Subject: Best Cover Songs Ever
Written By: whistledog on 11/26/09 at 6:36 pm
Been done before, but what the hell. Open for new discussion :)
One of my all-time favourites is the 2007 hit 'Sexual Healing' by Alibi vs. Rockefeller. When it first came out, I listened to it for a few times before I even clued in that it was a cover. They took a Marvin Gaye classic and made it their own and I loved it ...
On an off-topic note, the video for it is still my choice for best music video ever. I used to have clips from it as my Avatar. I may bring that back!

--------------------------------
What do you get when you cross Stevie Nicks with Footloose? My choice for greatest cover song ever! 'Stand Back' by Linus Loves featuring Sam Obernik was a 2003 cover of the 1983 hit by Stevie Nicks. They added a dance beat to keep with the now, but still kept true to that 80s sound the original had. The music video was said to be inspired by the end dance sequence of 'Footloose', but to me, it seems more general of any 80s movie that had a high school dance scene (Teen Wolf, Once Bitten, etc ...)
Ironically, the original by Stevie never charted in the UK. This version made UK #31.

And now from the world of rock. Remember the Theme from M*A*S*H? Did you know it had lyrics? The actual title of the song is 'Suicide is Painless (Theme From M*A*S*H)' and in 1992, Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers did a wicked awesome version that ended up becoming their first UK Top 10 hit.

One of my favorite cover songs is Twist and Shout by the Beatles. That songs really rocks. Beatles had to record the song at the end of their sessions coz it would wreck John's voice after singing that song.
I also like Preludes Accapella version of "After the Goldrush" (Neil Young), although I also like Neil's version.

Those are great ones.
Speaking of 70's Canadian covers, I also vote for 'This Flight Tonight' by Nazareth (original by Joni Mitchell) and the somewhat forgotten 'This is Your Song' by Don Goodwin (original by Paul Anka)

Hey, I just listened to "This is your song" by Don Goodwin not 10 minutes ago on my computer. Didn't know Paul Anka wrote it.

.
He wrote it, produced it, and pretty much made Don Goodwin the name that be became, which sadly wasn't a big one as he was apparently only popular in Canada despite not being Canadian

Embedding is disabled for that video, and when I clicked on the link to watch it through YouTube, I get a message saying pop-ups were blocked. Even YouTube doesn't want you talking about Debbie Gibson ;D
Seriously though, that is not a bad version of that. I grew up listening to Debbie Gibson, so all jokes aside, I can appreciate her music.

So, do you prefer Leila K in 1993, or Tears in 2003?
Or someone else's cover of Ca Plane Pour Moi? The original, by Plastic Bertrand, goes back to 1977, so it's not like you have a shortage (no really, there are 17 covers out there!) of covers from which to choose.
Trivia tidbit: Elton Motello's Jet Boy, Jet Girl is exactly the same song, and even appears on Plastic Bertrand's album, but the lyrics - in English - have nothing to do with any of the French lyrics to Ca Plane Pour Moi, even allowing for translation.
For artistic merit, I'll give the nod to Leila K by a nose because they managed to nail the same level of manic synthcore intensity some ten years ahead of Tears. And both of 'em got everything right that Kim Wilde got wrong when she attacked Steppenwolf.

Jennifer Hudson's version of And I Am Telling You is pretty frickin' amazing...

The Joe Cocker version seems to be the one that gets the most recognition, mostly due in part to 'The Wonder Years'
There was also a great late 80s version by the Scottish group Wet Wet Wet that was recorded as a charity single.

Here's one by comparison. The classic 80s hit 'Listen to the Radio' by Pukka Orchestra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lpj5cB_uQ0
For those of you who remember the 1983 original by Tom Robinson, you know it was more in a ballad style (it reached #39 in the UK chart). This 1984 cover by Pukka Orchestra had a heavier danceable beat and reached #19 in Canada. I like both versions, but I lean more towards Pukka Orchestra as I never used to know it was a cover song until the early 00s when I picked up a copy of Robinson's Greatest Hits.

Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman" is one of my all-time favorites, and while Googling it I happened upon this gem by a band called Optiganally Yours.
Now, normally I don't like it when bands dick around with the classics, but this cover is so wonderfully goofy and has such an irresistible groove that you just can't help but love it. ;D

I really like Marshall Crenshaw's version of Someday, Someway, which was originally done by Robert Gordon.

And also Tear Stained Letter, which was covered by Jo-el Sonnier, and originally done by Richard Thompson.

The two later, sang the song together, on TV awhile back.
