Subject: Did You Know? - The Music Edition

Do you know any little known facts or something just weird or quirky about your favorite artists or just any artist in particular? Here's some useless info I just had floating around my brain! ;D
* Elton John and Bernie Taupin never collaborate in the same room. Bernie writes the lyrics and then gives
them to Elton who then puts music to them
* John Lennon was dyslexic
* Gene Simmons tongue is said to be 7 inches long :o (I have no idea why I know that!) :D

Despite composing countless bucketloads of amazingly successful songs (including several 'classical' pieces), Paul McCartney cannot read a note of music!

Some facts about Bryan Adams ...
* According to CANCON rules, his 1991 album "Waking Up the Neighbours" didn't qualify for Canadian Content because the album was recorded in England, and he co-wrote all of the songs with British producer Mutt Lange
* He wrote two songs about murdered Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratten. The first one was called "Cover Girl" and was a hit song for the band Prism in 1981. The second one was called "The Best Was Yet to Come" and appears as an album track on his 1983 LP "Cuts Like a Knife"

Peter Gabriel Facts-
The song "San Jacinto" was written after Peter helped a Native American man rescue his cat from a house fire. Peter was horrified to learn how this man was treated, including being brutally jailed for a murder he was later shown not to have committed.
"Digging In the Dirt" is, succintly put, about the darker side of one's psyche. Peter did this one after his break-up from Jill Moore (after 17 yrs. of marriage), and an aborted relationship w/Rosanna Arquette.
Despite his pioneering work with the music video, and his phenomenal success in the music business, Peter has never been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
"Biko" is the only song that has consistently been in almost every performance Peter has ever done.
The song was written in honor of murdered African rights leader Steven Biko.
Peter is the grandson of Sir Thomas Gabriel.
Peter is anti-war, anti-abortion, and anti-Death Penalty, politically.

Facts about the Ramones
The band's name "Ramones" was originated from Paul McCartney's early stage name "Ramon".
Johnny Ramone was a right wing conservative, infact the song "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" (written about Ronald Reagan), was changed to, "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down".
Joey Ramone started out as the bands first drummer...but he wasn't very good, so he went to vocals.
Dee Dee Ramone was the one who usually shouted out, "1-2-3-4" at the beginning of a lot of their songs.
Only 5 people witnessed the Ramones first gig at New York's CBGB's.
The Ramones are mentioned in Stephen King's book, "Pet Cemetery".
Joey Ramone has a street named after him in New York.
Johnny's wife Linda originally dated Joey Ramone.
Joey Ramone suffered from OCD.
Johnny Ramone liked to drink "Yoo-Hoo's" frequently.

The song "Panic" by the Smiths was written by Morrissey when he was outraged that local DJ Steve Wright played Wham!'s "I'm Your Man" right after the news announcement of the horrible Chernoblyl disaster.
On stage, Morrissey would twirl a noose around and wore a shirt with a passport photo of Steve Wright with "HANG THE DJ" stamped over the picture.
Hence the repetitve "Hang the DJ" at the end of the song. :)

Speaking of Elton John, in America, he was the only artist to have atleast 1 Top 40 hit each year for 26 consecutive years (1970-1996)
Also, Elton holds the record for longest chart single in Canada ... Candle in the Wind '97 spent 3 consecutive years in the Canadian Singles chart, 45 weeks of which were at #1. This is due to the fact that CD singles are not widely available in all CD stores in Canada, so a song can chart based on 100 singles sold in a week

When it was first recorded, Freddie gave his pal DJ Kenny Everett a 'demo' of the song (up to this point, the band were hesitant to release it as a single because of its length)...
In an unprecedented move, Everett played it repeatedly for half a hour and the phone lines lit up...not from complaints, but from an amazed general public wanting to know when they could buy the record...

During celebrations for the station's 1,000,000th video airing, they were counting down the 25 most played videos in MTV history. As the countdown was going towards #1, the videos played were also going toward #1,000,000. The 6th most played video in MTV history was "Video Killed The Radio Star" and that just also happened to video play 1,000,000. So this video shares a distinction of having two milestone plays in MTV history. :)

That I have never heard but will watch out when researching.
It was written by written by John Stafford Smith with words by Ralph Tomlinson, Esq.
Here are the orginal lyrics:
To Anacreon in Heav'n, where he sat in full glee,
A few Sons of Harmony sent a petition;
That he their Inspirer and Patron wou'd be;
When this answer arrived from the Jolly Old Grecian;
"Voice, Fiddle, and Flute,
No longer be mute,
I'll lend you my name and inspire you to boot,
And besides I'll instruct you like me, to intwine,
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine."
The news through Olympus immediately flew;
When Old Thunder pretended to give himself airs.
If these Mortals are suffered their scheme to pursue,
The Devil, a Goddess, will stay above stairs.
"Hark," already they cry,
"In transports of joy,
Away to the Sons of Anacreon we'll fly.
And besides I'll instruct you like me, to intwine,
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine.
The Yellow-Haired God and his nine lusty Maids,
From Helion's banks will incontinent flee,
Idalia will boast but of tenantless Shades,
And the bi-forked hill a mere desert will be.
My Thunder no fear on't,
Shall soon do it's errand,

It was written by written by John Stafford Smith with words by Ralph Tomlinson, Esq.
Here are the orginal lyrics:
To Anacreon in Heav'n, where he sat in full glee,
A few Sons of Harmony sent a petition;
That he their Inspirer and Patron wou'd be;
When this answer arrived from the Jolly Old Grecian;
"Voice, Fiddle, and Flute,
No longer be mute,
I'll lend you my name and inspire you to boot,
And besides I'll instruct you like me, to intwine,
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine."
The news through Olympus immediately flew;
My Thunder no fear on't,
Shall soon do it's errand,
And damme I'll swing the Ringleaders I warrant,
I'll trim the young dogs, for thus daring to twine,
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine."
Apollo rose up and said, "Pry'thee ne'er quarrel,

Yeah, the lyrics-as well as the tune is hard to sing when your sober. Somehow I don't think it caught on as well as 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.

This reminds me of a drunk I saw and heard on the Tube one night, he was standing close to the doors. He would speak in a total slur, but when he sang he was word perfect for the whole song or songs. He was singing hits from the early 80s, especially Fun Boy Three's The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum) , with the other songs very well.

Unlike the 'cabaret' that us 'overground' users endured a few years back...
Mostly of Eastern European descent, several middle-aged males would board rush-hour trains at Cannon Street and proceed to serenade the work-weary commuters withvery loud trumpets!
(And of course, the obligatory 'donation jar'!)
Herb Alpert these guys weren't! And the only thing that ever got donated was the universally understood term of '**** Off'...thank heaven someone stopped 'em!

The 1982 hit "Hold On" by Santana was written by Ian Thomas, who originally had a cross-Canada hit with it in 1981.
Ian, whose lone American hit was "Painted Ladies" in 1973 suddenly saw a brief spell of American success in the 80s as a songwriter. Along with "Hold On", his 1977 hit "Right Before Your Eyes" became a modest hit for America in 1982, his 1981 hit "Chains" appeared as an album track on Chicago's 1982 album "Chicago 16" and his 1981 single "The Runner" became the comeback hit for Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1984

I'm sure most know this that the Star Spangled Banner is sung to the tune of an old English drinking song.
The Star Spangled Banner has 4 verses,
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us as a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Here's a bit of trivia about Billy Idol. His popular song "Dancing With Myself" was not a chart hit. The version he recorded with Gen X in 1980 was a minor hit in the UK, but the song in any version by him never impacted the charts in North America
It got alot of radio play and video play, but it never charted. I was surprised cause I remember hearing it alot on the radio
I must correct myself here. I just noticed that "Dancing With Myself" by Billy Idol got to #39 in the Canadian Singles Chart in December of 1983. It never charted in America

Some tidbits about Duran Duran:
In 1964 Six-year-old Simon LeBon was kicked out of Middlesex Cub Scouts for retaliating against an older boy by smacking him in the face with a pair of shoes.
In 1972 John Taylor was kicked out of music class at school for showing more interest in Alice Cooper than the standard curriculum.
In 1977 Andy Taylor joined pop punk band The Gigolos, which soon changes its name to Motorway. Motorway signed a singles deal with A&M Records, and put out their first and only record, a single called 'Teenage Girls'.
In 1979 the band writes 'See Me, Repeat Me', which will eventually evolve into 'Rio'.
And During a show at Birmingham University. the crowd throws everything they can at Duran, covering them in tomato ketchup.
In 1980 Perry Haines (who co-founded British style magazine I-D, and coined the term "new romantic") took charge of the band's image.
On February 24, 1981 Duran Duran's first scheduled television appearance is cancelled because of Prince Charles and Lady Diana's engagement announcement.

Here's another tidbit about Duran ...
Their original lead singer was Stephen Duffy who co-founded the group with John Taylor and Nick Rhodes. He left the band in 1979 before they secured a record deal. He would go on to a solo career under the name Tin Tin, then as Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy. His 1985 single "Kiss Me" was popular in both the UK and Canada, but was not a success in America

David Bowie had to change his name because there was already a preformer by his birth name-David (Davy) Jones.
And the same Davy Jones (of the Monkees) was also on the same Ed Sullivan Show that Beatles made their U.S. debut (Feb.9, 1964). He was with the cast of Oliver as the Artful Dodger.

I presume that this last title didn't inspire the Gompie mash-up of Smokie's 'Alice (Who The F**k Is Alice)'? ;)
Of course, this was nabbed for the British market by Smokie themselves...
...and it became the first record with the dreaded F-word to reach the British Top 10... :o
And even cleaner-than-clean Irish crooner Daniel O'Donnell has had a go, but he tastefully replaces the offending word with 'heck'... ;)

OK, I have a few for you...
1. The song "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar was written by a Canadian out of Toronto named Eddie Schwartz who had a Canadian song released in 1984 called "Special Girl".
2. Eric Clapton dropped the song "Tears In Heaven" from his concert playlist a couple of years ago, because playing it wasn't as emotional to him as it once was. It was written as a tribute to his deceased son. In March of 1991, his son Conor was killed when he fell out of a 53rd story window in NYC. Eric Clapton also shared the stage with Stevie Ray Vaughn the night that Stevie's helicopter crashed, taking his life.
3. Phil Collins was not the first choice to replace Peter Gabriel when he left Genisis. Phil was already the groups drummer when the other band members put him in charge of giving vocal coaching lessons to the prospective replacements, which included Yes frontman Jon Anderson. Only after realizing that nobody could measure up to Peter's standards, they went with Collins. Some people still think that he outGabrieled Gabriel in the vocal department.
4. The song "When I'm With You" by the Canadian rock group Sheriff charted in the US in 1989, but it was a major Canadian hit back in 1983. A DJ from Las Vegas found the song, and started to play it, and it caught on like wildfire across the US. The funny thing is that when it became a US top forty hit, the band had already been disbanded for years. The lead singer had given up the music biz and was a delivery driver in Toronto at the time.
5. The Buddy holly hit "Peggy Sue" was originally titled "Cindy Lou", named for his niece. It was later changed to Peggy Sue for his drummer's girlfriend at the time and future wife, Peggy Sue Gerron.
6. That before he became the lead singer for the rock band AC DC in 1974, Bon Scott was their chauffeur. The original singer, Dave Evans, was considered too glam rock for the boys liking, and after giving Bon a tryout, they gave Dave the boot, and Bon was in.
7.That Zak Starkey, the drummer for Oasis, and sometimes for The Who, is Ringo Starr's son.
8. That Steven Van Zandt of "The Soprano's" fame, was an original member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. He left the group shortly before Bruce released his 1984 album Born In The USA. Despite going solo, Bruce was able to convince him to appear in the Glory Days video anyways.
That's all for now.

10. And finally, The Grateful Dead never had a Top 40 hit before 1987's "A Touch Of Grey". It was also their first commercially released video ever.

Yes sir! Eddie had other solo hits with "Does A Fool Ever Learn" in 1980, "All Our Tomorrows" in 1981, "Over the Line" in 1982 and "Strike" in 1984. He also wrote the 1987 hit "Don't Shed A Tear" for Paul Carrack and co-wrote the 1989 hits "The Doctor" by the Doobie Brothers and "I Live by the Groove" by Paul Carrack. He also co-wrote the 1990 song "All the Lovers in the World" with Canadian singer Lawrence Gowan, who turned it into a smash hit in Canada
Eddie made a solo comeback in 1995 with the album "Tour De Schwartz" that had two hits with "Every Road I Take" and "Bourbon Street", as well as his versions of "Don't Shed A Tear", "Hit Me With You Best Shot" and "All the Lovers in the World"

Did YOU know that "When I'm With You" wasn't their first hit? Their debut single "You Remind Me" cracked the Canadian Top 40 in 1982. "When I'm Wth You" charted in early 1983 :)
When the band broke up, members Arnold Lanni and Wolf Hassel formed Frozen Ghost to much success only in Canada and in 1989 found themselves competing with themselves upon the re-relase of "When I'm With You". This also promoted the remaining Sheriff members to come back onto the scene, and thus formed the group Alias, whose hit "More Than Words Can Say" was the second biggest selling single in Canada of 1990
On a surprising note, "When I'm With You" was the 67th biggest selling song in Canada for 1983

Not quite...he'd had hits in his homeland since 1947, although a lot of chart books seem to 'forget' about the period before RnR became mainstream (pre-'55)...
Curiously enough, both he and Guy Mitchell became white-hot in Britain just as their chart fortunes in the States started to decline...
Frankie still holds the British record for the longest stay at #1 with 'I Believe' (1953)...18 weeks, which I can't imagine ever being broken...

Did YOU know that most of the covers of Mercury Blues in the last 20 years or so, are based on not so much a cover version of the original, but a version by David Lindley from his 1981 album El Rayo X. On that album, David rewrote the music to several old songs and put his own spin on them. To anybody who knows the Steve Miller version of Mercury Blues, from the album "Fly Like An Eagle" in 1976, the only thing shared by the two versions are the lyrics.

.. that in Canada, 10cc had their last Top 40 hit with "Don't Turn Me Away" in 1982, 5 years after their final Top 40 hits in the UK (Dreadlock Holiday, 1978) and America (People in Love, 1977)
I had a feeling that something didn't quite add up in the chart findings I came across. Seems like the pre RnR period is often overlooked in artists discographies.

Paul McCartney woke up from a dream in the mid 60's with the music to "Yesterday" floating around in his head. When he woke up, he went to the piano, and recorded the melody so he would remember it. As he put it, "For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before. Eventually it became like handing something in to the police. I thought if no-one claimed it after a few weeks then I could have it". After being satisfied that he wasn't plagiarizing another artists work, he wrote temporary lyrics to it, with the title "Scrambled Eggs", so he wouldn't forget the flow of the music. "Yesterday" later became the most covered song in the world, with more than 3000 versions performed by other artists. The song was so much different from the other songs released by The Beatles at the time, George, Ringo, and John refused to allow it's release as a single in the UK.

On the Eagles song "Hotel California:"
The line "They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast" is a reference to Steely Dan. They shared the same manager and had a friendly rivalry. The year before, Steely Dan included the line "Turn up The Eagles, the neighbors are listening" on the song "Everything You Did."
A vast majority of people hear "Mirrors on the ceiling, the pink champagne on ice," but if you listen real close he clearly
says "Depict champagne on ice."
This is one line that will be argued for an eternity. ;D

Paul McCartney learned how in the late nineties, I think.
And Captain Beefheart, well... He would whistle his songs, and one of his bandmates would transcribe it. XD This is why his songs sound a mess.

That's what I've heard.. but I don't think that's why they sound like such a mess.. apparently Beefheart did that on purpose.. he was very strict with his musicians, there was to be no deviation from exactly what you were to play.
Apparently The Birthday Party were the same way, I just found out.. though the music sounds on the verge of collapse, it was apparently very precisely-written.

Some interesting facts....
Paint It Black is about the view of someone who's depressed, he wants everything to be black, just like his mood.
"I turn my head until my darkness goes" is from James Joyce's Ulysses.
It was also the theme song from the TV show, Tour of Duty. Unfortunatly, because it was too expensive to continue using the song, it ended getting replaced with an instrumental version instead.
The lyrics for Sympathy For The Devil, were insipired by the novel "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov

In the 70s, ex James Gang (and future Guess Who) member Domenic Troiano had a band called Bush, and still owned the rights to the name. In the late 90s, Gavin Rossdale and Troiano worked out a deal, and gave Rossdale the rights to the name so they could lose the X

"Pop Muzik" was performed by Robin Scott, known as M. The album New York London Paris Munich was recorded in Montreux in Switzerland, and (at the time) local Montreux resident David Bowie was able to attend the recordings.
By the way, also on the album an engineer Wally Badarou who was to later work with Steve Winwood, and the drummer was Level 42's Phil Gould.

Icelandic group Sigur Ros hold the record for most consecutive weeks in the top 40 of the Canadian Singles Sales Chart without reaching #1
Their mysterious track 'Untitled 1' spent over 160 weeks in the chart. It first entered the Top 40 in June of 2003 and was still in the Top 40 by mid 2006.
It is a beautiful song :)
EDIT: I may be wrong. According to the figures I researched, Elton John's 'Candle in the Wind '97' only spent 140 weeks in the Top 40 which would make Sigur Ros the record holder in general with or without a #1 position. I'll need to research Sigur Ros's run in the chart and come back to this later ... Stay Tuned!

... that in Canada, Bob Marley had no hit singles while he was alive, but became a one hit wonder long after his death? His only charting single here came in 2000 when the popular remix 'Sun is Shining' (credited to Bob Marley vs. Funk Star Deluxe) reached #38 on the Canadian chart
I must correct myself here .. Long after his passing, Bob Marley first hit the Canadian chart in 1992 with 'Iron Lion Zion'. 'Sun is Shining' followed in 2000, giving him a total of only 2 hits in Canada
In Canada, there is more than one chart used to measure hit singles, and I didn't even notice 'Iron Lion Zion' until just recently :-[

55 weeks is pretty good. From what I've seen on the UK charts, something like that won't ever occur again? Seems like a song will de but in the UK at it's peak, then quickly fall off the chart
If you thought Sigur Ros had an unbelievable run, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Based on several charts in Canada used to measure hit singles, here's more ...
CANADIAN SINGLES CHART (based only on Sales)
Candle in the Wind '97 - Elton John
- The full top 40 after 1999 isn't archived to my knowledge, so I can only see what's in the Top 10. As of September 23, 2000, it had been in the chart consecutively for 156 weeks, holding #1 for 35 consecutive weeks (45 weeks total at #1)
Paradoxx - 666
- Entered in 1999, and ran for 112 consecutive weeks. It peaked at #9
Quit Playing Games (With My Heart) - Backstreet Boys
- Entered in 1997. Peaked at #3 and ran for 85 weeks
RPM 100 SINGLES (Canada's equivalent to the Billboard Hot 100. It ceased in 2000)
American Woman - Lenny Kravitz
- 56 weeks in the Top 100, peaking at #26. 37 of those weeks were spent outside of the Top 40
THE RECORD (Retail singles chart)
The Power of Love - Celine Dion
- Entered in 1994, running 70 weeks in the Top 40 and holding #1 for 7 weeks

If we're discussing longevity...
The current record for longevity in Dutch Top 40 is held by Corry & De Rekels. Their song "Huilen Is Voor Jou Te Laat" (It's too late for you to cry) spent 41 consecutive weeks in the chart in 1970 (without reaching #1, btw - it peaked at #5).
And here's a little added trivia: the song was written by none other than Father Abraham (yes, the bearded bard with his Smurfs!)
The Dutch Top 40 isn't the only Dutch chart. There are (and have been) others, like the Mega Top 100. The record for longevity in that chart is held by Kabouter Plop with the "Kabouterdans" (Gnome's dance), a rather childish (but extremely catchy) tune that spent 62 consecutive weeks in that chart. I don't think it reached #1, but if memory serves, it did make top 10.
For comparison: the very same record only lasted 3 weeks in Dutch Top 40, because the latter was based on airplay at that time (2001).

Hiss... >:(
Actually, the bearded one and his chums also belong to an exclusive British chart club...the most weeks spent at #2 with (guess what?) 'The Smurf Song'...it stayed there for six weeks! :o
There's only been nine records in the entire history of the British chart that have had six week (or longer) stays in runner-up spot...

But as they were classified as a 'group', they can't really be considered for the youngest chart topper title, even if the lead singer was younger than Little Jim by a year!
Also, did you know that the St Winifred's School Choir hold an unique position in the UK Charts?
The St Winifred's School Choir feature on two One Hit Wonders that reached number #1, their own Grandma record and Brian And Michael's Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk by Cats And Dogs

Yes...that's them again (albeit with ever-so slightly different members I'd assume!)
Going back to 'Grandma' (which was originally intended to have been released to coincide with HM Queen Mother's 80th birthday that year), did you know that Prog-Rock God and curry fancier Rick Wakeman provides the keyboards on this? :o
(I didn't either, but it comes from a very reliable source...)
I should hope he keeps very quiet about it!

You know what's even worse about it? The song itself in any shape or form was not a hit in the USA. Canada, the UK and other parts of the world got all the torture :\'(
It's not a bad song, but it's not a good song either. Makes you wonder if the Mini Pops ever did a version :D

He played on quite a few records as a jobbing keyboardist before his big time both solo and with Yes (he can also be heard on T.Rex's 'Get It On', or 'Bang A Gong' if you must! ::))
But there's probably quite a few of his efforts not worth talking openly about!

Did you know that before becoming a popular Country Music singer, Vince Gill was the lead singer for the band Pure Prairie League. He joined the group in 1979, and sang on a bunch of songs that charted on Billboard in the 80s including the 1980 smash "Let Me Love You Tonight" which was the group's biggest hit ever
This is an interesting thread by the way, but I never knew that the song "Let Me Love You Tonight" was Pure Prairie League's biggest hit. I always thought it was their 1975 tune "Amie" which has received way more "Airplay"; Oh well you learn something new everyday.

In June 25, 1988, Deborah Gibson became the youngest artist to write, produce, and record a #1 hit at age 17 (wrote the song at 14) with "Foolish Beat".
Even as a teenager, Deb never lliked to be called "Debbie", which Atlantic Records actually wanted her to be called 'Debbie', but always have preferred to be called by her full name Deborah. Notice in liner notes it states, "Written/Produced by Deborah Gibson'.
9 Top 40 Hits between 1987 and 1990. Five in the top 10 and two #1's ("Foolish Beat" & "Lost In Your Eyes")
Wrote "Only In My Dreams" at 13.
First song she wrote was "Make Sure You Know Your Classroom" at age 5. Also started writing songs at that age.
At age 10 she was part of a chior that performed at the Metropolitan Opera House with such artists like Placido Domingo.
She was an extra on the 1984 Blockbuster "Ghostbusters" and also appeared in commercials for Commodore computers, Wendy's, and Mandee's department store.
Started recording music at 12/13.
Was taught to play the piano by Mortin Estrin, who also taught Billy Joel.
Though many music snobs say that her third album "Anything Is Possible" flopped, it actually went gold and the title track's a moderate, though unfortunately forgotten, hit.
Her "No More Rhyme" music video features a cameo of Danica McKellar from "The Wonder Years"
Her "Out Of The Blue" music video features a cameo of Jeff Russo who later became one of the members of '90's alternative band Tonic.
Became a successful stage actress who appeared in musicals like "Les Miserables", "Grease", "Beauty & The Beast", and "Cabaret".
Appeared in a 1995 episode of "Step by Step" as fictional singer Christi Rose. The song "Don'tcha Want Me Now" is actually one of Deb's songs that appeared in her 1995 album "Think With Your Heart".
In 1989/1990, Deb was to star in her own movie titled "Skirts", but got scrapped and later became a musical she wrote... especially that she originally wrote songs for the movie. Ironically, "Skirts" was to be directed by Kenny Ortega... who choreographed the '80's classic "Dirty Dancing" and directed the horrible "High School Musical" movies.
Posed for Playboy because she felt more comfortable with her body and that she have worn sexy costumes in theatre roles in "Gypsy", "Chicago", and "Cabaret". Also she have worn midriffs/low cut outfits in the past decade. BTW, the pictures were well done and there's more raunchy images in other magazines, movies, and tv...which she have stated herself.
Her favorite artists: Micheal Buble, Matchbox 20, Alicia Keys, Chris Botti, Marc Anthony, and also a fan of country music. Not to mention musical theatre, which she always been fond of. She respects Mandy Moore and Anvril Lavinge.
In interviews, she admits that she's a fan of "American Idol".
As a teen, she worshipped George Michael and actually liked '80's hard rock bands like Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard, and Poison.
She lists Billy Joel & Elton John as her musical influences.
In 1988, she actually performed with Billy Joel & Elton John at Madison Square Garden which they performed "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"

Legal action was taken in 1965, when the song Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious was the subject of an unsuccessful lawsuit by songwriters Gloria Parker and Barney Young against Wonderland Music, who published the version of the song from the Walt Disney film. The plaintiffs alleged that it was a copyright infringement of a 1951 song of their own called Supercalafajalistickespeealadojus. Also known as The Super Song, Supercalafajalistickespeealadojus was recorded by Alan Holmes and his New Tones on Columbia Records, Vocal by Hal Marquess and the Holmes Men, music and lyrics by Patricia Smith a Gloria Parker pen name. In addition, Supercalafajalistickespeealadojus was recorded on Gloro Records by The Arabian Knights. The Disney publishers won the lawsuit partially because affidavits were produced showing that "variants of the word were known (...) many years prior to 1949."

Beeb Birtles, Glenn Shorrock and Graeham Goble were founding members of Little River Band. Due to line up changes over the years, they lost the rights to the Little River Band name and currently record under the name 'Birtles, Shorrock, Goble'
Stephen Housden, who joined LRB in 1981 (after 'Time Exposure' had already been completed), was handed down the rights to the LRB name (after all the original members had quit), and filed legal action against the aforementioned trio (and won) when they attempted to comeback as 'The Original Little River Band'. He also took further legal action to prevent them from making reference to LRB on their releases and shows, but lost (thankfully).
Wayne Nelson, who joined LRB in 1980 (and sang lead on 'The Night Owls') is currently the only member still existing from their 80s days, but that alone is not enough as the rest of the current LRB line-up is comprised of American musicians, Nelson included.
If you ever want to see Little River Band perform live, go and see 'Birtles Shorrock Goble'. If you want to see a cover band singing LRB songs, then go see 'Little River Band'
It's any wonder why BSG didn't counter sue and say "We wrote those songs, so you aren't allowed to sing them"

Roger (born: Roger Troutman) was the vocalist for 80s Funk band Zapp. On his own, his 1987 single I Want to Be Your Man was a Top 40 hit across North America (as well as a minor hit in the UK). He also provided the talk box vocals on Scritti Politti's minor (US and UK) 1988 hit Boom (There She Was)
"I Want To Be Your Man" reached #8 in Holland.
Roger's distinct vocals can also be heard on "California Love", an international hit for Dr. Dre & 2Pac.
Roger Troutman was shot by his brother Larry, who committed suicide afterwards. "It Doesn't Really Matter"...? I'm not so sure about that.

I forgot about 'California Love'. Kind of co-incidental as 2Pac passed away at the age of 25. Musically speaking, the number 25 seems to be not too good :o

The first American Top 40 appearance for Bryan Adams was not as a singer, but as a songwriter. With his then producer/songwriting partner Jim Vallance, they wrote the 1981 song 'Don't Let Him Know' for fellow Canadian group Prism, and in 1982 it reached US #39 ...

Jim Vallance was an original member of Prism (but left after their first album) and 'Don't Let Him Know' was their only US Top 40 hit.

In 1958, Valens' first single Come On, Let's Go only made it to #42 in the US. His 3rd release 'La Bamba' made it to #22.
In 1987, Los Lobos hit #21 with Come On, Let's Go and #1 with La Bamba

Did you know:....
On April 24, 1976, Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels offered the Beatles $3,000 - a deliberately paltry sum -if they would perform on his program together. He joked, "divide up any way you want. If you want to give less to Ringo, that's up to you."
John Lennon discussed the Saturday Night Live episode, as well as his relationship with McCartney, in a September 1980 interview for Playboy:
"Paul and I were together watching that show. He was visiting us at our place in the Dakota. We were watching it and almost went down to the studio, just as a gag. We nearly got into a cab, but we were actually too tired That was a period when Paul just kept turning up at our door with a guitar. I would let him in, but finally I said to him, 'Please call before you come over. It's not 1956 and turning up at the door isn't the same anymore. You know, just give me a ring.' He was upset by that, but I didn't mean it badly. I just meant that I was taking care of a baby all day and some guy turns up at the door. . . . But, anyway, back on that night, he and Linda walked in and he and I were just sitting there, watching the show, and we went, 'Ha-ha, wouldn't it be funny if we went down?' but we didn't."
Paul McCartney also remembered the event for an interview: " said, 'We should go down there. We should go down now and just do it.' It was one of those moments where we said, 'Let's not and say we did.' "
Just imagine if they actually went and performed.
Damn...

Did you know the only charting single by The Smiths to not make the UK Top 40 was That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore. It was the only single released from 1985's Meat is Murder, which was their only (original) album to reach #1 in the UK
From 1984-1988, The Smiths released 4 studio albums, and had 16 hit singles. Only 7 of those came from those 4 albums: The Smiths (1984), Meat is Murder (1985), The Queen is Dead (1986) and "Strangeways, Here We Come" (1987). The rest were all non-album singles, but did appear on various compilation albums the band released in that period: Hatful of Hollow (1984), Louder Than Bombs (1986) and The World Won't Listen (1987)

Here's some interesting trivia:
Boyzone are an Irish boy band who are a household name throughout Europe. They didn't fare quite as well in North America, where their lone hit single No Matter What reached #16 on the US Bubbling Under Chart (that's US #116, for those not in the know) and #51 in Canada in 1999.
With just 1 hit single in Canada, it was quite unexpected when their 1999 Greatest Hits album By Request was certified Gold by Music Canada (50,000 copies sold): It spent 31 weeks in the Canadian Chart, rising to a peak of #44.

Kelly Clarkson's 2015 hit The Heartbeat Song is the same as Jimmy Eat World's 2001 hit The Middle. I'm quite surprised a lawsit hasn't come out of this yet. If Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne can sue Sam Smith over similarities in a song, then anything can happen
The Heartbeat Song has become a hit in countries where The Middle did not chart. I'm sure the members of Jimmy Eat World could use the royalties lol

The song Birds Fly (Whisper to A Scream) by the British Band The Icicle Works was released in the US and Canada as Whisper to A Scream (Birds Fly). The original release featured a female spoken word intro that was removed when released in the US. The Canadian release retains the spoken word intro, but a major difference between the release in the US vs Canada was their American record label insisted the band drop "the" from their name.
- Birds Fly (Whisper to A Scream) by The Icicle Works originally peaked at UK #89 in 1983, then a re-release peaked at UK #52 in 1984
- Whisper to A Scream (Birds Fly) by Icicle Works peaked at #37 in the US in 1984

"Marcha Real", The Spanish National Anthem.
One of the oldest in the world National Anthems of the world. Though the "Marcha Real" has no lyrics, words have been written and used for it in the past. One version was used during Alfonso XIII's reign and another during the Francoist State; however, none of them were ever made official. The national anthem has been played without words since 1978, when the lyrics that had been approved by General Francisco Franco were abandoned.

Wednesday Morning, 3am, the 1964 debut album by Simon & Garfunkel, which featured an acoustic version of The Sound Of Silence, was originally a commercial failure, which led to the duo breaking up. The next year, the song started to gain popularity in certain states, leading to a remix of the song featuring electric guitars and drums to be released, without knowledge from the duo. When they learned of the song's success and eventual #1 peak in the US, they got back together and the rest is history!

One of the most confusing things in the early 80s was the Dutch novelty group Stars On 45 as in the UK, they were known as Starsound and their songs had different titles in different countries. They performed medleys of classic songs from the 60s and 70s set to a disco beat, and were best known for a 1981 Medley featuring Beatles songs which was a #1 hit in many parts of the world, including the US and Canada, the latter where it was the #1 song of 1981. Not only was this not their only hit, it was also proof that Disco didn't completely die in 1979 like everyone thought.
In 1981, they released an ABBA Medley in Holland titled More Stars, which was called Stars On 45 Volume 2 in the UK. The 12" version of the song began with a medley of 60s and 70s songs, and then led into the ABBA Medley. Due to the popularity of ABBA not being on the same scale in North America as it was in Europe, it was chosen that the single release for the US and Canadian market be the 60s/70s portion of the 12" single, and it was released in the US under the group name More Stars On 45 and in Canada under the group name Stars On. While it failed to reach the US Top 40, it did in Canada, which prompted their record label to release the ABBA Medley in Canada under the exclusive title "More Stars on 45 II"
Bonus Trivia: The US/Canada version of More Stars On 45 includes a cover of the chorus to the 1967 song Let's Go To San Francisco by The Flower Pot Men, which was a Top 5 hit in the UK, but failed to chart in the US and Canada. The ABBA Medley features covers of all well-known ABBA songs with the exception of Bang-A-Boomerang, which was only released as a single in France

Just to round out the Stars On 45 confusion, this one is a little easier to follow... but still confusing lol
Their first single was that Beatles medley in 1981. In Europe, it was released as Stars On 45, however in the US/Canada, while it's commonly known as just Medley or Medley I, in order to get the licensing rights to use the songs, the title of the song had to list all the songs used, so it's official US/Canadian release is titled Medley: Intro 'Venus' / Sugar Sugar / No Reply / I'll Be Back / Drive My Car / Do You Want to Know a Secret / We Can Work It Out / I Should Have Known Better / Nowhere Man / You're Going to Lose That Girl / Stars on 45 and still holds the record for the longest song title to chart on Billboard. It peaked at #2 in the UK and spent 1 week at #1 in the US. It's biggest success was in Canada where it spent 12 weeks at #1 and was the #1 single of 1981.
The ABBA medley as mentioned in the previous post was released as the group's second single in Europe, but due to the unexpected success of the Beatles Medley in North America, it was decided that the 2nd single for the US and Canadian market would be the remaining portion of Beatles songs as heard in the album version of the song. Again, do to licensing issues, all song titles are present in the title on the label of the 45, but in the charts, it showed up as just Medley II, and while it did chart, it failed to match the success of Medley I
Starsound - Stars on 45
-------------
Stars On 45 - Medley: Intro 'Venus' / Sugar Sugar / No Reply / I'll Be Back / Drive My Car / Do You Want to Know a Secret / We Can Work It Out / I Should Have Known Better / Nowhere Man / You're Going to Lose That Girl / Stars on 45
7Xl-myBdvLg
Stars On - Medley II: Stars On 45 / Good Day Sunshine / My Sweet Lord / Here Comes The Sun / While My Guitar Gently Weeps / Tax Man / A Hard Day's Night / Please Please Me / From Me To You / I Wanna Hold Your Hand / Stars On 45
-------------
Stars On 45 - Medley II: Stars On 45 / Good Day Sunshine / My Sweet Lord / Here Comes The Sun / While My Guitar Gently Weeps / Tax Man / A Hard Day's Night / Please Please Me / From Me To You / I Wanna Hold Your Hand / Stars On 45

Yes I did know that. And the fact that she came from such a wealthy "society" family caused her not to be taken seriously in some circles when she began her musical career. On s similar note, there was long standing urban legend that Linda Eastman McCartney was heir to the Eastman Kodak fortune. I believed it myself for some years. Not true. She came from an entirely different family of Eastmans. Her father and his family were all lawyers. And also extremely wealthy, like the Simons.

Say You, Say Me is a 1985 song performed by Lionel Richie, who wrote it for the film White Nights. It went on to peak at #1 in the US and Canada and won the 1986 Academy Award for Best Song, however it does not appear on the film's soundtrack. The reason for this was because Lionel was just coming off multi-platinum success with his 1983 album Can't Slow Down and Motown Records didn't want his first single after that success to appear on another record label. Re-issued copies of the soundtrack since have the song included as a bonus track
One of the singles from Can't Slow Down was Stuck On You which peaked at #3 in both the US and Canada, and peaked at #12 in the UK. 3 months after it was released, a British singer named Trevor Walters recorded a reggae version, and it out peaked Lionel's version in the UK at #9. While that version was not a hit in the US or Canada, and as much as I love Lionel's version, I actually kind of prefer Trevor's version more. It worked so well as a reggae song!

In 1981, Canadian singer Ian Thomas released a song he wrote called Hold On and to help promote it, he appeared on the sketch comedy series SCTV which starred his brother Dave Thomas. The single went on to peak at #28 in Canada, and while it failed to chart in the US, the SCTV appearance caught the attention of Carlos Santana who contacted Ian about recording a cover.
Santana's version was released in 1982 and peaked at #15 in the US and #4 in Canada. Ian has since joked that the Santana version paved his driveway. His original version has become somewhat obscure in Canada as since he wrote the song, whether radio stations play his version or the Santana version, it still meets Canadian Content requirements that radio stations must adhere to, so why not play the more successful version

The best-known version of "Unchained Melody" was recorded by the duo the Righteous Brothers for Philles Records in 1965. The lead vocal was performed solo by Bobby Hatfield, who later recorded other versions of the song credited solely to him. According to his singing partner Bill Medley, they had agreed to do one solo piece each per album. Both wanted to sing "Unchained Melody" for their fourth album, but Hatfield won the coin toss.

In 1981, they released Love Song, which became their third charting single in the UK where it peaked at UK #47. Despite not reaching the UK Top 40, the single saw the Top 40 in Australia (#17), Canada (#38) and Sweden (#16). In 1992, it was re-released in a slightly remixed form in the UK to coincide with their greatest hits album Glittering Prize 81/92 and it peaked at UK #6

Tony Burrows, the prolific English pop singer and recording artist, as a prolific session musician, he was involved in several transatlantic hit singles throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, most of which were one-hit wonders, including "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" by Edison Lighthouse, "United We Stand" by Brotherhood of Man, "My Baby Loves Lovin'" by White Plains, "Gimme Dat Ding" by the Pipkins and "Beach Baby" by the First Class. During 1970, four singles by four different acts with whom he performed all charted at or near the top of the UK Singles Chart and additionally reached the top 20 in the United States, while a fifth single under his own name ("Melanie Makes Me Smile") reached the lower ends of the top 100 in the United States and Canada.
