Subject: Do you have any songs that just seemed like they came directly from your heart?
Written By: bookmistress4ever on 10/05/07 at 2:12 am
Weird topic, I know, but I've a few songs that I've heard that just seemed like whoever wrote them, was listening to my heart when they wrote them. Do you have any?
Mine (at least a few of them anyways):
Iris - Goo Goo Dolls
Slide - Goo Goo Dolls
Then you can tell me goodbye - The Casinos
Drive - Incubus
You do something to me - Paul Weller
In my life - The Beatles
Golden Slumbers - The Beatles
Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
Baby can I hold you -Tracy Chapman
Drowning in your eyes - Ephraim Lewis
I Know You By Heart - Bette Midler

There is that one line from Bohemian Rhapsody that sums up my personal feelings about my life.
Mama, I don't want to die but sometimes I wish I'd never been born at all
Then there's Forever Young by Alphaville
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
And for some reason... I have re-written the line to All By Myself.
The lyrics go All by myself/Don't wanna be all by myself anymore.
In my head I always hear it All by myself/I wanna be all by myself forever more
Breakaway is pretty close
When I am having a bad day I will pop in Eminem's My Dad's Gone Crazy. There is nothing specific in the song that I identify but there is section of it where he riffs this stream of curse words that when I rap with it releases all of my anger and frustration. Its very cathartic.

There are some lines in some Smiths songs that I can relate to.
Like
Shyness is nice, and
Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
You'd like to
from the song Ask. My social anxiety keeps me from doing alot.
And the lyrics to Asleep.
Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed
Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go
Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore
Sing to me
Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go
There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well ...
Bye bye
Bye bye
Bye ...
Because I've wanted to commit suicide, because I thought there would be a "better world", or atleast I'd be happier dead. and also because I'd want the people in my life to know that I want to be dead.
And also a line about being too shy to get a job, from a song I can never rememeber.

Please don't do anything crazy like that. If you go you'll cut down on many of the interesting posts on this msg board. The only thing left would be just more posts from the spiteful+liberal crowd. And then I'll have to kill myself!

So many Sufjan Steven's and Elliott Smith songs. Too many to list.
One that I just realized hit me so much is Death Cab For Cutie's "Your Heart Is An Empty Room". I'm not sure if the lyrics mean what I think they mean, but I don't want to find out, if they aren't. That song stays on repeat for quite some time.

When I was a quasi-suicidal youth I had some sobbing jags listening to that song. There was a bleak eight months at the nadir of it all when my family was afraid it was not a question of if but when. And I just wanted to say:
"Don't feel bad for me,
I want you to know,
Deep in the cell of my heart,
I shall feel so glad to go...."

"Stacy's Mom" ;D
Seriously though, I'll have to think about it for a bit because I know there's alot that I've connected with in some sense. Offhand, I can go with Paula Abdul's "Opposites Attract" (people who can get along and have fun, despite differences) and Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" (nostalgia of growing up and looking back on it still as a pretty young guy).

One I have mentioned a zillion times before ... 'Close My Eyes' by Paul Janz
There are lots of songs that I remember and still love from my youth, but for some reason, this one in particular stands out. Whenever I listen to it, I am reminded of the great days of my youth in the 80s when I was without a problem in the world and the times were so much more fun and simpler. For these reasons, and also that it's a very catchy ballad, it still remains my most favourite song ever! :)

Was gonna go for variety, but I think I'm gonna punt -- and throw out a triple shot of Sisters here:
Sisters of Mercy - More (for when I'm feeling gleefully greedy)
Sisters of Mercy - Temple of Love, This Corrosion (OK, I went through an emo phase too)
Sisters of Mercy - Dominion / Mother Russia (saved for last -- hard to combine generic angst with a Cold War description of everything that was wrong with the USSR)
"We serve an old man in a dry season
A lighthouse keeper in the desert sun
Dreamers of sleeprs and white treason
We dream of rain and the history of the gun
There's a lighthouse in the middle of Prussia
A White House in Red Square
I'm living in films for the sake of Russia
A kino runner for the DDR
And the 52 daughters of the Revolution
Turn the gold to chrome
Gift - nothing to lose -
Stuck inside of Memphis with a mobile home, sing,
Mother Russia, Mother Russia,
Mother Russia, rain down, down, down..."
To this day I'm surprised at the number of literary and cultural references the Sisters were able to pack into every song they wrote. Been listening to them on and off for 20+ years (Ironic, about the same length of time it took for us to become the USSR, just as they predicted) and I still wouldn't have gotten half of 'em without help from the Intarwebs.

Heh. Andrew came close with Vision Thing, but in missing the mark by 20 years, he also missed the mark by three orders of magnitude. It's a billion points of light, and a trillion-dollar vision thing. I gotta admit, whatever the MF'er may or may not have cost, that's a pretty good return on investment.
Which reminds me - I owe you karma. For the looks on the kids' faces when they figure out what "Joy Division" really refers to. Eldrich came close with bleakness, but Ian still wins on band naming. (Why link to it? Make 'em google it themselves. All the more horrifying when nobody knows what links they'll wind up finding.)
