You knew it was cheap if it said "Serve Before Friday".

And one for the lads...Watneys Party 4 or 7...
Either four or seven pints of the cruddiest beer sold in a tin resembling a depth charge...
Extremely popular at 70s parties, the fun began in getting the dam' tin open...
Yet for all that, the lemonade propbably had more alcohol content! :P

Actually these would fit into the “Bum Wine” category of alcoholic beverages. Calling them cheap “wines” is probably and insult to the word “cheap”.

Check out “http://www.bumwine.com/” for some background on these wonderful drinks of the under funded.
In the 90’s it was Cisco and Boones, hardly "wines" by any stretch of the imagination. mostly sugar water with high and cheap alcohol content. In the early 90's Cisco was banned in many inner cities. It was labled as "liquid crack". and rightly so. Anyone dumb enough to drink this stuff straight was "cracked" in the head after drinking it.
Nowadays many “cheap” wines are found at your local drugstore or discount store.

Cheapskate Wines :D http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl;jsessionid=ac112b801f4390b4b20c75ed47dd8131f0f86584975e.e3eTaxiPc3mTe3mNbhmTchmNaO1ynknvrkLOlQzNp65In0?c=428631&sc=2&category=4
And then there’s always “Two Buck Chuck” Charles Shaw from Trader Joe's.
Actually not too bad for the price, you can do worse and pay more. ;)

As '80s alcohol icons go, Bartles and James were second only to Spuds McKenzie. (Yes, Spuds, the little dog; they were marketing beer to 13-year-olds. "Anheiser-Busch does not condone underaged alcohol consumption and donates big bucks to Just Say No programs." No, you were marketing beer to the 13-year-olds. That's that. Anyway, I'm off topic. This is about cheap wine, not cheap beer!)

One of the best wine coolers here in SC back in the 80s besides Bartles&James was Matilda Bay. As far as wine coolers go they were the BEST.

I remember this:
http://www.tac-net.ne.jp/~nuvo/franzia.jpg
Franzia, a.k.a, "Box O' Wine".
And its modern-day sibling, ca. 2000-present day:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5FG9Q1HaRWA/TnJIRcZFdvI/AAAAAAAAAeY/6YDN8FADlXc/s800/two-buck-chuck.jpghttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rsXUtnpJ6FM/Sdz2NRfwjZI/AAAAAAAAAbo/rav6mrSe-6M/s320/two_buck_chuck_front2.jpg
Bronco Wines' Two Buck Chuck, and yes, Bronco is owned by none other than Fred Franzia. If it's been a good year and there's a glut of grapes from other growers on the market, even the "good" grapes get thrown into the pot, and you can wind up with a surprisingly decent wine for two bucks.
