Subject: AITA Thread

Written By: LyricBoy on 10/01/23 at 5:36 pm

The Reddit boards have a sub-board named “AITA”, where the person posting a thread asks the group “Am I The A**h***?” (Thus the AITA moniker). Thought that I’d start one here.

So here is my situation. AITA?

I am on a Facebook page for my high school alumni, and somebody posted the obituary of a guy, we’ll call him George. Various posters fawned over “George” with posts like “Such a nice guy”, “George was always the life of our school dances”, and one that was most revolting to me “George was a very kind guy.” These posts conjured visions of a guy who helped little old ladies cross the street and shoveled the snow off their sidewalks in the winter.

Well I think the players here at InThe00s know that I call ‘em as I see ‘em, so I reminded the Facebook group that kind ol’ “George” spent 2 years in the Pennsylvania slam after being convicted, as a 36 year old, for raping a 10 year old girl who was the daughter of one of his (former) friends. >:(

Being ever so tactful, I decided to NOT remind the group that George’s twin brother was expelled from our alma mater for, *ahem*, “whipping it out” in study hall. :o This was back in the 70s when that sort of thing was considered to be out of line. :P. But that was his brother, and my recollection is they were both dirt bags. But I left his bro out of it.

Anyway the board is now in an uproar over my “insensitive” post.

So I ask the fine members of this board… AITA?  ???

Of course you are the a**h***. Aren't you always?  ;) :D ;D ;D

Ok, j/k.

I think people think that you should never speak ill of the dead. Maybe some of those people knew him better than you and maybe he had changed in his later days. There may be a lot here that you are not seeing. It could also be that they only remember the good things and not the things that you remember. It is really hard to see all the angles from where I am sitting.

BTW, good topic but I am moving it to the TTT.

I think people think that you should never speak ill of the dead.

Normally I subscribe to that, and in my day I’ve dealt with all sorts of shady characters, including one guy (long deceased) whose name used to come up every now and then regarding Jimmy Hoffa’s disappearance. (The guy actually recommended me for the job I have now.)

But raping a 10 year old? I have to draw the line somewhere.

I have a coworker whose (now ex) boyfriend was sentenced to a 25-51 year stint for raping a girl from the time she was 5 years old until she was 10.  My coworker testified at the sentencing as to what a “great guy” he was. Apparently there is not a clear standard on what defines a “great guy”.

This brutally honest obituary went viral a few years ago.

Leslie Ray ‘Popeye’ Charping was born in Galveston on November 20, 1942 and passed away January 30, 2017, which was 29 years longer than expected and much longer than he deserved.

At a young age, Leslie quickly became a model example of bad parenting combined with mental illness and a complete commitment to drinking, drugs, womanizing and being generally offensive. Leslie enlisted to serve in the Navy, but not so much in a brave & patriotic way but more as part of a plea deal to escape sentencing on criminal charges.."

Leslie’s hobbies included being abusive to his family, expediting trips to heaven for the beloved family pets and fishing, which he was less skilled with than the previously mentioned. Leslie’s life served no other obvious purpose, he did not contribute to society or serve his community and he possessed no redeeming qualities besides quick whited sarcasm which was amusing during his sober days.

With Leslie’s passing he will be missed only for what he never did; being a loving husband, father and good friend.

Leslie’s passing proves that evil does in fact die and hopefully marks a time of healing and safety for all.

If the idea of speaking ill of the dead disturbs you, Charpings daughter, the obit’s author, assures you you’re fortunate to miss the point.

“I am happy for those that simply do not understand, this means you had good parent(s) – please treasure what you have,” the woman told CNN affiliate KTRK in a statement.

“I apologize to anyone that my father hurt and I felt it would have been offensive to portray him as anything other than who he was,” she also said. “This obituary was intended to help bring closure because not talking about domestic violence doesn’t make it go away!”

As Cat says people often say you shouldn’t speak ill of the dead. Though if someone had done what you described perhaps I would instead follow “if you can’t say anything nice, say nothing”. You don’t say how long ago the guy was in prison, but occasionally a leopard can change its spots.

btw LB I notice that you often have connections to all sorts of famous/infamous people

I never figured my degrees to Kevin Bacon. But I do have:

3 degrees from Rudolf Hess
1 degree from Little Richard
3 degrees from Volodymyr Zelenskyy
2 degrees from Leonid Brezhnev
2 degrees from Jock Yablonski
1 degree from Muhammad Ali

Well let’s see:

Rudolf Hess: Way back when, my Dad did business with Rudy’s brother. Brother represented a company that sold industrial furnaces.

Little Richard: Back in the 90s I was standing right behind him in line at an airport counter at Picksburgh Airport. The lady asked for him to produce identification and he was incensed.  ;D

Volodomyr Zelenskyy: Back in the early 2000s I was a consultant for a manufacturer; we met with an American agent for the Ukrainian oligarch, Ihor Kolomoisky. We suspected money laundering was likely, and declined to do business with them. Kolomoisky was Zelensky’s political sponsor when he was running for President. Ihor is now in jail awaiting charges on money laundering; funny how that worked out.

Leonid Brezhnev: A guy who I partnered up in the transportation business on a few deals used to be a steel union delegate (and a card carrying Communist,I saw his card) back in the 1970s. On the wall in his office is a photo of him hamming it up with ol’ Leonid at some sort of “Workers Congress” thing that was held in Russia. Since then my buddy has reformed and is a staunch capitalist.

Jock Yablonski: My cousin worked with him in the year before he was assassinated. Cuz was really moving up in the ranks, and stood a very good chance of being the head of the United Mineworkers. But then the worst thing that could happen to somebody striving to be in charge of an organization like that, happened to him. He became a born again Christian which was sort of incompatible with being the head of a corrupted institution. :P

Muhammad Ali: He and I once shared a puddle-jumper airplane ride from a Picksburgh to South Bend Indiana back in ‘96. He was on his way back home (Southwest Michigan) from the torch ceremony at the ‘96 Summer Olympics.

Speaking of boxers, I have two degrees from legendary boxer Sonny Liston. A older coworker of mine when I was in the steel business, Stan Howlett, was whipped in three rounds back in 1954 by Sonny. Stan was undefeated before that fight, and was expected to beat the hell out of Sonny. Instead, it turned out to be Stan’s last fight.  Stan was the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet, and was probably the most beloved worker at Granite City Steel. About 10 years after the Howlett-Liston fight, Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay) beat Liston in a fight that some allege was fixed by the Mob.  :-X

Britney Spears: That one is a little too recent for me to share details. Let’s just say that for a year or so, Jamie worked with my company. I had always hoped that we could have finagled getting Britney to attend our big annual company shindig in Picksburgh, but it was not to be. :\'(

I wouldn't count Little Richard or Muhammad Ali. You just happened to be at the same place at the same time.

But, I am 2 degrees from every pres from Gerald Ford to George H.W. Bush. The guy who used to worked in the office next to me, used to work at the White House. On his "I Love Me Wall", he had a pic of him with each of the presidents. I have to say, that was one impressive "I Love Me Wall."

Well I should still still credit for three degrees of Muhammad Ali due to my coworker Stan Howlett losing to Sonny Liston, who lost to Cassius Clay.  ;)

A buddy of mine, when he was a teenager, was driving his car in Michigan when he ran into then-Congressman Gerald Ford’s vehicle. Does that count for anything? ???

I also have three degrees from pretty much anybody who played on Leave it to Beaver. My uncle was a friend of actor Burt Mustin before he started his acting career. 8)
