Subject: Your Favorite Toys

Written By: CatwomanofV on 11/20/23 at 4:44 pm

This is a subject that was inspired by an article in the Washington Post that asked some of the writers what their favorite toy was when they were going up.

Mine probably was my little blue bike-my first 2-wheeler. I got that for my 7th birthday. When I woke up, it was in the living room waiting for me. My sister held it as I sat on it and she wheeled me to my mother's bedroom to show her my new bike. I don't think my feet hit the floor.

I had wait until my dad put the training wheels on it to ride it. I felt so proud when the training wheels came off a few weeks later. But I have to say that the training wheels made a great kick stand-and I didn't have to kick it.

When we moved a few years later, my bike was the first thing I wanted to bring with me (and my stuff animals but that is another story). Where we moved to, there was a small parking lot at the end of my road and on the weekends when there were no cars parked, I would try to do tricks on the bike like I saw them do in the circus. Of course my bike wasn't made for that but that didn't stop me from trying.

One time, I went biking alone along a path. The fender had come off of the bike long before this but my pant leg got caught in the chain. There I was in the middle of nowhere and I was stuck (short of taking off my pants but I wasn't going to do that). Someone came walking down the path. This stranger was so kind to help me get my pant leg out for the chain. (Of course now days, strangers are scary.)  I don't know if I walked the bike home or probably rolled up the leg.

I had that bike for years but it shrunk. I really don't understand how it got so small.

So what was your favorite toy?

I must admit I had several. Not sure where to start.

I do remember that some of them were stuffed.

That kept changing every few month as I grew. It could be a matchbox car or a Lego Spaceship. Later it became the Commodore C64 with all it's games. It's really hard to say what my favorite toy was.

Over my childhood years, my favourite toys, in no particular order, a Scalextric (car racing) set, a bicycle, which came useful for riding to school and long distance journeys on holidays and weekends, and a train set, of which my parents sold on for me, before my own son could get to play with it.

...plus Lego.

One of my favorites was a 2XL talking robot from Mego.

I had some Lego sets too, that I loved to play with. (I actually still have them packed away; they’ve just been dormant for the past 30 years.)

I had a schoolfriend who was given a chemistry set, I wanted one, but my parents would not let me.

When I was in 2nd grade, this boy who I liked was into Hot Wheels. So that is what I asked Santa to bring me. He did. Except I had to wait until my father and brother (who was in high school) were done playing with them before I could.  ::)

I concur, my favorite toy(s) kept changing.  But I can maybe come up with a few that I really liked.

It just occurred to me that when I was 7-ish we (me and my slightly older brother) had this set of pose-able rubberized figures of Gumby and Pokey TV characters.  Cheap toys, but somehow we spent hours playing with them.  It didn't hurt that we watched Gumby and Pokey on a regular basis on TV.

Cheap toys - go figure.

I had those two as well! O0

Actually, the ones that I had looked similar to these, but made of similar material.

With toys being sold on eBay, this thread should be changed to Favorite Toy$ ?

No thank you; I do not wish to sell mine.

In my case, all my toys from my younger days have all been long gone.

I donated some of my toys after I was a certain age. They were in decent condition, so other children could use them.

I had these figurines when My Father was working during the late 70's and early 80's.
