Subject: Karaoke songs that transcend time

Written By: Rice_Cube on 12/02/06 at 2:43 pm

Like this one.

Can you guys think of any others?  I can list a few that can be sung in just about any setting...

1.  Journey -- Don't Stop Believin'
2.  Queen -- Bohemian Rhapsody
3.  Cyndi Lauper -- Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
4.  Marvin Gaye -- Let's Get It On
5.  Bon Jovi -- Livin' On a Prayer

I sang the first one at a graduate student function and got a standing ovation.  Booya!

A few of us sang "Eat It" by Weird Al at a karaoke party once.  That was a lot of fun.

Good choices.  But nothing livens up a room like some Journey.

A few of us sang "Eat It" by Weird Al at a karaoke party once.  That was a lot of fun.

In 1992-1994, I used to go every week with a bunch of friends to sing Karaoke.  And because I know I have a very limited singing range, I always stuck with a few "party songs".  "Down On The Corner", "Ghostbusters",  and "I'm Henry The VIII" were really the only ones I would ever do solo for ages.  But a bunch of us would get up as a group and sing "Love Shack" by the B-52's.

I still remember asking the KJ to put in song 01-01, and he looked at me like I was crazy.  Then when the first bars of music started to play over the speakers, everybody looked at me like I had totally lost my mind.

I then did a rendition of "Like A Surgon" completely from memory (since he had no "Weird Al" songs, I had him play the original "Like A Virgin").  We even had people come in that were waiting in the bar and resteraunt to find out what everybody was laughing about.  At other times, I have sung "Addicted To Spuds", "Here's Johnny", and "Alimony".

After all, I know I can't sing.  So whenever I get up, I just try to entertain people.

And one that I have not seen mentioned is "Unchained Melody".  I had a friend that would get up and try to sing that every week.  Of course, it did not help that Keith could not carry a tune if it was in a bucket with handles, and he had "terminal white man's disease" when it came to keeping a beat.  But he still sang it every week, no matter how much we begged him not to.  But he had fun, and that is all that really matters.

But Mush, you're not SUPPOSED to karaoke because you can sing, you do it because you suck and it's fun anyway!  :D

Look at the Japanese ;)

I sorta kinda can sing decently and my rendition of "Don't Stop Believing" garnered me a small fan club.

I don't think I could ever channel Meat Loaf.  I have neither the meat nor the loaf.

There's only one person who can sing like Meatloaf.

Well, the first times I actually sang Karaoke, I was in Japan.

In 1988, I was stationed in Japan, and a bunch of friends and me would go to a small local "Japanese Bar" (one that caters to Japanese clients - not a strip bar for the military).  They had a really good Karaoke system, and a lot of the patrons were very good.

However, they only had 2 songs in English.  If we wanted to take a turn singing, we could choose from "Yesterday" by The Beatles, or "You Are My Sunshine".  Needless to say, we always did Yesterday.  And I still remember that Karaoke, because the background was a bunch of naked models.  8)

Journey is good, but you obviously haven't been to too many places, karaoke-wise.
Each venue has its own musical ambience.

There's only one person who can sing like Meatloaf.

That's true...but, depending on who you ask, there are those who reputedly sing better than Meat Loaf.
Ask my wife- she's a HUGE Meat Loaf fan, and has acutally met him.
I'd say that makes her an authority.

Of course there are singers who sing better than Meatloaf.

They're all professionals.

Technically, anyone who makes more than 55% of their income by being paid to sing or entertain in a musical manner is considered "professional".

Oh, well, now!
That's a kilt of a different tartan!

When it comes to THAT, it comes down to a matter of opinion, I suppose.
Personally, I'm rather thankful that Meat Loaf is still out there.
It shows me that anyone who says larger men have no place in the music world anywhere other than opera, country, or blues, needs to have their schooling re-done.

It also gives me hope that I could actually make it out there.
