Subject: Tinnitus

Written By: Philip Eno on 08/23/21 at 2:35 pm

"Tinnitus is the name for hearing noises that are not caused by an outside source. The main symptom of tinnitus is hearing a noise, such as ringing or buzzing, that is not caused by an outside source. Trying to stay relaxed and distracting yourself from the sounds you hear can help with tinnitus. Talking therapies may help if this does not work. It's not always clear what causes tinnitus. It's often linked with hearing loss, other conditions like Ménière's disease, anxiety or depression." - nhs.uk

For the last several years my tinnitus has got worse (I have had seek medical advice). For me, it is a constant high pitched tone. But more recently, it has got worse, a second tone, deeper in tone, that made it difficult to hear talking on television, and a third which gave me one almighty headache.

On speaking with my doctor, she recommended avoiding cheese and chocolate, and since then my "second and third" tinnitus has not affected me. Now I am trying out a new idea for cutting out tea (which contains caffeine) for a month to see on any improvement. Meantime I still suffer with my original tone, which started after an enjoyable Christmas holiday with a close friend, with one night of karaoke (loud noise?) and now reflecting on my previous employments that could had been in a noisy environment, or a lifetime of cinema watching where some films were in Dolby Stereo.

Are there other tinnitus sufferers out there?

One of my all time favorite rock stars, Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople, is a serious tinnitus sufferer. It put a halt to his still flourishing career a few years back, but he is working towards improvement.

Way back in the dark ages when I was in the service, I worked in the communication center (comm center). We sent and received messages electronically LONG before email. We had to hold all those messages for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, we had to destroy the messages.

Enter the "pulper." It was this HUGE, SUPER LOUD machine that had a little slit on top that you shoved only a handful of messages in. (If you put more-it would jam-think of a shredder.) Underneath was a burlap bag that was tied to the machine. The idea was that once the messages became pulp, it would be caught in the burlap bag and when you were done you untied the bag and then brought it out to the dumpster and got rid of all the pulp and then retied the bag on the machine. That was how it was SUPPOSED to work. How it REALLY worked: It is was in this tiny closet so it was REALLY SUPER LOUD and you had to wear ear muffs-the kind they use on flight lines. But because the room was so tiny, they really didn't help much. The bag was NEVER tied too good so it was pretty much "snowing" in the closet from all the pulp. You had to wear a dust mask. It was a terrible job and no one wanted to do it. The supervisor was "kind" enough to make sure he was never on the rotation to do the job.  ::)  So all of us lowly slobs ended up doing it.

So, I ended up with tinnitus thanks to this "wonderful" job.  ::)  I don't normally hear the high pitched sound-but I do hear it from time to time. Most of the time, mine sounds like crickets or cicadas. My left ear is louder than my right. The funny thing is, it doesn't affect my hearing. I can hear really well-even through all that noise. And the quieter the room, the louder it is.

My mother had Ménière's disease and there are a few times when I have dizzy spells that I thought I might have it. But, I don't have the hearing loss that is associated with it. So, I don't know.

And yes, it does drive me CRAZY!!!! I have tried acupuncture and massage. So far, neither worked. I'm still hopeful that I can find a solution.

I was never supplied with earplugs, it was not on offer during 1980s.

...and to further report, with various situations last night, I did have a cup of camomile tea, and briefly this morning on waking, I felt an extra tone of tinnitus, but has gone now. So, for me tea is an avoidance.

On one aspect on this, how often do you drink camomile tea?

It is on my "rotation." I have all sorts of different tea flavors-caffeinated and decafe/herbal. I will usually have 2 to 3 caffeinated in the morning and then in the afternoon/evening, I will switch and have about 2 decafe/herbal. I have 3 teas that have camomile in it-one is Pure Camomile (which is what I am drinking now), one is Nightly Calm, and one is Camomile, Honey & Vanilla. I may have one of these a day-sometimes none. It all depends.  But, I never have more than one of those three on the same day.

I get the ringing in my ears sometimes. I don't think it's Tinnitus though. I made up the silliest superstition! Lol. Ringing in the ears means someone is talking about you. You have to say the alphabet for as long as your ear is ringing. And then when the ringing stops, you have to pick the last letter of the alphabet you said right when the ringing stopped. That alphabetical letter is the first letter of the name of the person who was talking about you.  ;D

I am speaking of serious tinnitus here, and no silly superstitions can cure it.

Well, have you been to your clinic? There must be a cure for it. Sorry you are going through that.

Yes, several times, especially a specialist unit in a major hospital. At this precise moment of time, there is no known cure for it. My approach to it is to 'prevent' it, working out any form of allergy.

I hope you get cured from it, I've never had it but hear it's very bad.

Before I used to drink at least three to four cups of tea a day, it would be black due to a milk allergy, to compensate I would have honey to add a taste to it. I am now wondering could it be honey that could be causing my condition. At the moment, I am halfway through a tea embargo, to see how or if it can show any change to the tinnitus.

The only things I like in my tea are water and the tea bag. I don't use any sugar, milk, or honey. I used to drink it with milk in my younger days. And I will put honey in it if I am not feeling well.

Over the next few weeks I will be looking into herbal teas.

When not feeling well, we have always said, drink honey and lemon with a drop of whiskey. If very unwell, just have the drink without the honey and lemon.

Just gave Carlos some Ginger and Lemon tea because his stomach isn't feeling right today.

We had gone through life having Ginger as a help for sore throats, especially when croaky or lost your voice.

Last week, I had a terrible return of second deep tinnitus which gave me a horrible headache, and could not work out why. Over the last weekend I was reminded of it, and it occurred to me it was after having a packet of cheese & onion crisps (chips). On the ingredients on the packet it says contains cheese and onion seasoning, so there must be some form of cheese contained within, so now these crisps are no in my diet. I have not tried other flavours yet.

Fellow sufferers please take heed.

I can confirm that tea is no good for tinnitus, I had a cup of tea on Wednesday and yesterday (Thursday) I had one almighty stinking headache on top of my condition, so tea is now a definite no-no for me.

I am sorry to hear that. It could be that you have some kind of allergy to it. Of course I wouldn't know if tea is causing my tinnitus or not because I haven't gone a day without tea in well over a couple of decades. However, on air travel days, I do refrain until we land.

I learned the hard way. I had a HUGE cup of tea right before getting on a flight and we hit some major turbulence and my bladder was SUPER full and I couldn't get up to empty it. I felt EVERY bump that plane hit. Luckily, the flight smoothed out. I decided to take a run for it. The flight attendant said that she couldn't stop me but to hurry. I did. By the time I got back in my seat, the captain came on and said if we needed to use the rest room to hurry because he didn't know when the turbulence will start back up again. I beat him to it.
