to them as "Johnny-On-The-Spots."

I just know there's gotta be a lot of wonderful, goofy local and regional nicknames for porta-potties around the country.

"Spiffy Biff" is pretty hard to beat though.  ;D

I worked for one of those companies for about 6 years, I used to do all the routing for the drivers.  ;D

I have seen Johnny On The Spot near Reno, but not here in the Bay Area.

I've mostly heard them called crappers, portolets, and of course, porta potties.

Some years back there was a court case involving the Tonight Show and a portable toilet company using the exclamation "Heeeere's Johnny!," which was emblazoned on the doors.

Surprisingly, the defendants lost.  They didn't sue Stanley Kubrick!

We call them Porta-loo's over here. Going to the 'loo' might have come from our English ancestry.  :-\\

We had a company called "Jon's Jons" and I *think* it was located in Flushing, Ohio (yes that's the name of the town) as I recall.

I am not aware of a name here that we use other then porta-potty.

Whatever they're called. Don't ever use them at the Circus. I think they also let some of the animals use them!!  8-P

Eh, we call them the sheeshhouse or the office. More commonly called "spiveys" around here, that's the main company that rents them.

Chelsea Clinton's Wedding -- $15,000 Porta-Potties

7/27/2010 12:45 AM PDT by TMZ Staff

Unlike everyone else on the planet, Chelsea Clinton's wedding guests won't need gas masks
to do their business in a porta-potty because Bill's daughter is renting the swankiest outhouses in town.

The portable latrines have actual porcelain toilets that flush,
stereo music and hot running water -- oh yeah, and they're HUGE.

We're told Chelsea's getting between 4-6 trailers for the big day
with a total cost of about $15,000.

For some reason, it just doesn't feel right when the walls aren't blue.

Not very environmentally-correct.  You want the biodegradable version with the naughty word on it.

Yes, that's a real product.  And it's designed for a real use: a portable, disposable, biodegradable toilet that takes up no space until it's actually needed.  Actually a pretty clever idea.
