NEW YORK - The beginning of the end for a financier on the run came when he reached out to his sister-in-law. She then called her mother, who in turn called a man she had grown to trust at the U.S. Marshals Service.
...
Israel disappeared June 9, the day he was to report to prison. His SUV was found abandoned on a bridge over the Hudson River in a New York City suburb with the words "Suicide is Painless" — the theme song for the "M A S H" television show — scrawled in dust on the hood.
Authorities scoured the river for a body and quickly determined that the suicide was a ruse — that Israel fled in his white recreational vehicle with a scooter and his belongings. He was thought to be staying at RV parks, campgrounds or highway rest areas. Authorities also arrested Israel's girlfriend on charges that she helped her lover elude the government.***
...
Frank Dawson, a U.S. Marshals Service spokesman in Boston, said Israel "knew they were getting close to him, so he probably did the right thing."
Israel's RV was found in Granville, Mass., officials said. He had planned to surrender there, but the town's part-time police department was closed, so he rode a motor scooter to nearby Southwick to turn himself in, authorities said.

here's a fun one, illustrating the use of an assault scooter in solving crimes.
***
http://www.universalmartialartscenter.com/spirit1ness.htm
When a fleeing suspect hopped on the back of Juan Davis' scooter to get out of town, he didn't know his ride would actually take him back to the police.
Davis, 32, who owns Universal Martial Arts Center in Silver Spring, helped police stop a suspect June 10 while Davis was riding his scooter down Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, promoting a community after-school program. He first offered the man a ride and then overpowered him after a scuffle that ensued when the suspect figured out that Davis wasn't driving a getaway scooter after all.
Davis, who also owns a martial arts studio in the District, said he saw a red car speeding behind him with police following it late in the afternoon, in the direction of his martial arts studio. He followed the cars out of concern for the children who might be near the building.
The suspect had run a stop sign near the Silver Spring Metro station and a Metro Transit officer had attempted to stop him, said Steven Taubenkibel, a spokesman for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.
The suspect attempted to go around the officer and hit his car, and a car chase ensued. During that chase, Davis crossed their path.
Davis said he saw the man hit a parked car, get out and run down Spring Street. Police couldn't chase him because of the traffic. But Davis, on his scooter, could ride around the cars.
"I'm a martial arts instructor. It looked like an easy catch for me," the black-belt said. "I said, 'Hey, I think I can get that guy if you want me to."
Police gave Davis the go-ahead, and Davis rode after the man on his bike.
When he caught up to him, Davis said, "I said, 'Hey, you need a ride?'"
The man jumped on the scooter and Davis drove away. The man wanted him to drive toward the Beltway; Davis, however, drove toward the police station and the man began to realize his escape wasn't going to be too easy.
The men began to fight and the scooter got knocked over, cutting and burning Davis' leg. He warned the man he was a black-belt, then "I did a few martial arts moves," he said.

Scooters..... :P, I'll stick to my Harley. ;)
In all seriousness, A friend of mine just came back from the Carribbean and he said scooters were everywhere,
they were even used as a taxi. On my commute to work I see more and more scooters. I guess it saves money
on gas but some of the riders just look ridiculous decked out in leather that matches the color of the scooter.

i just got a t-shirt that says "scooter trash." turns out... riding a scooter? fine. having a t-shirt that says "Scooter trash"? well, less fine, but also fine. but doing both at the same time actually feels a bit silly.
i have a scooter but it's not a 49cc scooter, it has a 125cc engine so it can go up to around 60 mph and with the small frame it has quite a lot of pickup. plus it only cost a little more than three grand whereas a new motorcycle seems to cost about as much as a car. it has a little more maneuverability and you have a lot more flexibility in terms of where you can park/lock it. i think scooters are cool, although they certainly dont have the cool factor of a proper hog and i think i'd be frustrated riding a 49cc scooter. they sound like lawnmowers. that said, once ive gotten all the mileage out of the vino that i can i might get a motorcycle next.

Scooter Mileage Picks Up With Latest Gas And Electric Scooters
Electric Scooters
We've been writing about all kinds of scooters for years, but because of high oil prices, they're now seeing a renaissance of sorts. With 30% of Americans saying they would consider riding a scooter--even some people we wouldn't expect to--and sales of scooters up by 200% (and that was as of two years ago), now seems like a perfect time to revisit some of our past scooter coverage and bring it all together. Following are our favorite electric scooters, including production models and concepts:
Vectrix Electric Scooter
First, an electric scooter that leaves a lot of other forms of transportation in the dust: the Vectrix Electric Scooter. Powered by a 125-volt Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery pack that you can recharge in a couple of hours, it can accelerate from zero to 50 mph (80 kph) in 6.8 seconds, with a max speed of 60 mph (100 kph) and a range of about 68 miles (110 km) at an average of 25 mph (40 kph). The 2008 North American MSRP for a Vectrix Electric Scooter is $9,395.

the wheelie one is quite funny, as is the one where they're drinking and scootering in the woods. totally irresponsible scooter ownership! but it's fun to watch.

good news! i got an affirmative nod from a harley rider this morning. we scooter riders are very sensitive about the whole scooter-vs.-hog issue, even we riders of souped-up badass scooters like me, so we love when a motorcycle rider shows appreciation for a nice scoot.
bad news! some tailgating chowderhead slammed on her brakes in front of me and i guess i turned my head for a second because first thing i knew i was right on her ass and had to slam on my brakes too and the vino fell over. it's okay and i'm okay, though i took a pretty good bang to my left side and i need to get the rear brake serviced now, but the real screwed up thing is, i picked up my scoot and walked it off the road, to a burger king parking lot, as it happens, and there were like a dozen dudes sitting in the parking lot, day laborers or soemthing? i wasn't sure, and they saw me trying to walk it off, checking my ride and all that, i'd just seen my life flash and i knew it and they knew it, and nobody came over or said anything or nothing. i'd had an accident in the middle of the road, could have died, and they sat there staring like zombies. once i got the vino up and running again i went over and asked them what was up with that, but they just kinda shrugged their shoulders. it reminds me of that thing a couple weeks ago with the 70-year-old guy who got run over and people just stood there and looked at him.
so, here's the thing. human beings? totally fudgeed up. no compassion, no empathy, no nothing. whoever's reading this, when it comes your time to have something screwed happen to you, you'd better have family or friends, because your random fellow man or woman? they don't give a flying fudge about you. they'll stand there and watch you die, even if by lifting a single finger they could save you, and then they'll talk later about how you deserved it. this species fudgeing sucks, and we're going extinct, and to tell you the truth, we deserve it. if we can't give a hand up to the people sitting right next to us, we got it coming. and i think i'm as bad as anybody, honestly. i walk past the homeless and dont give them a dime, most of the time. i remember once in high school i was driving and i saw this cat walking down the road and he was bleeding from the head, obviously dazed, right down the middle of the road! in traffic! and everybody just drove around him. i did too. i felt ashamed later but i didn't do anything when it counted.
so whatever. rant over, sorry. i'm royally pissed today, at myself more than anyone. but i'm pissed at you too, whoever the fudge you are.

ah, the importance of the comma. we editors compile examples of missing commas leading to tragic misunderstandings but i think i'll leave this one off my list.
i meant, of course, "yeah, okay, dick." i actually revised from "ashcroft" because i thought that wording might be a little strong. i ride, therefore i'm too chill for hurtful epithets.

"Once symbols of freedom and escape, motorcycles now have a far more practical allure: fuel efficiency. Also, motorcycles are easier to park and are exempt from HOV restrictions in many jurisdictions. As a result, more are being used for commuting to work, and many of those commuters are riding scooters. New sales of scooters have jumped from 12,000 a year in 1997 to 157,000 last year, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council."

aw man, you know after you oil-chuggin' fools are done destroying modern civilization with your hummers and your escalades, we're gonna come charging in and use our kymcos to do donuts on your misshapen freakish capitalist heads. and then we're gonna institute full-on communism! once people start permitting scooters, the collectivist utopia isn't far behind.
scoot on, komrades!

Not if you're still fiddling with the straps on your poorly made pre-Brezhnev gas masks 'Komrade'. What you eco-weenies fail to realize is that once we use up all the oil we're going to power our escalades and Hummers with pure malice towards the environment.
