Subject: It's Senior Prom time!...remember your Prom weekend?...care to share?
Written By: hot_wax on 05/06/05 at 10:59 pm
Proms are in fill swing at this time of the year from Coast to Coast and since we span over 40 years of Proms in our Colony, I thought it would interesting to share some of your "good, bad...or ugly" memories of your Prom night and weekend...have things changed over time? do East Coast city school Proms differ from the Mid-west, Southern or West coast schools?...I don't know? lets kick it around a bit!
Mine? it was in 1965 and held at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ. A lot of preparation was done on my part...I rented a white Tuxedo sport coat and the excessories all for $24.50, borrowed my cousin Joe's 1961 black Cadillac, bought a white carnation for my lepel and a wrist corsage of white and pink roses for my date...a shave and a shower and I was off to pick up my date...
My date, she wore the hottest thing in dresses at the time...it looked like a wedding cake with all of it's ruffles and puffy under slips, she made a lot of noise when she moved...but she was beautiful and was 1st. runner up as Prom Queen ( the Class President was crowned Queen...sounded like a set-up to me).
I'm going to stop for now and see if this topic takes on a life...if so, then we'll go with the flow...it can get interesting if we get down to the nitty griity of what Prom night did to our futures!

My prom night was similar to the ending scene of 'Carrie'. There were objects flying everywhere, people getting electrocuted...oh it was horrible. Oh, wait did I just imagine that? Probably, seeing that I didn't actually go to my prom or 'ball' as we call it.

Yeah! it sounds like you were pissed off that you didn't go to your "Ball", sorry about that! By the response to the topic there must be dozens in the colony that didn't go to their Prom...they could say something on that too, if they want.
I asked Cat this also, " there might be a story in "why not?", do you want to elaborate?" or should I just take your "Carrie" scenario and assume that you were jilted at the last moment is why you didn't go...Yes? No?

Not much of a story. I didn't have a date and didn't want to go "stag". Looking back, I probably should have.

YEAY that's it! no wait! maybe the Hummer wasn't invented yet... it's your prom you pick what you want " your wish is my command on your night". Let me know the details on where the party going to be held and on what date and time.
I hope you accept my invitaion and prepare yourself for time night of your life, we will eat drink and dance the night away you will remember this Prom night the rest of your lives and when people ask you about your Senior Prom you can tell them in detail about it.
So I hope you accept my invitation and let me know as soon as possible so that I can get started on my part to get things together for my Prom Date....the beautiful you, CatWomen.
Use your imagination, do what you would have done to perpare for that night, but remember we're going back in time to your Senior year...ok? let me know. This sould be cool!

My prom's in a couple of weeks. However, I go to a private, "progressive" institution, so the prom is no big deal at all. We didn't even have one until about a decade ago. Both of the 2 girls that I wanted to go with got dates before I asked them, so I'm just going with my boys (a bunch of us are going stag). However, the after-prom party should be off the hook. Not to mention the after-after-prom, where a bunch of us are going up to the Hamptons for a nonstop party weekend.

Yo! Charlie, after the Prom is what it's all about! but work that room first man! going stag is an open invataion to as many chicks you lay your rap on. This is the weekend that girls "want" to party more than you do so don't disappoint them. Your private school principle was probably a "Dead Head" and partied half his college years away and now wants to "play down" the best time of your school life...screw the hypocrisy! you and your buddies might go alone but I guarantee if you "act cool" and tell the girls what they want to hear you'll all leave with a Babes and that "after-after" party at Hamptons will be looking better and better.
You got to get back to us and fill us in...but not all the details...keep us guessing!

Ok kiddo! I was working all the arrangements for our Prom weekend with the help of a few of the other couples that had some good ideas to make this the the best Prom weekend anyone ever had!
Well...you and DC are coming with us to our Prom, so mark this date down, Friday May 28, 1965. First I'll pick up my date, JoAnne, at her house because her mom wants to take lots of pictures of her daughter in her prom dress, a dress her mother helped pick out for her I think when she was still in Communion Class...(it reminded me of birthday cake), all kidding aside, she is beautiful and is in the running to be UHS Prom Queen of Class 1965, so you know her and her mom went all out for this night, and me? I'm goin my $24.50 rented white tux sport coat and want nothing to do with being Prom King...it's not in my character for that nonsence.
After a half hour of the picture ordeal we'll make it over to your house about 6:00 PM to pick you and DC up, we are going to ride in style too, because I borrowed my cousin Joe's Cadillac for this weekend. We'll have a camera and take loads of pictures of you and DC in your Prom's best, I'm sure with your good taste you'll look like a Princess and DC like an Adonis, you'll have everyone at the banquet wondering who is this "Classy babe" and the Dude she's with? the guy's are going to hit on you all night, so be prepared for action and watch out for your man because the girl's are going to be all over DC also! you know how it is with there's new "meat" in the market everyone wants to sample a taste! so go with the flow and have fun with it. Yes, we'll take tons of pictures...who knows? you might look you at them in 2005 and remember "The night I went to my virtual Prom".
I'll get back to you with more details of what we're going to do that night and Saturday night and Sunday!

(Thursday, 5/27th) RING!RING!...RING!RING!...HELLO Cat? this is Wax, I'm calling you to let you know that tomorrow is the big night and I know you'll look terrific and in what ever gown or dress you decide on to wear to the Ball. JoAnne says to bring a change of clothing too! "peddle pushers", "boat neck" sweater and "Pixie" boots is what some of the girls will be wearing after the Prom. Yeah! the Prom will end about 11:00 PM or so and after all that formal stuff, we are all going over to Staten Island for a couple hours to bar hop around for a while and finally wind up at DeNino's Pizzeria on Forrest Ave. This is where the best pizza in the world is made, the pies are baked in a brick oven the sause is seasoned perfectly for anyone's taste, hot and crispy crusted pies to die for, you just can't eat one slice...I'm good for at least three or four, don't be ashame to pack away three or four slices yourself, they're that good! and I like to wash them down with one of his specialty drinks of the day, a "Singapor Sling" or a "Zombie"...Brewski's are alway's good too, or a Coke! (the drinking age is 18 in NY, don't worry, we know our limits and you'll be safe.)
After that we just might take a quick ride over the Outer Bridge Crossing, we'll be close to Sandy Hook to take a stroll on the beach, I'll have some blankets also so we can sit and sober up re-hash the nights events or just "groove" on the Stars and watch the sun rise or whatever else fits your fancy...we won't tell!
So get a good nights sleep, warm up your dancing moves and I'll see you and DC tomorrow! Bye bye! H W

How about this dress?

Only $23.84 at Montgomery Ward's. It is last year's fashion but I think I will look like either Audrey Hepburn or Jackie Kennedy.

Hi Wax, everything sounds fine. I'm wearing a formal "Neru jacket" and a white shirt with no collar. No tie. After dinner and dancing, we can take the girls to my dad's boat (an O'Day 25) - he has given permission - and sit on deck looking at the stars and watching the submarine races. Or, if the girls are willing, you can have the main cabin and Cat and I will retire to the V berth. By the way, dad keeps a nice little bar on board, and gave me the key. I think Cat's dress is gorgous. Can't wait to get her out of it. ;)

Wow! Cat you know how to make an appearance! it looks like you've done this a thousand times before! OK, now that the applauding has calm down, let's go inside and work the Ballroom and check out the scene. A lot of formal people want to personally meet you Catwomen and give you a warm welcome to the Class of 1965 UHS Senior Prom...
Well, I do say "you know how to do the protocol meeting thing" you and DC put on the heirs pretty convincing at the receiving line, like a couple of Politicians...cool and smooth! you've done this before, Right?
C'mon, let's cruise the room before we make it to our table. The band is not that bad, they've been playing the top 10 list songs so far, I see Dickie and Sharon on the dance floor and there he goe's, he loves doing the Monkey and dig Sharon, if she Shimmies a little harder she's going to fall out of her dress...Go! Sharon go! oh! almost! Ha! Ha! Hey Cat don't let me stop you and DC, it looks like you can't wait to get out there and shake your thing, so go for it, me and JoAnne will be at our table over there on the other side next to the dance floor...table number "1"...of course! Look JoAnne, Cat almost pulled DC's arm out of it's socket getting him to the floor and what's she doing? I never saw that dance before? What JoAnne? I can hardly hear you over the music, did you say?...the Electric Slide? I never heard of it!...yet!

Actually, I NEVER have to pull Carlos' arm to get me out on the dance floor-especially if they are playing a waltz. So, can you ask the band to play a waltz?

Well, I don't think the band has ever heard of it. It is called "Once Upon a December". There is another song (not a waltz) that I don't think the band has ever heard of either called "La Isla Bontia". But any waltz will do.

I don't want to beat a dead horse with this old post but since it's that time of the year again for high school proms maybe some of the new colonists might want to share some tibits of their prom night and weekend.
Even now when I see those limosines driving by with a gang of kids in it going to Senior Proms it stirs up great memories of my Prom and I reminisce that week-end. It's their most memorable affair of their lives, most are good, but some are bad ones, so I'm draging the post out and dusting it off again and see if anyone wants to add their little something to it for the fun of it.

I was barred from mine. Actually about 15 of us were, so we just went clubbing instead.
I did however go to a prom when I first moved to the U.S. Took my buddy's sister.. I had no interest in her and she didn't particularly like me, but she didn't have a date and I volunteered.. after all.. I was 2 years out of high school but the same age as they were, I was all about regaling the hotties with tales of the outside world. ;D
That was a pretty cool night, that was when I had the Camaro from my cousin Rick so we took that, admittedly I spent more time showing off the fact that I was driving a Camaro than I did making sure she had a nice time.

I was barred because the faculty knew me and my buddies would all turn up wasted and cause trouble.
My Prom was in England.. it was the third one they had at the school.

Not really. It's still not a big deal there yet. I think the first time my high school had a prom was in '99 or something, before then it just didn't happen.
Things work slightly different and as such, the end of school is staggered. You finish classes around March and come back for exams in June. I elected to get drunk in March and not sober up until July. It worked ok.

I went to 3 Proms. My Jr. and Sr. Prom and my boyfriends Sr. Prom.
My Jr. Prom was amazing. We had it at The Pierre Hotel in Manhattan.
Boyfriend's Sr. Prom wasn't very memorable, except my dress was very uncomfortable.
My Sr. Prom was a nightmare! We took a "cruise to nowhere" around Manhattan. The food was excellent, the music was great, my dress was fabulous and my boyfirend was a complete ass!! ;D
He decided he wanted to hang out with his friends and basically left me alone all night. Luckily best friend and her date were totally cool and stuck by me. I found out later my boyfriend was trying to hook-up with his friend's sister who also happened to be at the Prom.

What a bummer! you were nice to only call him an ass. The night cruise sounded cool, I haven't heard of a prom affair held on the boat before. I hope you dumped the ass, although you do have good memories of your fabulous dress, so all is not lost.
It seems your Junior Prom night will hold that place in your heart forever.

What a bummer! you were nice to only call him an ass. The night cruise sounded cool, I haven't heard of a prom affair held on the boat before. I hope you dumped the ass, although you do have good memories of your fabulous dress, so all is not lost.
It seems your Junior Prom night will hold that place in your heart forever.
;D ;D
I'm sure I called him much worse after the Prom.
I went to a small Catholic/private school on Staten Island (NY) with many rich girls, so the Proms were always extravagant. It seems like every year the Sr. class tried to outdo the last class.
And no, I didn't dump him...but I did go to the Bahamas with my girlfriends after graduation and there I met my future husband. I dumped him when I got home. ;D

I was thinking of you today kiddo! I felt bad you and was hoping you dumped the ass...and you did! good for you! and good for you for meeting your true soul mate in the Bahamas. Just think, if the ass didn't do what he did, your destiny in life would be completely different...you see what Proms can do!!

I can, Oct. 3 will be 27 years. Prom night was a disaster though. I didn't want to go at all but my Girlfriend, now wife,
wanted to. The bad part of the night was, while all the other prom goers were heading down the shore afterwards I
was taking her home. She had an 11:00 curfew I had to take her home before the prom was over. Her sister, who was
2 years younger, was able to go to the shore. go figure.
On a side note, her sister is still married to her prom date also, 26 years.
Edit to add; Happy Anniversary :)

27 years married, that's very good too, I know it's not easy, but you have a good women by your side all this time and I think you have her father to thank for that when he put you and her to the test with that 11:00 curfew and you both passed it. If your anything like me, you still see your wife as the prom date you married 27 years ago.

lol Well...I didn't really date much in high school, my last two years (Jr. and Sr.) were spent at the JVS (Joint Vocational School) which was about a half hour drive away from my "home" school and it had it's own prom.
Sophomore year I was friends with a guy in high school band that was a year older, so he wanted to take me to his Jr. prom, He wanted to pick out my prom dress and everything. lol I can't remember exactly why we didn't actually go, I think his mom didn't let him.
Jr. year I was supposed to go with a guy that I was friends with (different guy), however he wanted me to be his girlfriend too, and I just didn't feel the same way about him, so we ended up not going to any of our proms (the JVS prom, his "home" school prom, nor my "home" school prom. It was a shame because I really was looking forward to going. *shrugs her shoulders*
Sr. prom, my mom made me break up with my boyfriend one month before prom. Why? Because after graduation, he wanted to move to California and take me with him. (We lived in Ohio at the time.) And she wasn't prepared to let me go yet. So I decided that I was going to go whether or not I had a date. So I went to the JVS prom and hung out with my friends from my Data Processing class. My ex-boyfriend showed up with another girl and that was a treat, but there wasn't anything I could do about it really.
I did not have the tradition poofy 80s prom gown, I wore black. lol I do not know why. lol
I was not allowed to go to my "home" school prom, it was for couples only. So, since I did not have a date, I did not go. Oh well. Life goes on, doesn't it?
When I got home from my JVS prom, my brother told me that my dad was having chest pains so my mom took him to the hospital and they had admitted him. This was prior to the days of cell phones so getting ahold of me wasn't going to be easy, and they didn't want to interrupt my prom so they decided to wait to tell me until I got home. I wasn't happy about that decision naturally.
Here is a picture of me at my JVS prom in 1987.

Yeah, well he might have been a bit "poofy", I dunno, I was never a good judge of that. I think he just saw a magazine that some girl in his class was reading and he liked the dress that the model was wearing, so he showed it to me. He didn't like *insist* that I wear it or one similar, but it was kind of an unusual request. As I recall it was black and white and was a long 80s type prom dress. I thought it was...unusual...that his mother wouldn't allow him to go to prom.

My son's prom was last night, and I must say I was little jealous. I went to my prom and my father let me
drive his Ford LTD. The father of The Boy's girlfriend let him drive his Buick Grand National. I had to have
my date home by 11:00 pm, The Boy isn't home yet and he won't be until Sunday night, he did call me
from the shore though. They did look nice and when he comes home I'll have him post his pictures.

Hi Bookmistress, Sorry it took this long to get back, I read your other reply too and you sure had a lot of drama with these proms. Not going with mommas boy was a blessing in diguise, that dress thing with him was a red flag, do you know what he's doing today?

Whistledog, I hear you, except for my Senior Prom I didn't want to be bothered with anything to do with school dances either. The last dance that I was suppose to go to was my 9th grade Junior High Prom with Dodie but the day before the dance Mrs. Kaufman gave me 3 days detention because I was walking the wrong way down a one way hall way, I told her to go to hell and the detention turned into a 1 week suspension, and was banned from the dance, I told Dodie to go, but she didn't want to. I screwed up her night, but I lucked out and couldn't go!
When I got my car in I didn't want to be in school any longer than I had to also, in my senior year I cut 45 days.

No worries about not getting back to me right away. I have lots of patience.
Yeah, I think you are right about not going to prom with the guy that wanted to pick out my dress. I didn't keep in touch with him after he graduated (and I went to a different school - the JVS the next year). I haven't talked to him in over 20 years now.
Yeah, my senior year boyfriend did go to California (with the girl he took to prom) and they stayed there for maybe a year or so, then they moved back to our hometown in Ohio and he's still there as far as I know. I. myself, finally moved away 15 years later. lol And I don't want to move back. ;D Our 20 year high school reunion is coming up in July, but they want $60 a couple (basically their letter read "We know everyone is on a budget, so we decided to keep this cheap. We want to buy several kegs of beer and have an open bar and some appetizers for the evening." Well, neither my husband and I drink because of the insulin we take, so we'd be paying for everyone else to drink. ::) Oh well. Nobody that I've kept in touch with is going and everybody else, I wasn't really very good friends with. So, they aren't getting our $60. ;D

We saw some photos for the Jr. prom at our local high school about a week or two ago. Some of the dresses the girls were wearing were quite revealing. :o :o Carlos said, "I don't know if I would want my daughter to wear something like that to a Jr. prom."

I never attended any dances either. I find that the prom often seperates high schoolers into two classes. The upper\popular crowd can't imagine anyone not going. The poorer\unpopular crowd couldn't imagine going. HS reunions are similar. I was the only one of the lower classes who attended my 10 year reunion which, while not felt unwelcome, felt out of place. Getting back to Prom, getting a date is the least of a poor person's problems. It's all the expense which makes it prohibited.
Echo Nomad, I agree, today the expences for just the basics are costly and the added costs for the bells and whistles to have gotten way out of hand for these proms. There was small group of kids in this area rented one of those luxury stretch limos for their prom and weekend for $5,000 saying they did to have safe weekend...yeah right! I borrowed my cousins car for our prom!

Hi Bookmistress4ever, great prom pictures! they'er all beautiful people enjoying one of the best nights of their lives and will remember every moment of their prom nigth and weekend 40 years from now as clear as if it happen last week.
Thanks for dusting off the topic again, let's see what take's flight this year bringing it to the new members for some of their prom experiences. It's cool to read and see photos of todays kids having the time of their lives, but on the flip side of this affair there might be replies from dis-heartened people who had a less fortunate prom night, hopeing they'll have the courage to share their bad experience, it might make them feel better that they weren't alone in not enjoying their prom weekend.

I attended prom during my junior and senior years, though the first is the one I remember best. A female acquaintance asked me to go with her after a mutual friend had to back out at the last minute...literally. I remember having to line up a tuxedo for the big event the day before, and lucked out when the shops had one in my size! I wasn't exactly a lady's man in those days (I'm still not! *L*), so the fact that anyone would want to go anywhere with me was nothing short of a revelation.
We had a good time hanging out with her friends who were cool to me, even though they were a bit older. We ate a *very* late dinner at an expensive restaurant, where one of our friends tried to pick up a waitress who was clearly out of his league. Ah, memories are made of this...and clams on the half shell. 8)
My mother-in-law recently unearthed some photos taken of yours truly and my senior year date, who is now the love of my life (everybody saw "awwww"). Seeing them now, I can't believe I was that thin! While we had a pleasant experience, it was awkward since we didn't know each other well at the time.

Thanks for sharing your stories. You should think about posting your prom pics (and if you don't want to share the face, maybe block out the face to protect the innocent) but leave the hairstyles since that is also one of the defining styles of prom pagentry...the hair-do! lol

Are you and Quirk are both 95rs like me? This is exactly what I see. Most of the gals in my class already looked like they were 30 year old secretaries! ;D I think that started to change in the late 90's when the fashions went from more grungy\gangster clothes and more to the Britney effect.
yes....that is totally how it was! LOL! The girls nowadays look SO darn young...it's scary! I mean..even if you watch a movie that is from the 80's to the mid 90's...the "high school" girls look so incredibly grown up! ;D

yes, indeed. What year did you graduate?
I graduated in 1996. I thought it was a pretty good time for high school, too. :)

I didn't go either. My best guy friend asked me...but I decided I didn't want to really spend all that money.

yes..it really was. Even though it wasn't ALL that long ago...it seems like ages nowadays. I loved everything from like middle school to high school. I must be feeling quite nostalgic tonight...as I am listening to some early 90's songs. :D

It really didn't seem all that long ago to me, either. Sometimes it even feels like yesterday. :)

The subject of prom has come up again (as it was a plot point in the t.v. series "Glee" this week.) Any new stories to share?
I would love to have another "virtual prom" I could even photoshop people into promwear. The sky is the limit. I'd probably have a better time at a prom online where I can pretend that I can dance, rather then at a real prom where I know I can't. lol
Anyone interested?

Youngone is going to the Prom this year, a lot of kids in his special needs class are, so we got together and rented a sped bus to take them, but it is a stretch Cadillac Escalade to take the kids in style. All of the sudden being on the sped bus won't be such a bad thing. :)

Yes, that is Mrs. Hot Wax, the first met her in catechism when we were 8 years old, and because of our last names had the same initials we went through Jr High and high school home rooms together. I'd say she grew on me all those years, and after married 42 years, she still makes my blood boil.
