Does anyone remember the very first rock album they purchased? Mine was Double Vision back in '78
I played it over and over on the turn table but never got sick of it. I still have it too!

I remember the first 3 rock albums I bought, after that it gets fuzzy; and yes, I still have them.
All 3 wre bought between 1974 and 1975.

1st...Led Zeppelin II

2nd...Foghat...Energized

3rd...Foghat...Fool For The City

Well, my parents bought alot of albums (which were almost unofficially "mine" in a way too, since that was what I've always liked), so that might not count. The first rock songs I remember were probably "Every Breath You Take", Foreigner's "I Wanna Know What Love is" or any Huey Lewis (although that stuff is more pop-oriented).

I didn't buy music myself until 1993 or '94ish, but a few of my first ones were The Cars' Heartbeat City, John Cougar Mellencamp's American Fool, and Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet. I also got all of Weird Al's albums up till that point, as well as lots of '80s compilation tapes (didn't buy CDs until the late '90s).

I think the first real "rock" album (if you can call Blondie rock, i'm really not sure what exactly the definition of rock is. are they more "pop"? but what exactly does "pop" mean?) was Blondie: Greatest Hits in 2004 or 05.

Of course Blondie counts!  Good choice for a first, if I may say so.  Pop, as in "popular music" is a fluid marketing term.  The lines are pretty fuzzy.  I distinguish jazz, classical, ethnic, and "art music" from "pop."  This insinuates a value judgment that "pop" is less "serious" than "serious" forms of music.  It's not necessarily so.

If 10 million record-buying Americans shared my tastes, then John Cage would be "pop" because his music would make the "pop" charts.  Circularl logic.

"Rock" is the designation I don't like because music that happens to be marketed as "pop" gets categorized "rock," when it most certainly is not, eg. Laurie Anderson, Dead Can Dance.
