Subject: Similar sounding songs
Written By: whistledog on 04/21/08 at 11:28 pm
I am sure a topic like this already exists, but I figure why not start a new fresh one. Ever heard a song that sounds strangely like another song? Perhaps a song that legally samples another song right? What if that wasn't the case? Here's a few that I've stumbled upon ...

I know we've done this before...but that thread is probably buried way down now, and I'm pretty sure I contributed to it.
For example, I think the chorus of Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved" sounds so much like the bridge of Cheap Trick's "The Flame."

Well, both of 'em came out in 1986, so... maybe they had the same sort of idea with their intro's.
I think the beginning of the first song sounds similar to Whitesnake's "Is This Love", which came out a year later.

Listen to them both.. very eerie in similarity.. especially since they both have a female singer responding to the male from the beginning at about approximately the same time in in the song (around 90 seconds into BOTH songs)

"I wanna see the rainbow high in the sky,
I wanna see you and me, on a bird, flyin' away,
Then I hope to see your smile every night and day."
- Chorus from DJ Paul Estak - Rainbow in the Sky
"I wanna see the sunshine after the rain
I wanna see bluebirds flying over the mountains again
Where is the silver lining shining at the rainbow's end?"
- Chorus (and entire lyrics) from Berri / New Atlantic - Sunshine after the Rain
In true Eurodance tradition, the songs came out within months of each other in 1995. The melodies are identical. The lyrics paint pretty much the same picture, here was also a verse to the Estak track that makes it even more clear that "pretty much the same picture" wasn't close enough.
"I wanna make lo-o-o-ove-to you, (and hey, if the lyrics don't scan, so what? It's techno! Let the singer...)
Lead you to-oo-oo tomorrow, (...just carry the word over three or four syllables, and then it scans just fine!)
I wanna feel the sunshine after rain"
- verse from DJ Paul Estak - Rainbow in the Sky
To this day, I have no idea which was the original track and which was the copy.

This is actually something my Dad has noticed and talked to me about last night. The guitar riff in Boston's "More Than A Feeling" and this song by Australian band, Hunters and Collectors. While the songs themselves aren't similar sounding, take a closer listen to the guitar riffs and the structure of both songs.

I was listening to The Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob La Da" this morning and it made me realise how similar the melody of the song is to The Offspring's, "Why Don't You Get a Job?". I've never picked up on it before, to be honest. Whilst the songs themselves sound nothing alike, listen to how similar the melodies are.

^Obviously the Beatles song was first; Offspring probably didn't realize what they were doing when they wrote their song. In fact, according to Wiki, "Get a Job" attracted attention for its close similarity to "Ob-la-di", and this was even pointed out by many music writers.

I've thought that the intro to "Shape Of You" by Ed Sheeran (2017) sounds rhythmically similar to that of "Cheap Thrills" by Sia (2016).
From "samethattune.com":
The intro to Ed Sheeran's Shape of You (released January 6, 2017) is very similar to the intro to Sia's Cheap Thrills (released February 11, 2016). Both feature a marimba-sounding synth playing staccato quarter note triplets for each chord. In terms of chord structure, Shape of You (in the key of E) follows a vi-ii-IV-V (or minor 6, minor 2, 4, 5) progression, while Cheap Thrills (in the key of A) follows a vi-IV-I-V (or minor 6, 4, 1, 5) progression.

Lindsey Buckingham kind of ripped off the Rolling Stones "Torn & Frayed" from the classic "Exile On Main Street" album (1972) for his song "Steal Your Heart Away" from Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Will" album (2003). He even takes the title from a lyric in "Torn & Frayed", "just as long is the guitar plays/ let it steal your heart away". How blatant! He also sings his song in a Stones-ish accent.

Here is an album track from 2000 titled I'll Never Fall In Love Again by German group Modern Talking. Next to it is the world famous 1981 hit Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) by Christopher Cross. Yeah, you hear it lol

Here's one that I just realized now. Can't believe I never noticed this one before. To be fair, the melody of Dilemma is based on a Patti Labelle song that pre-dates The New Hollywood Squares, but the way it's presented in Dilemma sounds very much like HSQ
