Subject: Words That You Can Never Pronounce

Written By: ultraviolet52 on 07/25/06 at 4:55 pm

Just as we have trouble misspelling some words, we all seem to have a similar problem with saying certain words and also butchering them everytime they come out of our mouth.

What are some of the words you just can't seem to say right no matter how hard you try to remember their pronunciation?

I have a pet peeve here too.  I had a co-worker once who always said "pacific" when she meant "specific."  We worked in a very professional environment and it always bothered me that she didn't know how to say "specific."  BUT...I never corrected her, which I felt bad about, but at the time I was shy to do it.  That was many years ago.  NOW, I think I'd correct her on it.  What would you do in that situation?

Also, I have a friend now who often uses the phrase "It never ceases to amaze me..." but she says it wrong.  She says "It ceases to amaze me..." which really means "it stops amazing me" which is contrary to her meaning.  Should I correct her?

In this case, I'd say it's not so much an accent as a case of never having been taught correctly.  (same thing?  cultural?)  Still...I think I should have filled her in.

As a southerner I mispronounce the following due to my accent: water, didn't, doesn't and any gerund. That means water is "wut-er," didn't is "dit-un," doesn't is "dut-un" and gerunds become "runnin," "spellin" etc. Also tornado becomes "tornada." To say them correctly causes too much enunciation and people are always complementing me on not having an accent so I don't guess its a problem.
The real problem is that people outside the south don't know what an educated person's accent sounds like; they think we're all at one end of the scale talking like Gomer Pyle or the other, Scarlett O'Hara (who was British, incidentally.)

Words I don't know how to pronounce having only seen them written: debacle, incongruous, abysmal.

I'm originally from New Yawk City.  I have a bit of an accent too.  I think most people know the difference between someone with an accent and someone who doesn't know how to use their native language properly.  (And please know, I don't in any comments mean to make any judgment on people in this manner.  I just have a couple of particular pet peeves regarding language...my own pickiness.)

From Wikipedia ('coz I can't explain it myself):

The short 'i' in New Zealand English is pronounced as a schwa /ə/. In Australian English, the short 'u' is often thought to be the vowel closest to the New Zealand pronunciation. So Australians frequently joke about New Zealanders having "fush and chups" instead of "fish and chips". However, it is really closer to an almost dropped vowel, so it's more like "f'sh and ch'ps".

Those are all the R's that we take off of words that are supposed to have them:

"My mutha and my fatha and my brutha and my sista are goin' out but I'd ratha say home."  ;)

I have the hardest time pronouncing the word horror.

Should be easy right?  I always get stuck on the first sylable for some unknown reason.  Instead of prouncing it - Hore - Er, I say Hore (pause while I try to make sure I say it right) then say Or.

When I was little I could not pronounce Commercial, I'd call it Ma- Ker - Shell.  Same thing with Cinnemon.  I'd pronounce it Sim - a - nun.  Thankfully, I've learnt how to say it correctly.  Now I just have to work on the word Horror.  ;D

The first one is a word...and you spelled it right.  It's pronounced "Egg-ZASS-er-bate" and it means....to exaggerate but in a negative way ... um .... to aggravate or make worse. (When Alex and Katie are fighting, Nick joins in which only exacerbates the problem.)

As far as "encilliary" -- Perhaps you are thinking of "ancillary" -- "An-SILL-a-ree" -- which means, I think, secondary or under (as in rank).  That's my best guess 'cause I don't think 'encilliary' is a word.

A pet peeve of mine with pronounciation is when people of one English dialect try and prounce English words in another dialect. It just comes off sounding terrible.

Eg:

Pro-nun-ciate instead of Pro-noun-ciate
Shed-ule instead of Ske-dule
Clark instead of Clerk
etc.

So which do you say?  clark or clerk?  'Cos I would say clark.  Like Berkshire (where the dogs live)

Clerk.. like in a store.

The only clark I know is the shoe shop.

I have a really hard time pronouncing the word vulnerable.

Also, my biggest pet peeve is when people say Eye-talian for Italian.  It makes me crazy!

Two words that are constantly mispronounced when readers come across them in a paragraph.

Epitome and Paradigm.

Did you just pronouce them correctly?

You'd be surprised how many times I hear,

Epi-toe-me  and  Pair-eh-dig-em
My best friend in high school read the word "epitome" and figured out what it meant, but kept saying "ep-i-tome" (3 syllables) until I asked her what the heck she was saying and she spelled it for me ;D

The word I have the most trouble with is "veterinarian"  I can't even describe how I say it because I usually just say "vet" ;D

Plus I use it in every conversation.

I can't say Parenthesis.. I say it like I was writing a college english paper.

Pah-run-thee-sees.

Yes, the singular and plural of that word always get confused. Parentheses (the plural, which ends with "seez") is most common, as the punctuation marks are usually used in pairs. However, the singular is parenthesis (pa-REN-thuh-siss), although I often say "parenthesee" to indicate just one.

'Impropriety' 'similarly' and 'regularly' are three that I always have trouble with...so I simply don't use 'em!

If I do, I always manage to slip an extra syllable in that shouldn't be there... :-[

My father-in-law adds an extra letter to the word 'across'...making it 'acrosst'!  ::)

Hm...out of habit, I sometimes take the last letter off 'months' and 'weeks', but only in a past tense...

For example...something happened three week ago, but something will happen in three weeks...

I'm crazy, but you already know that!

That's interesting... :)

I can't think of anything 'peculiar' about the way I speak, though somebody who doesn't know me might be able to detect something...

I'm crazy, but you already know that!

Heh!  ;)
