So, anyone here like classic country music? For some reason I have been craving to listen to it lately. I love Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. What are some of your favorites? I need some more ideas of good songs to download. :)

I like a few songs here and there. In a way, I think it had more appeal then because it was more of its own genre.
Would you consider '80s stuff like "Angel of the Morning" or Restless Heart as "classic"? I like those alot. I guess anything before the two '90s commercializations (with Garth Brooks and later Shania Twain and the like) could count. Like 1940s-1991.
Or is this like the really classic stuff like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, etc? If so, believe it or not, I even dig that stuff a little bit sometimes.

I myself generally don't consider 90s Country to be "classic" on the basis that during the decade the genre *overall* became way too Pop-ish. (Of course, I suppose one day people will look back on that era with fondness - I do like some of the new-style songs here and there)

You know, after I wrote the above post, I was thinking about when the point was that Country technically "went pop" and I realized that it always had some parallels with the pop and rock worlds for years. Lots of 1970s "Southern Rock" was country in a way (i.e. Lynyrd Skynard), and bands like The Eagles and John Cougar Mellencamp arguably fit into that image too, even if they're not country per se.
But yeah, I agree with you, the "new pop country" of 1992+ isn't really classic.

Ever listen to John Stewart. His album "Lonesome Picker Rides Again" is good. On that album is the original "Daydream Believer", he wrote it, and after listening to it I can't imagine why anyone would listen to the Monkees version. There are a lot of good songs on it.

I'm actually a huge fan of really classic (read: old) country, like George Jones, Lefty Frizell, Webb Pierce, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams, etc. As part of the 90s alt-country scene, it became cool to listen to all the country music I had rejected when I was listening to new wave and punk through the 80s.

Were any of you guys fans of the TV show, "Hee Haw?" I remember watching that with my parents when I was really young. Also, I remember my parents used to occasionally watch that show with the Mandrell Sisters...they were pretty good.

We watched both Hee Haw and the Mandrell Sisters show. I remember the "muppet backup band" was a big hit on the Mandrell's show.
Hee Haw is actually out on DVD now, and reruns were recently being shown on CMT. It's amazing how it was sort of the hick "Laugh-In" with the wacky animations, crazy camera moves and quick one-liner jokes and running gags.
Gloom, despair and agony on me...
Deep dark depression, excessive misery.
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.
Gloom, despair and agony on me.

I enjoy almost all kinds of music, from Classical and Jazz, to Big Band, Blues, and Rock. And yes, I also listen to a lot of Country.
I mostly listen to the music from the late 1960's until the early 1990's. Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, David Allen Coe, Dolly Parton, Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr, Charlie Daniels, CCR, and Garth Brooks.
And I have been lucky enough to see many of them in concert. Last year, Van Zant performed at the Peanut Festival. And the year before that Charlie Daniels performed. At our local Country bar I have been able to see Hank Williams Jr. Jr. and David Allen Coe. And back when I lived in California, I was able to see Colin Raye. And I also saw Lee Greenwood once on a USO tour.

I like Restless Heart alot too. I remember "When She Cries" and "Tell Me What You Dream" playing alot in the mid '90s (I later discovered their older material like "I'll Still Be Loving You"). And even though I'm not that into Garth Brooks, I do like "The Thunder Rolls". It had an interesting storyline video too, if I remember.
I used to confuse alot of '80s and '90s country songs from each other, to be honest. Because it's not strictly pop (despite its mainstream crossover appeal), it doesn't follow the exact trends as closely as Top 40. So alot of '90s Country probably up to 1994 or '95 even, had a tinge of '80s to it. Heck, I remember alot of the guys had mullets too!

I'm a big Johnny Cash fan, so anything by him. I also adore Dolly Parton. The song "Me and Little Andy" still brings a tear to my eye. I also love Sawyer Brown - I'm pretty sure they started out in the 80's, and Alabama is great too. I need to download some country!
Oh, and "Flowers on the Wall" by the Statler Brothers is also a favorite.
We watched Hee Haw and Barbara Mandrell too - hokey, but so great!

Yeah, alot of the country that came out in the early '90s still sounded pretty similar to '80s country. Garth Brooks was the first country artists to have a big time cross over appeal(as far as I know anyway), but it wasn't until the about 1995 or so that country started to become the way it is today.
Btw, I love Restless Heart. Even though there's only one of there songs in my personal top 5, they've got about 10-15 songs that I really like.

To me, Classis Country is performers like George Jones, Hank Williams, Sr, Chet Atkins, Merle Haggard, Charlie Pride, Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Roy Clark and Johnny Cash.
As far as some of the new stuff goes: Aaron Tippin is country to the bone and so is Tracey Lawrence.

Well it certainly does look good...I notice you had a wide variety of stuff on there, from the 70s, 80s, 90s. I bet it would be interesting to check out a few of those.
The songs with the Canadian flag icon next to them, I take it those are Canadian country bands/artists. Is that right?

Originally I was just going to make it strictly 80s country, but I couldn't leave out some of those 70s or 90s ones

All but one. The flags actually signify the songs that met CANCON requirements, so I could include those songs that were written by Canadians, but not sung by Canadians. In this case, the only one I used was the Jennifer Warnes song :)
