Subject: Albums where the only good songs are the hits?
Written By: Marty McFly on 12/09/08 at 2:29 pm
Are there any albums you can think of where the only good songs are the popular ones, and the album tracks are generally just kinda throwaways? Here's some offhand:
Janet Jackson - Control
Huey Lewis - Sports (the Hank Williams cover is boring, which is too bad since the other songs are so fun. I think there were 6 hits)
Tears For Fears - Songs from the Big Chair
Paula - Forever Your Girl (well "State of Attraction" and One or the Other" are decent but nothing compared to the popular ones)
Third Eye Blind - self titled from 1997
Amy Grant - Heart in Motion
Van Halen - 1984
Michael Jackson - Bad

'Born In The USA' - Bruce Springsteen
...which had near-enough all its tracks lifted as singles! And even some of those bordered on tedious!
Would have made a fantastic EP...

That's funny, I think "No Surrender" is a really good song (catchy, feelgood and really evokes the rebellious teen spirit of the '50s/60s) and I don't THINK it was a hit. I agree though, some of the others songs I didn't think were any big deal.

Pearl Jam's non-single tracks have always really bored me.

I’m just going to comment on your selections Marty…
Janet Jackson – Control
Kinda agree, though most of the album was singles anyway. “You Can Be Mine” was alright.
Amy Grant – Heart In Motion
Disagree. “Ask Me” and “Gallileo” are pop gems!
Paula - Forever Your Girl
Disagree. “Next To You” and “One Or The Other” were great tracks.
Michael Jackson – Bad
There were only 2 songs that weren’t singles! I’d agree with “Speed Demon” being naff, but “Just Good Friends” was fine.

Van Halen - 1984
Only one in the list I've listened to in it's entirety...
The hit singles are the worst tracks on this album, IMO, though not their best effort in general...
Can't stand "Panama", "Hot for Teacher", "Jump", "I'll Wait". "Top Jimmy" rocks, "Drop Dead Legs" rocks and "House of Pain" is the best...

Ah gotcha, yeah I'm coming onto it from a totally different place than you are. I'm not much into Van Halen, but I'm a pop fan so that's why I like "Jump" - it's so catchy and it's basically synthpop which just happens to be performed by a hard rock band.
