Subject: Dancing in movies

Written By: bookmistress4ever on 09/02/08 at 2:55 pm

What's your favorite dance scenes in movies?  (I thought I would even-out the testosterone of the war and car chase and freak-out movie threads by adding a "girly" dance theme one.  ;) ;D  :P )

I love dancing (well...let's just say I love WATCHING dancing, as I have no rhythm or coordination to speak of) so dance scenes happen to be one of my favorite... genres? of movie scenes.

P. S. The whole movie doesn't have to be a dance movie to qualify, and even the dance itself doesn't have to be all that good, but if it is an integrel part of the movie or has a "wow" factor, add it to the list.

Some of my favorite dance scenes (please forgive me because there are so many), I can't really pick a favorite...
I'll try to catagorize them..

Dances by "everyday schlubs (not trained professional dancers)", these are done especially well in my opinion...

Kat's Love Scene:Can I Keep You? From Casper The Movie. (1995)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpSf_Yc68_A

Back to the Future - Earth Angel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynP4EDjPmXk

Karate Kid - Daniel and Kumiko Rock Around the Clock  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GeLYlZP4VE

A Soft Place to Fall from "The Horse Whisperer"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jzIL85SbrA

Professional dancers (or at least they had some training)

It's a Wonderful Life - It's the Charleston  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mH65nTLpS4

"Let's face the music and dance" from Follow the Fleet (Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMuKRbJa3O8

David Bowie - As the world falls down - from Labyrinth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt2zoY45508

A Knight's Tale - Golden Years (David Bowie) - Heath Ledger http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlPpFPxti5Q

Another Fred Astaire classic - This time from "Royal Wedding" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac6o8PXthzQ

Gene Kelly - Singing in the Rain  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkEvy-9yVyQ

and I reserve a special catagory for my favorite dance, The Tango

Scent of a woman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWfKRZYAJ34

Take The Lead Tango Scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEwZIufmafo

On an island with you - Cyd Charisse and Ricardo Montalban http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_E0k0pr5sA

I'm sure there are others that have slipped my mind, people have been dancing in film since there *was* film to dance in.  I admit that I love it all.  :-[

I also liked the "Good Morning" scene in Singing in the Rain.

That was great!  There are still so many Shirley Temples movies I haven't seen yet.  They make a great pair!  So talented.

The Mask is one of those movies that I never did get around to watching.  That was cool.
It reminded me of another favorite dance scene.

♦ Footloose (1984) - The closing dance sequence

That scene above inspired the music video for the awesome 2003 hit 'Stand Back' by Linis Loves featuring Sam Obernik

David Bowie - As the world falls down - from Labyrinth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt2zoY45508

When I was younger, I desperately wanted to be Jennifer Connelly in that scene.  Actually, now that I think about it, I still do. http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/07/naughty.gif

Hmmm....only two come to mind right now.

Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart dancing to (I think) "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" in the movie "Casablanca".

Well, I was going to try and focus on only one or two scenes in this movie, but I just recommend the whole darned thing: "Shall We Dansu?"  I'm talking about the original movie from Japan, not the spectacularly crappy remake starring J. Ho and Richard Gere.  Just see the whole thing.  It is funny, sad, and just brilliant.

-Singing in the Rain - all of them but the Gene Kelly one is just so classic and I can watch it again and again. Hell, I could watch any dancing by Gene Kelly in any of his movies.
-Dirty Dancing (of course)
-Flashdance
-Staying Alive-the only part of the movie I love-the last 15 minutes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9sTxEuuyVU  (This is only part of it. I couldn't find a video with the entire dance  :\'( :\'( )

-Oklahoma-the dream sequence.

I have a few that I like:

The opening sequence of "Breakin"

"Fame" during "Fame"

"Hot Lunch" in "Fame"

Final Sequence in "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" (Movie with Sarah Jessica Parker)

And for some reason, I've always loved the Bazarr dance during "Gone with thd Wind" where Rhett and Scarlett waltz together. It was SO romantic.

I thought it was going to be this dance scene

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVrWDPi12zE&feature=related

but I realize now that was in the first breakin' movie.  Aw, I just realized you can see the string in one of the broom shots. That's disappointing.

I loved the Fame and Breakin' movies even though they were cheesy as all get out.  I so wanted to go to the School for the performing arts, but you have to have some kind of talent to get in there (not to mention that I'm sure you'd  have some sort of tuition to pay, which was not gonna happen with my parents.)

I so loved the dancing and singing in Oliver - Who will buy?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBby9s9ztns
and since I always manage to dance the Polka at every family wedding reception (betcha didn't know that about me, did ya?  ;D ), Oom-Pah-Pah, is also a favorite from that movie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQjtMJ14gzc
and I'd do anything from the same movie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFd6YLKVjek

I liked the choreography from Mary Poppins - Step in line (but the song got on my freakin' nerves after awhile)  lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu23HHmOG48

I thought it was free but exclusive due to that whole  talent thing.

Don't know really.  Could have been, wouldn't have made a difference to a small-town girl in rural Ohio that can barely carry a tune in a bucket.  ;D

So you would've played the role of Julie Miller (Lori Singer)? She was from a small mid-west town taking in the big city for the first time and barely made it through "It's Gonna Be a Long Night"....oh yeah but I'm guessing you don't play the cello.  ;D

Hey did anyone post this clip

Fame: Red Light I love that chick  ;D

She forgot the cape to her super hero costume.... I think I just found my halloween costume!  ;D Gotta go practice my dance moves.

Yeah, that would be me (minus the cello and stick-thin body)  ;D  Have you ever noticed that many of our conversations end up talking about Fame?  That's ok though, it's so awesome to find somebody that remembers the show.  :)

Yes, this is a good one. In fact, any dance scene with Fred Astaire and/or Ginger Rogers is a classic. Those two were great.
