Subject: Clerks (1994)...
Written By: Davester on 01/27/08 at 5:35 am
I've always had a great affinity for Clerks. I loved the idea of it - it helped that at the time I was that age and working retail (video rental at the Warehouse), as well. The dialogue, the characters, the non-plot plot, everything about it was fantastic for what it was- an independent film made from desperation and dreams...
Second only to Slacker by Rick Linklatter (a brother from another mother...)
Favorite character - Randal...

One of my favorite films, even though it took me nine times to actually see it. (I checked out at the video store I worked at eight times and never had the time to pop it in to the VCR).
I've worked at a 7-11, a music/record/video store and various other retail outlets in my life and this movie spoke to me. Randal and the others that hung around the store are all too real. ::)
The movie and the characters are so familiar to anyone that has had the misfortune to labor at these go-nowhere/pay-nothing jobs, that they have to strike a funny chord and laugh at the situation.
Its still amazing to think that all of Kevin Smiths films have the same real "no bulls*it" tone to them. As if the people are not only real, but you KNOW them and the completely odd situations they get into... 8)

Cinema Verite and the working class hero/anti-hero.
There is truth in the grit. There is some spoof and exaggeration as well, but this serves to accentuate the things clerks in run-down convenience stores encounter, eg. emotionally disturbed and obsessive compulsive customers or the roster of ridiculously raunchy porno titles.
"Clerks" was a surprise hit, which got Kevin Smith bigger budgets. He continues to be a decent filmmaker, but he'll never recaputure the world of "Clerks."

I really loved that movie, everyone wanted to be a filmmaker after seeing it 'cause it looked so easy to do and everyone knew a Dante,a Randall, a Veronica 37 :D
It changed movie making forever...all you need is a camera and good dialogue.
Unfortunately Smith's later work never really got there, but i'm still a fan of him i loved Chasing Amy too, just wished he didn't make some really awful stuff like Jersey Girl 8-P or try to redo Clerks, wtf was Clerks 2? :o

I'm checking out Mallrats this weekend. Hope it's as good...
That dialogue is on the money and oh-so-quoteable. With a movie about nothing in particular it had better be! I've read mostly good reviews on Clerks 2 but I'm iffy about watching it...
"Every time I kiss you I'm going to taste 36 other guys..!" :D

One of the coolest things about my brief ride in retail is that I kept running into people I went to high school with, most in various states of sobriety. Lemme see...a guy named Doug who I hung around with in school spent most of the evening walking around in circles through the aisles of VHS tapes looking for "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". I kept telling him, over and over, our only copy was rented out...
When ya gotta have it, ya gotta have it... :-\\
